Grooved pistons In cylinders with pressurized
Liquids, for example in working cylinders or hydraulic valve cylinders
Devices results in the difficulty that the axially movable in the cylinder
Piston during a standstill by the on its cylindrical surface
acting in the radial direction large liquid pressure with such a great force against
the cylinder wall is pressed so that a very large axial force is required,
to get it moving again. To reduce this so-called locking effect,
a number of grooves have been provided on the circumference of the piston. Through this
Grooves should be made of the liquid from the side of the piston skirt on which the gap between
Piston and cylinder is larger, certainly the opposite side of the
Piston jacket are fed. If it also succeeds in this way, it will settle
To prevent the piston, there are cases in which such grooves occur
The piston runs dry on one side, e.g. at high hydraulic pressures
and a very small gap between piston and cylinder.
The invention aims to overcome this difficulty. According to the
Invention, the piston is provided with grooves, which have the shape of a helix,
e.g. have the shape of a thread. The tips of the thread are preferably rounded
or flattened.
The drawing shows an embodiment of the
Invention: A cylinder 1 is provided with a threaded hole 2 for the supply and the
Drainage of the oil present in working space 3 of the cylinder. In cylinder 1 there is a
Piston 4 can be moved axially by means of a piston rod 6. The cylindrical surface
of the piston is provided with a single helical groove 5, the
Windings - of the groove are as close to one another as is usual with a thread
is. Figs. 3 and 4 show, on an enlarged scale, shapes of the groove.
Rillentiefe. The liquid present in the working space 3 of the cylinder 1 is under
their pressure in the groove 5. pressed so that they the cylinder jacket of the piston
supplied with the fluid over its entire length. A small amount of liquid
may emerge as leakage fluid at the piston rod end of the piston. This quantity
but can be kept negligibly small by choosing accordingly: .. less
Groove depth.
While with the known, parallel, @ circular grooves
the supply of the grooves removed from the work space 3 difficult and frequent
is unreliable, that concern never arises with the illustrated piston: The
Fluid reliably supplies the entire surface area of the piston: @It recommends
In any case, to keep the groove so small that a noticeable capillary effect occurs.
Fig. 3 shows the application of the invention to a three-way valve of a hydraulic

The device, not shown, is moved via the piston rod 15, is the inlet bore

The end position of the piston 14 is the inlet bore
the drain hole 12 and connected to the drain hole 13 in the right end position.
The sealing parts of the piston 14 are threaded with circumferential grooves
16 provided. If no radial forces act on the piston rod 15, it is useful to
execute the thread tips 17 in accordance with FIG. 3 rounded. It becomes through it
reached a line contact between the piston and the valve bore 13 and the
Frictional resistance of the piston in the bore is limited to a minimum. For radial relief
of the control piston 14, the invention does not require the bore
1 $ of the valve to be provided with circumferential grooves, as has been customary up to now. It is sufficient
rather, the bores 11, 12 and 13 diametrically opposite further bores
Assign 19, 20 and 21 with the same cross-section. For example, if the hole is 12
Filled with hydraulic fluid, the pressure can increase over the closely spaced

Radial forces are effective on the piston.
