With arc light electrodes made of carbide, which is decomposed by water, one has with the Difficulty fighting, that the conductivity of the carbide is rather poor. That Carbide conducts the electric current in the cold state, so that it does the same as First class conductor is to be designated, however the resistance of one electrode is in one Length of about 100 mm so great that with the normal passage of current it is about 10 to ι 5 volts in the electrode itself is destroyed. As a result of this great loss of voltage in the electrodes themselves, they almost become glowing along its entire length through the stream and then becomes the carbide through the Oxygen in the air, which is already attacking the carbide in red heat, breaks down.
As a result, the conductivity of the Carbides must necessarily be increased, and this is possible by fine-tuning the carbide divided metal dust, added or given it a wick made of solid charcoal.
The first option is the most advantageous execute, as this will also calm the arc and the electrodes are burned off evenly.
If a solid carbon rod is used to increase the conductivity, this is achieved the same success in that it also helps calm the arc.
Of course, the coal wick must consist of firmly pressed and well-burned coal, since only this has the necessary conductivity. This differs also this carbon rod from a common wick in carbon electrodes by adding a it consists of unfired coal dust and therefore has a completely different purpose should meet.
The. previously proposed shells made of carbon, which were pressed around carbide electrodes, are not to be used because the arc is constantly burning on the outer shell would, while the carbide absolutely does not evaporate. It is also impossible to electrolytically surround the carbide with a copper jacket, since the carbide is known rapidly decomposes in water or acid.
Claims (1)
P ATENT claim:
Process for the production of electrodes for arc lamps from a carbide which is decomposed by water, characterized in that metal powder is added to the carbide mass or the electrodes are provided with a firmly burned carbon wick in order to reduce the resistance of the electrodes.
