Description
The preparation of 4-bromo-3-hydroxy-quinophthalone by reacting 3-hydroxy-quinophthalone with bromine in boiling glacial acetic acid is known from German patent 619 521. This connection gives on fibers and foils made of polyethylene terephthalate yellow dyeings or prints that compared to the dyeings and prints produced with 3-hydroxy-quinophthalone by a characterized by increased heat-setting fastness. The one prepared by the above-mentioned known method However, brominated 3-hydroxyquinophthalone has the disadvantage that the hue of the dyeings on fibers and foils made of polyethylene terephthalate depends considerably on the hydrogen ion concentration of the Dyebath depends. At a pH value of 7 and more, i.e. in the neutral and alkaline range, the said fibers or films colored greenish yellow, while at a pH value of less than 7, i.e. in the acidic pH range, reddish yellow to orange colorations can be obtained. This fact works for example, very unfavorable on the dyeings and prints, which in the presence of carriers with phenolic hydroxyl groups, for example o-phenylphenol, are produced because of the weak acidity the phenolic groups are already sufficient, the coloring or printing the undesired ones To give red tint. This disadvantageous property of the manufactured according to the known method Dye is presumably due to the fact that during the bromination of the 3-hydroxy quinophthalons partially an addition of hydrogen bromide to the dye molecule in the known way he follows.
Also by repeatedly dissolving the dye prepared in the known way in dilute! liquid alkali metal hydroxide solution and reprecipitation this deficiency cannot be completely remedied with acid.
From the German patent specification 1 229 663 fen.er known that 4-bromo-3-hydroxy-quinophthalone by condensation of phthalic anhydride and 3-hydroxy-quinaldine-4-carboxylic acid and subsequent bromination of the condensation melt can be obtained. This product is not enough either pure and gives, for example, after fine division a dye that causes deposits the colored material tends to.
It has now been found that pure 4-bromo-3-hydroxyquinophthalone can be obtained the form!

In the process of the present invention the 4-bromo-3-hydroxy-quinophthalone in pure form so that it is no longer necessary to carry it through Falling over or turning over to clean.
In addition, the dye falls on the decomposition of the reaction mixture by pouring into ice or Water in small, even crystals. This makes the subsequent fine distribution considerable facilitated. This is expediently carried out by grinding or kneading, with the one produced according to the invention Dye considerably compared to the products available in solvents or in water shorter grinding or kneading times are sufficient for fine division.
In finely divided form, the dye dyes fibers or films as aromatic polyesters, in particular Polyethylene terephthalates, from acidic, neutral or alkaline dispersion, pure yellow with good fastness properties.
Das Reaktionsgemisch wird 5 bis 20 Stunden gerührt.100 parts by weight of 3-hydroxyquinophthalone are dissolved in 1000 parts by weight of 96% strength sulfuric acid and a mixture of 56 parts by weight of bromine and 0.2 parts by weight of iodine is introduced into the solution within V 2 to 1 hour. The reaction mixture is stirred for 5 to 20 hours.
