welches in reinem Zustand einen Schmelzpunkt von 1880C unter Zersetzung hat.which in the pure state has a melting point of 188 ° C. with decomposition.
The new compound, the exact constitution of which, especially with regard to the points of attachment between the methyl-tert-butylhydroxyphenyl radicals and the butane radical, is not yet known, can be prepared by mixing 1 mol of crotonaldehyde with 3 mol of 3-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol in The presence of a suitable condensing agent such as zinc chloride, strong sulfuric acid or fluorosulfonic acid, preferably strong hydrochloric acid, is reacted. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent. It is believed that the solvent prevents the formation of resinous products. The solvent must be inert to the reactants and can for example consist of methanol or glacial acetic acid. The reaction is preferably carried out at a somewhat elevated temperature, for example at the reflux temperature of the solvent. The compound obtained in this way melts, recrystallized from toluene, at 180 to 182 ° C .; After repeated recrystallisation from petroleum ether and several hours of drying at 100 0 C under high vacuum, the compound melts at 188 ° C (with decomposition).
The compound of the invention is a valuable antioxidant for polymeric substances, e.g. B. synthetic and natural rubbers, polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene, and for polyethylene terephthalate. It is particularly suitable for substances whose discoloration is undesirable and will incorporated in amounts which usually do not exceed 1 percent by weight.
From U.S. Patents 2919 294 and 2912463 condensation products of unsaturated aldehydes and phenols are already known. It did, however found that the compound of the invention is similar to the known compounds in several respects is superior, as can be seen from the results of the comparative tests.
The production of the new connection forms the subject of German patent 1,285,480 and is is described in the relevant publication.
This is achieved by reacting the compound according to the invention with acetic anhydride and sodium acetate obtained triacetyl derivative recrystallized from ethanol has a melting point of 164 ° C.
The effect of the compound of the present invention as an antioxidant will be illustrated by the following Experiments explained in more detail.

Die Versuche wurden wie folgt durchgeführt: The compound of the invention has been used as an antioxidant for polyethylene terephthalate films and investigated a nitrile rubber with a medium nitrogen content, which had a Mooney viscosity index of 89, an acrylonitrile content of about 32% and produced by a polymerization carried out at a low temperature of about 5 ° C had been. The experiments were carried out as follows:
a) Nitrilkautschuka) nitrile rubber
For the oxygen uptake test, thin raw crepe samples were placed in a glass flask, which contained synthetic zeolites as a molecular sieve to absorb gaseous decomposition products, which would otherwise affect the pressure regulations. The glass bulb from 30 to 35 ecm Contents contained about 5 g of the molecular sieve and about 0.03 g of the sample, and it was through a mercury containing U-tube connected to another glass bulb. Both flasks filled with air were then sealed and placed in a steam thermostat kept at 78 ° C. A shift the mercury column in the U-tube reveals an oxidation of the polyethylene. The time until a significant shift in the mercury column occurred was measured. This time is the induction period for oxygen uptake.

Die Ergebnisse dieser Versuche sind in der folgenden Tabelle wiedergegeben:Similar oxygen uptake studies were carried out at 200 ° C. with a film made from this polymer 0.025 mm thick, the sample in question being coated with a coating made from a 5% solution of the antioxidant in a 50:50 mixture of toluene and acetone. The time given in the table is the number of hours which were required to absorb 20 or 40 ecm of oxygen per gram of the sample in each case.
The results of these tests are given in the following table:

VergleichsversucheComparative experiments
Die folgenden Vergleichsversuche zeigen die Überlegenheit der erfindungsgemäßen Verbindung gegenüber den wirksamsten aus den USA.-Patentschriften 2 919 294 und 2 912463 bekannten Verbindungen, nämlichThe following comparative tests show the superiority of the compound according to the invention the most potent compounds known from U.S. Patents 2,919,294 and 2,912463, namely
1. 4,4'-(2-Äthyl-2-hexen-l-yliden)-bis-(6-tert.-butylm-cresol), 1. 4,4 '- (2-Ethyl-2-hexen-1-ylidene) -bis- (6-tert-butylm-cresol),
2. 4,4'-(2-Äthyl-2-buten-l-yliden)-bis-(6-tert.-butylm-cresol). 2. 4,4 '- (2-Ethyl-2-buten-1-ylidene) -bis- (6-tert-butylm-cresol).
bei der Anwendung auf Polypropylen.when applied to polypropylene.
Die genannten Vergleichsverbindungen wurden entsprechend der in der USA.-Patentschrift 2 919 294 gegebenen Anleitung folgendermaßen hergestellt:The comparison compounds mentioned were prepared in accordance with US Pat. No. 2,919,294 given instructions prepared as follows:
1. V2M0I 3-Methyl-6-tert.-butylphenol (6-tert.-Butyl-m-cresol) und V4 Mol a-Äthyl-ß-propylacrolein (2-Äthyl-2-hexanal) wurden zusammen mit 4,7 g Salz-1. V2M0I 3-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol (6-tert-butyl-m-cresol) and V 4 mol of a-ethyl-ß-propylacrolein (2-ethyl-2-hexanal) were mixed with 4, 7 g salt
The reaction mixture, a dark brown viscous syrup, was cooled. About 100 ml of a solvent consisting of a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons having about 7 carbon atoms was then added. The product was stirred for 4 hours a little above room temperature, and the precipitated white solid was filtered off, washed with the same aliphatic hydrocarbon, dried and recrystallized from benzene. The yield was approximately 10 g. The product had a melting point of 205 to 207 ° C. A mixture of this product with a sample of 1,1-bis (3-methyl-6-tert-butyl-1-hydroxyphenyl) butane did not result in a decrease in the melting point. The infrared spectrum of these two compounds was identical. It follows that the product is 1,1-bis- (3-methyl-6-tert-butyl -1-hydroxyphenyl) -butane and not, as assumed in US Pat. No. 2,919,294, 4,4 '- (2-Ethyl-2-hexen-1-ylidene) -bis-6-tert.-butyl-m-cresol was involved. The 1,1-bis (3-methyl-6-tert-butyl-1-hydroxyphenyl) butane was prepared by condensing 3-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol with n-butyraldehyde.
A similar experiment was carried out using a-methyl-ß-äthylacrolein (2-methyl-2-pentenal) and 3-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol. The product was found to be 1,1-bis (3-methyl-6-tert-butyl-1-hydroxyphenyl) propane identified. 1,1-bis- (3-methyl-6-tert-butyl-1-hydroxyphenyl) propane was made by condensing 3-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol with propionaldehyde.
3. Diesen Vergleichsverbindungen wurde die erfindungsgemäße Verbindung gegenübergestellt.3. These comparison compounds were compared with the compound according to the invention.
The three antioxidants were incorporated into polypropylene in an amount of 0.5 percent by weight. Plates 0.5 mm thick were then made from these mixtures. The plates were aged at a temperature of 150 ° C. in an oven while air was passed over them at a rate of 1 cm 3 per minute.

The more effective of the known compounds, namely compound 1, was tested in a melt stability test compared with the compound 3 according to the invention. The melt stability is from of great importance, since thermoplastic molding compounds are heated to higher temperatures during deformation must be, whereby a cleavage of the polymer chains occurs, which leads to a decrease in viscosity Consequence.
The tests were carried out with polypropylene mixtures containing 0.1 and 0.5 percent by weight of compound 1 and compound 3 as antioxidants. The melt flow indices were measured before and after the injection molding of 3.2 mm thick polypropylene plates with these samples according to ASTM D 1238-57 T, with a 10 kg weight at 19O 0 C for a residence time in the cylinder of 20 minutes and a temperature of 295 ° C was applied.
