Description
Die Erfindung betrifft weichgestellte Polyvinylalkoholmassen. The invention relates to plasticized polyvinyl alcohol compositions.
Polyvinyl alcohols have a unique position among synthetic high polymers in that they have the Have the following properties: water solubility, high tensile strength, impermeability to Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and other gases as well as good separation properties against most other synthetic polymers. These properties are technically important when used of polyvinyl alcohol films in a variety of vacuum pressing and forming operations in which Various molding resins and adhesives are cured at elevated temperatures while they are be held in place by means of a polyvinyl alcohol film under a high vacuum. A disadvantage of the polyvinyl alcohols for such uses is its inherent brittleness. Among some Polyvinyl alcohol films used for such applications will tear due to conditions their brittleness and in this way cause the vacuum to be lost.
According to the invention, the use of 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol intended as a plasticizer for polyvinyl alcohol.
The polyvinyl alcohol component of the composition can be any of the commercially available types of polyvinyl alcohol but is preferably a fully hydrolyzed variety; H. one that at least 97% is hydrolyzed and has a viscosity of 5 to 10 especially 20 to 40 cenipoise; if it is measured as a 4% strength aqueous solution at 20 ° C. by means of the Hoeppler ball fall method.
Preferred compositions of the invention contain from 5 to 20% 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol, based on the weight of the polyvinyl alcohol. Smaller amounts are useful, but in some cases have proven to be useful shown insufficiently to give appreciable plasticization. Larger amounts can be used even if they do not lead to any additional benefit. Most preferred amounts of the Diethylpropanediols are between 15 and 25% of the weight of the polyvinyl alcohol.
The compositions of the invention may include ingredients other than polyvinyl alcohol and 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol. Thus, it can include: insolubilizing agents such as titanium lactate, melamine formaldehyde, and dimethylol urea; Extenders such as starch, dextrin and karein; Colors, for example Congo red; Gelling agents such as resorcinol and gallic acid; Pigments, for example TiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 'and lithopones; and other plasticizers, such as those listed in Table 1 below. Whether one or more such optional additives are used depends essentially on the desired properties of the polyvinyl alcohol composition and / or the end product made from it. Accordingly, in some cases the presence of an auxiliary plasticizer, such as glycerol, together with the 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol can be advantageous.
In the preparation of the compositions according to the invention, the diethylpropanediol is mixed with the polyvinyl alcohol in any suitable manner. In one method, the diethylpropanediol is in the desired Amount mixed with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and made from the obtained Mixture then evaporates the water, e.g. B. after being cast into a foil. If desired, you can incorporate the diethylpropanediol into the polyvinyl alcohol by putting the two together married.
In den nachstehenden Beispielen wird der Weichmacher unter gutem Vermischen einer wäßrigen Lösung des Polyvinylalkohols zugesetzt und die erhaltene Lösung mittels einer Rakel auf einer Glasplatte ausgebreitet, über Nacht an der Luft getrocknet undIn the examples below, the plasticizer is an aqueous one with thorough mixing Solution of the polyvinyl alcohol added and the solution obtained using a doctor blade on a glass plate spread out, air-dried overnight and
About their thermal behavior To determine, the films about 0.05 mm thick are cut into pieces about 10 cm square. These are placed in a forced air oven and held at about 140 ° C for an hour or more.
Then they are removed from the oven and quickly cooled (about 30 seconds) to room temperature, then grasped between thumb and forefinger at two opposite corners and rubbed vigorously forward and backward. Brittle foils will crack or splinter almost immediately. Those out Compositions produced according to the invention survive innumerable bending and prove their superiority Suppleness.
The 2,2-diethyi-1,3-propanediol is a little less with polyvinyl alcohol at normal temperatures compatible than some other plasticizers as shown in the examples below. Furthermore, considering the pliability of the various plasticized sheets shown prior to heat treatment compares a number of the tested materials with more flexible films than the 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol. However, if you check the pliability of the films after the heat treatment at 140 ° C, keep it the films produced according to the invention their suppleness, whereas all other foils are brittle.
The reason for this surprising superiority of those softened with 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol Slides is not completely clear. But if you have foils, which known amounts of polyvinyl alcohol and the Containing various plasticizers, heat treatment at 140 ° C and weight loss determined as a function of time, it is found that films which 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol initially lose weight faster than films containing the same amount of glycerine. After this initial period, however, the glycerine-containing films lose much faster Weight than those containing 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol. These results show that a lower Diffusion rate through the polyvinyl alcohol for the better plasticizing effect of the 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol in the film subjected to the heat treatment may be responsible.
The compositions of the invention are useful as deformable compositions. That means they can be used to make shaped articles such as cast, pressed or extruded films or other items of trade. These masses are also useful for other purposes for which polyvinyl alcohols are used. The preferred Masses are particularly valuable in the form of foils, which are various molding resins and adhesives hold in place during their curing during vacuum pressing and deformation operations.
The following examples explain the invention further; all percentages and parts refer to the masses focus on the weight.
Probestücke der Folien von etwa 10 cm im Quadrat bringt manThe polyvinyl alcohol used is a commercially available, fully hydrolyzed variety in which 99 to 100% of the acetate groups of the starting polyvinyl acetate have been hydrolyzed. It shows in the measurement than 4 ° / 0 aqueous solution at 20 0 C after the Hoeppler falling ball method, a viscosity of about 30 centipoise. A 10 ° / 0 sodium solution is prepared therefrom by adding to a part of the polyvinyl alcohols to 9 parts of water and the resulting slurry with good agitation at 9O 0 C heated, is obtained until a clear uniform solution. Die Ergebnisse zeigt die Tabelle 3.Cut foils identical to those of A and B from Table 2 into pieces of 7.62 x 1.5 cm. A series of each is kept for 9 days in a room set at 22.2 ° C and 50% relative Moisture is maintained, conditioned. A second series of each is in at 145 ° C for one hour maintained in an air circulating oven and then conditioned for 6 days at 22.2 ° C and 50% relative humidity. Then the percentage elongation at break is determined for the sample films in a tensile tester of the Instron type with an initial claw opening of 1 inch and an expansion rate of 100% / min. applies. The results are shown in Table 3.

5.00 g of the completely hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol from Example 1, which was dried in the oven at 140 ° C. for 10 minutes, and each of two other corresponding flasks (C and D ) are added 5.00 g of a commercially available. Then 1.00 g of glycerin is added to each of the flasks A and C and 1.00 g of 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol is added to each of the flasks B and D. After adding 50 ml of water to each flask, heat the flasks and their contents in a hot water bath while stirring the contents with glass rods. The solutions obtained are poured onto flat glass plates measuring 16.5 x 40.6 cm and spread to cover most of the surface of the plate. The flasks and stir bars are washed with several portions of hot water and the wash water is transferred to the appropriate plates. The solutions are air-dried overnight and the films obtained are then completely stripped from the plates and weighed. The foils are placed in an air circulation oven maintained at 140 to 145 ° C., heated therein for the specified periods of time and reweighed after each period. The results are shown in Table 4.

From the above results it can be seen that those with 2,2-diethyl-l, 3-propanedioI (samples B and D) Softened films initially lose weight more quickly than films softened with glycerine. After the first 10 minutes of heating, however, the films softened with glycerine lose with them significantly higher speed of weight, so that after 210 minutes of heating these samples (A and C) contain only 0.6 to 2.2% plasticizer, based on the weight of the polyvinyl alcohol, in comparison with 7.4 to 8.6% in those with 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol plasticized films (samples B and D), assuming that the entire Weight losses represent losses in the plasticizer. In addition, the latter slides are still after the last heating pliable, whereas those softened with glycerine are brittle.
