Description
The invention relates to the use of refractory metals or their alloys, the additional elements for the stabilization of the oxygen contained as a wall material for with lithium as a liquid metallic filler operated heat pipes.
Heat pipes are hermetically sealed on all sides with a built-in web or groove formed on the inner wall capillary system, the tubes partially with a filler are filled. When one end of such a tube is heated, the filler begins to evaporate in the heating zone, the steam flows to the distant cooling zone and condenses there, the condensate flows in the capillary system of the heat pipe back to the heating zone. The filler transports heat with so little Temperature drop so that the temperature of the whole heat pipe can be regarded as practically constant can.
Such heat pipes are often used for dissipating and transporting heat to the emitter and for dissipating heat from the collector of thermionic energy converters. Working temperatures for the interaction of such tubes connected to the emitters of thermionic converters of ungefiihr 1400-1600 0 C required, the set of selection of the filler and the wall material of the heat pipe narrow limits. It is known to use refractory metals such as niobium, zirconium, molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum or their alloys, for example niobium with 1% zirconium, tantalum with 5% tungsten, as wall materials. Bismuth, lead, thallium, barium and the alkali metals are known as liquid, metallic working media. The known wall materials, such as molybdenum or tungsten, have proven to be unsuitable in many cases because they are too brittle. Known pipe walls made of niobium alloys with 1% zirconium or also made of tantalum, in lithium-operated heat pipes only have an unsatisfactory service life of a few days until they burn through. The oxygen content of the Waad material in high-temperature heat pipes has a decisive influence on the corrosion process. This is based on the dissolution of oxygen from the wall material by liquid lithium, which runs along the inner wall under the operating conditions. The liquid lithium transports the oxygen into the heating zone, where it is deposited in the form of oxides of lithium and the metal of the wall material. Corrosion can only be controlled if the pipe wall material has an oxygen content of less than 1 ppm. However, up to now such requirements could hardly be met on an industrial scale.
Finally, a commercially available tantalum is known that has low levels of yttrium (so-called SGS tantalum, d. H. a grain-stabilized tantalum).
The invention is based on the object of providing a wall material for use in lithium-powered Specify heat pipes that have excellent corrosion resistance.
To achieve this object, the invention provides for the use of oxygen-stabilized refractory metals; Accordingly, the invention consists in the use of refractory metals or their alloys with contents of 5 to 500 ppm of oxygen-stabilizing elements as wall material for heat pipes operated with lithium as a filler.
For the use according to the invention as a wall material in lithium-operated heat pipes, tantalum, for example, to which yttrium or rare earth metals such as cerium or lanthanum has been added, has proven itself. The tantalum has contents of these additional elements between 5 and 500 ppm.
But also alloys of tantalum, such as Taiital with 5% Tungsten containing additions of oxygen stabilizing elements in amounts of 5 to 500 ppm, for example Yttrium or rare earth metals are suitable for the use according to the invention.
Furthermore, niobium or its alloys, such as niobium with 1% zirconium, with additions of 5 to 500 ppm of oxygen-stabilizing elements, can be used as wall material according to the invention. The use of refractory metals with the addition of oxygen-stabilizing elements as wall material in lithium-powered heat conduction tubes has considerable advantages. These additives, such as yttrium or the rare earth metals, reduce the rate of diffusion of oxygen in the wall material to such an extent that the lithium, which is extremely low in oxygen due to the constant evaporation-condensation cycle and therefore has a high free enthalpy of binding to oxygen, no longer receives any oxygen supply. With a heat pipe made of tantalum with 5 to 100 ppm yttrium, successful operational tests were carried out at 1600 ° C. for 1000 hours without the capillary structure being impaired. Heat flux densities in the axial direction of over 10 kW / cm 2 were found.
