Die gebräuchlichen Dichtungen aus vegetabilischer Faser haben eine zu beschränkte Anwendung, da sie vielen Einwirkungen, z. B. von Hitze, Säuren etc. ausgesetzt, nicht widerstandsfähig genug sind. Fig. 1). Während sich der Strang α in der Richtung des Pfeiles fortbewegt, dreht sich die auf einer hohlen Büchse befindliche Spule/, auf welcher jetzt ein Asbestfaden oder Schnur aufgewickelt ist, und giebt dem Strange a die gewünschte Drehung, so dafs derselbe ein Seil ohne Ende bildet. Hat nun dieses Seil ohne Ende die erforderliche Dicke erreicht, so wird die Spule f abgenommen und durch eine andere mit Metalldraht gefüllte ersetzt. Zugleich werden die konischen Räder aufser Eingriff und anstatt dessen die Schnecke g in Gang gesetzt. Der Strang α bewegt sich nun langsamer und in entgegengesetzter Richtung, die Spule f umwickelt denselben spiralförmig mit dem Metalldraht. Damit nun der fertige Ring aus der Büchse h, welche durch ein Zahnrad ζ in Bewegung gesetzt wird, entfernt werden kann, ist dieselbe der Länge nach mit einem Schlitze i versehen; damit nun beim Durchgange des Schlitzes durch das Getriebe k kein Stillstand erfolgt, ist aufser letzterem noch ein zweites Getriebe / angebracht, welches die Bewegung ebenfalls, wie das Rad k, von dem Rade m auf der Hauptwelle d empfängt.
