Description
The invention relates to polyphenylene oxide masses, their impact strength and resistance to cracking in aggressive solvents pure polyphenylene oxide are improved without substantial impairment of the other physical Properties.
Recently, the high molecular weight polyphenylene oxides appeared as new plastics in technology. These polyphenylene oxides have excellent mechanical and electrical properties over a wide temperature range, which makes them suitable for a wide variety of applications. So far, however, two properties of the polyphenylene oxides have their suitability for certain purposes somewhat impaired. These properties are poor impact strength and only moderate durability against cracking in aggressive solvents. These disadvantages are alleviated by the invention Fixed.

The term "polyphenylene oxide" used here includes both substituted and unsubstituted polyphenylene oxides.
Polyolefins can also be used as polyolefins that can be dispersed in the polyphenylene oxides up to 15 carbon atoms per recurring unit in question. Suitable polyolefins are therefore polyethylene, Polypropylene, polyisopropylene, polyisobutylene, etc.
The method used is immaterial. The only requirement for dispersion is that the polyolefin is as uniform as possible
It it is assumed that if the distribution is incomplete or unevenly distributed, there is a tendency to form consists of aggregates that impair the physical properties of the polymer mixture.
The dispersion can be carried out by any known method. For example The two polymers can be in the form of granules or powder in a Banbury mixer and / or mixed on roller mixers or continuously by extrusion of mixtures of the polymers will. Another suitable method of forming the dispersion is to have the two Solvents polymers in a solvent in which they are jointly soluble and the polymers a'y homogeneous Mixture fails at the same time.
Extrusion turned out to be the best method for mixing the components according to the invention, because the greatest uniformity is achieved here. The mixed precipitation of the two polymers however, from a common solvent is also a good method.
When the mixture was formed by extrusion, the two polymers were in the form of granules or powder generally mixed first by rolling. The finer the powder, the more uniform is the intermingling. The mixture was then fed into the hopper of an extruder and extruded at a temperature in the range of 230 to 345 C. To complete dispersion To ensure the polyolefin in polyphenylene oxide, it may be useful to remove the strand granulate in a chopping machine and then again through the extruder under the same conditions admit.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a plasticizer is in the mixture of Polyolefin and polyphenylene oxide incorporated. Made by using a plasticizer dissolution or swelling of the two polymer components. This will make the mixing through Reduction of the friction between the polymer particles improved. Here is a preferred one Unification of areas of the same polymer prevented. In general, any plasticizer can be used which is compatible with both the holyolefins and the polyphenylene oxide. Typical examples of suitable plasticizers are the chlorinated biphenols and mineral oil.
The amount of plasticizer used must be chosen so that the properties of the polymer, ζ. B. the rigidity, the dimensional stability in the Heat, etc., not to be deteriorated too much.
The polyolefin can be added to the polyphenylene oxide in amounts that match the polyphenylene oxide are compatible and in which there is no segregation of separate areas. In general Up to about 10 percent by weight of polyolefin can be added to the polyphenylene oxide before incompatibility is detected.
Above 10%, pressed parts have a tendency to split up and the mixture begins to get weak. Particularly good results have been obtained with 3 to 5 percent by weight of polyolefin. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, 3 to 5% polyolefin is polyphenylene oxide mixed in.
Die Schlagzähigkeit kann bei Zugabe von 5%The impact strength can be increased with the addition of 5%
Polyethylene to poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide by up to 260% and with the addition of 5% polyethylene and 1% mineral oil as plasticizers nm more than 325 "» can be increased. For example, the impact strength of a poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene-oxide 0.11 mkg / 2.54 cm notch and with 5% polyethylene 0.29 mkg / 2.54 cm notch. After addition From 1% mineral oil to the mixture, the notched impact strength was 0.36 mkg / 2.54 cm notch. Furthermore, the same sample with 5% added polyethylene did not show any RiUbildung in hexane under a tension of 3% in 500 minutes, while the pure Polyphenylenoxvd cracked in 2 to 3 minutes.
These improved properties are unexpected because the polyolefins generally have inferior physical properties than the polyphenylene oxides. They have good resistance to solvents and, in small amounts, increase the resistance of the phenylene oxides to solvents quite considerably.
The polyolefin acts as a lubricant or plasticizer for the polyphenylene oxide and facilitates the processing of high-melting polyphenylene oxides. For example, polyethylene acts as a lubricant in the extrusion of polyphenylene oxide and prevents the build-up of oxidized polymer, which normally has to be fixed on the extrusion head. When using these mixtures for injection molding the frequent application of a mold release is mung means unlike ι u rein> .n polyphenylene superfluous.
The following examples illustrate the process of and through the invention Process achievable improved properties of polyphenylene oxides.
This example illustrates the effect of adding polyethylene to poly (2,6-dimethyll.4-phenylene) oxide. Samples were made by each 0%. 0.5%. 1%. 3%. 5% and 10% by weight of polyethylene were dispersed in poly (2.6-dimethyl-1.4-phenylene) oxide. Granulated polyphenylene oxide was used to prepare the samples. which had an intrinsic viscosity of 0.54 dl g, measured in chloroform at 30 ° C., mixed with granulated polyethylene by rolling the ingredients on rollers for 30 minutes before extrusion. The mixtures were then fed through a funnel into the barrel of a 19 mm single screw press. The extrusion was carried out at a temperature between 293 and 304 ° C. The samples were then granulated and then passed through the extruder again under the same conditions in order to improve the degree of dispersion SS of the polyethylene in polyphenylene oxide. After this second pass through the extruder, the strands were injection molded at a temperature of 310 to 32FC into a series of test bars 63.5 12.7 χ 3.2 mm. For these test specimens, the notched impact strength and the time to crack formation were measured in hexane. The notched impact strength was determined according to ASTM-D-256. This test is a measure of the force required to break a notched test rod with a sharp blow. This test is therefore an indication of the impact resistance of a material. A brittle or notch sensitive material has a low notched impact strength.
The resistance to aggressive solvents was measured by bending the test rods ν, until a 3% elongation occurred at the top of the tensioned test rod. These tensioned test rods were set at four points on a jig and immersed in hexane. the The time to the occurrence of crack formation on the tensioned surface of these test bars was measured. The results of the two tests above are given in Table I below.

Ferner war beimIt has been found that Schmie r was achieved with UNG Polyäthylenzusätzen of more than 1% enough to prevent the accumulation of blackened, oxidized material at the extrusion head of the extruder to prevent during fabrication. Injection molding of pure polyphenylene oxide is the most common Application of a mold release agent required. This was not the case with any of the samples with the addition of polyethylene necessary.
This example illustrates the influence of the addition of plasticizer to the blend of polyolefin and polyphenylene oxide. The samples were with the same polyethylene and poly (2.6-dimethyl-1.4-phenylene) oxide and in the same way as prepared in Example 1 with the only exception that 1% mineral oil was added as a plasticizer to the polymer mixture during mixing. The results are shown in Table 11 below.

It can be seen from the above values that the mineral oil added as a plasticizer improves the impact strength improved by adding polyethylene to poly (2.6-dimethyl-1.4-phenylene) oxide was achieved. This result is a more uniform dispersion of the polyethylene in the polyphenylene oxide attributable to.

This example illustrates that various other physical properties of polyphenylene oxide are not significantly affected by the addition of polyethylene. In the present case were. Test bars produced in the manner described in Example I were used to determine the tensile strength, the elongation at break and to measure the dimensional stability under heat. All tests were carried out according to ASTM methods accomplished. The tensile strength was measured according to ASTM-E-648. It is a measure of the force t3t required to tear apart a standard test rod by pulling it. The following Results were obtained.
Die Formbeständigkeit in der Wärme fiel mit zunehmenden Äthylenmengen leicht ab.From the table above it can be seen that the tensile strength of the polymer mixture at the yield point and in the event of breakage not significantly affected by the addition of polyethylene up to 7.5% would. When 3% polyethylene was added, the tensile strength of the polymer mixture at break was even better than with polyphenylene oxide. At concentrations greater than 7.5%, the tensile strength dropped significantly. This is in turn due to the poor distribution of polyethylene in the polyphenylene oxides. The elongation at break was improved by adding 3 and 5% polyethylene. The dimensional stability in the warmth it fell slightly with increasing amounts of ethylene.
Mixtures of 3 percent by weight of polypropylene with poly (2.6 - dimethyl -1.4 - phenylene) oxide of an intrinsic viscosity of 0.54 dl / g, measured in chloroform at 30 ° C., were processed in the manner described in Example 1 to give test bars of the same size . A product with a density of 0.91 was used as the polypropylene. Again, to illustrate that it is desirable to evenly distribute the polyolefin in polyphenylene oxide, two different sets of samples were prepared. The first group of test bars was formed by mixing 3 percent by weight of polypropylene granules with polyphenylene oxide, extruding the mixture at a temperature between 293 and 304 ° C., granulating the strand and extruding the granules again under the same conditions. The extruder described in Example 1 was used. The strand was processed into test specimens by injection molding at temperatures between 321 and 338 ° C.
Die das Sieb passierende Fraktion wurdeThe second group of test bars was made with 3 percent by weight polypropylene benzine from the same ingredients and in the same manner, except that powdered polypropylene was used in place of the granules. The powdered polypropylene was prepared as follows: Polypropylene granules were dissolved in hot xylene, processed in a Waring mixer and precipitated with methanol. The precipitated powder was then finally sifted in a convection oven at 100 0 C dried and with a sieve having a mesh width of 0.84 mm. The fraction passing through the sieve was

An ethylene-propylene copolymer was swollen in hot toluene and mixed with methanol in a Waring mixer, whereby a polymer powder was precipitated. The solution thus formed was mixed with methanol, whereby a mixed polymer powder of polypropylene and polyethylene was precipitated. The precipitated powder was dried and fi with a sieve having a mesh width of 0.84 mm sieved in the manner described in Example 5.. The poly (2.6-dimethyl-1.4-phenylene) oxide from Example 5 was then added to the powdered ethylene-Prüpyien-Copolyrneren in such an amount that a mixture was obtained which contained 3 percent by weight of polyolefin in the polyphenylene oxide. This polymer mixture was rolled and extruded in the manner described in Example 1 for 30 minutes. The extrusion temperature was kept between 288 and 300 ° C. The strands were then chopped and re-extruded under the same conditions. The strands obtained were processed by injection molding at a temperature between 304 and 316 C to give test bars with a size of 63.5 12.7 χ 3.2 mm. The samples obtained had a homogeneous appearance. There were no signs of a split. The test bars had a notched impact strength of 0.24 mkg / 2.54 cm notch compared to 0.14 mkg / 2.54 cm notch for a test chamber made of pure polyphenylene oxide.
