Ch., 1861, p. 204 ff.) Found that when zinc amalgam acts on saltpetre solutions, nitrite is formed, and that this reaction proceeds more rapidly in warmth than in cold. His statements are, however, of a purely qualitative nature and do not reveal the way in which sodium amalgam affects the nitrate solutions. He briefly mentions the reaction of pure sodium, but does not specify its behavior towards warm or hot nitrate solutions. Later Divers (Chem. News. XXIII [1871], p. 206, and Ch. C. 1871, p. 460) showed, that when Na and sodium amalgam act on cold nitric solutions, "" sodium nitrite is formed that but the reaction does not stop at this stage, but leads to the formation of copious amounts of nitric oxide (N 2 O) and hyponitrite.
This result is in agreement with the result of Zorn's experiments (Ber. XII [1879], p. 1509), who gained considerable amounts of hyponitrite by electrolytically reducing a cold saltpetre solution on a mercury cathode. The theoretical explanation for this phenomenon has recently been found by E. Müller (Z. f. Anorg. Chemie XXVI [1901], pp. 1 to 90) by establishing that the depolarization potential of sodium nitrate (Na NO 3 ) on mercury is lower lies than that of sodium nitrite (Na NO 2 ), so that nitrite is the better depolarizer.
Even on copper cathodes, nitrite seems to be the better depolarizer in cold solutions to be at least found Gladstone and Tribe (Ber. XI [1878], p. 717) when they a nitrate solution at ordinary temperature and using an asbestos diaphragm, as well as a soluble anode (zinc) electrolyzed, among the reduction products, noticeable amounts of ammonia.
The patent literature has only two publications on the electrolytic representation of nitrite, on the one hand the French patent specification 264711 (Moniteur scientifique, Choix des Brevets, 1898, p. 31) by Belleville & Taquet, on the other hand the American patent specification 670201. The method by Belleville & Taquet works without Diaphragm and with anodes that are easily attacked by nitric acid. In the process of the American patent specification, which likewise does not use a diaphragm and uses an anode (zinc) soluble in nitric acid, the aim is undoubtedly to obtain zinc oxide; in any case, the process specified therein is completely unsuitable for the production of nitrite, because zinc is used as prescribed As an anode, some sodium zincate is always formed in the electrolyte when the zinc nitrate (Zn [NO 3 ] J is converted with sodium hydroxide (NaOH)) , and some zinc is then immediately precipitated on the cathode may, it is transformed in a very short time into a zinc cathode which is completely unsuitable for nitrite extraction in the long term.
The use of warm solutions provided in this procedure appears utterly impossible, because zinc is in solution in the electrolyte, which is never completely neutral would go and produce ammonia.
According to the literature cited, attempts at the electrolytic representation of nitrite would have can appear quite hopeless; However, it became the following on the part of the inventor established. It was assumed that the position of the depolarization potentials found by Müller of the nitrate and nitrite measured by this author in cold solutions,
ίο eine Verschiebung erleiden könne, wenn mit siedend heißer Lauge gearbeitet wird; andererseits wurde vermutet, daß die von-Divers (1. c.) beobachtete Überreduktion bei Anwendung von Na- Amalgam ihren Grund in zu großer Konzentration des Amalgams gehabt habe.ίο could suffer a shift when working with boiling hot caustic solution; On the other hand, it was assumed that the overreduction observed by von-Divers (1. c.) when using Na- amalgam was due to an excessive concentration of the amalgam.
The surprising fact arose that the nascent electrolytic hydrogen reduced the sodium nitrate on some cathode materials to nitrite with a very good yield when boiling solutions were used. In particular, one finds excellent yields from mercury, although according to the work of Zorn, Divers, Schönbein, E. Müller and others, an increased hyponitrite formation and thus large nitrogen losses should have been expected. If one goes to the bottom of this phenomenon, one finds that amalgams of such a dilution as the electrolysis delivers even when using high current densities (1000 amperes per m 2 and above) act on boiling nitrate solution predominantly with the formation of nitrite; however, in the case of mercury and amalgamated cathodes, other factors are also of decisive influence, e.g. B. the level of current density, the concentration of the electrolyte, its alkalinity and movement.
Die Ausführung des vorliegenden Verfahrens möge an folgenden Beispielen erläutert werden:The execution of the present process is illustrated by the following examples will:
Beispiel I.·Example I.
A layer of mercury about 2 cm high is poured onto the bottom of a cylindrical electrolytic apparatus, in the lid of which a cement cell serving as a diaphragm is hung, into which a heating coil made of invulnerable material (e.g. iron), which also serves as a displacement body, and the one in a Platinum piece ending power supply device is laid. Snake and power supply cable are inserted from the side through pipe sockets or, if inserted vertically, they are insulated within the electrolyte. The cathode compartment of the cell thus created is filled to one or, provided two locations with a moderate speed stirrer and about 3/4 with a minimum of 6-normal boiling hot nitric acid solution. In the anode compartment you add several normal sodium hydroxide solution or, if the aim is to obtain caustic soda and chlorine in addition to nitrite, a cold saturated saline solution that has been made somewhat alkaline. Platinum, carbon or optionally iron is used as an unassailable anode, which is expediently arranged horizontally. Now is electrolyzed at a current density of IOOO amps and above per square meter and obtains the electrolyte continuously to 110 to 120 0 C. (depending on the concentration), that is close to its boiling point. The required voltage is around 3 to 4 volts and the initially 100 percent current yield drops only very slowly. When the electrolyte has reached a sufficient concentration of sodium nitrite (NaNO 2 ) , the electrolysis is interrupted and the nitrite is isolated using known methods.
Beispiel II.Example II.
An approximately 6 normal sodium nitrate solution is kept boiling in a vessel, the bottom of which is 2 cm high covered with mercury. Liquid, e.g. B. 3 to 4 ° / es oo'g electrolytically derived sodium amalgam in the manner enter in that the amalgam is not likely to come with the nitrate solution into contact than in the ground-covering mercury until it dissolved. An amount of mercury corresponding to the supply of amalgam and the speed of the reaction runs off through a nozzle located at the bottom of the vessel in order to be enriched again with sodium in the electrolytic apparatus. When the solution contains enough nitrite to separate this salt, it is drained and replaced with a new solution.
