PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
Von Vignon is in the Comptes rendus 125, p. 448; 126, pp. 1355, 1658; 127, p. 872 a Process has been described, after which one by the action of hydrochloric acid and Chlorate of potash on cellulose gives an oxycellulose. The oxycellulose formed should be used here arise directly from the cellulose through the absorption of oxygen, the mixture of ■ hydrochloric acid and chlorate of potash should therefore be pure have an oxidizing effect.
It has now been found that, under special conditions, when exposed to Hydrochloric acid and chlorate of potash on cellulose form a uniform hydrocellulose of valuable value chemical properties can be obtained. . The essence of this reaction consists in the fact that the chloric acid potash is extremely small for the conversion of the Cellulose in oxycellulose in insufficient quantity and at a specific temperature, namely from 65 to 70 °, is added; the reaction occurs immediately after the addition of chlorate of potassium.
The amount of potassium chlorate to be used is like this. slight that one In any case, thorough oxidation of the cellulose cannot take place. Only at higher Temperatures and a larger amount of chlorate of potash cannot be ignored Oxidation phenomena, which manifest themselves in the formation of humic bodies. On the other hand, however, there would be such a rapid and uniform conversion of the cellulose in hydrocellulose without this small addition of chlorate of potash not possible be. If you want to use the method described by Girard hydrocellulose one must represent cellulose with hydrochloric acid of 21 ° Be. Stand for 24 hours permit. For a factory production of the hydrocellulose would be after this Process a relatively large plant because of the long duration of the process become necessary.
However, in the Annales de chimie et .de physique, 5th series, volume 24, pages 348 and 350 by Girard, the production of hydrocellulose is also described by treating cellulose alone with hydrochloric acid, where it is particularly emphasized that the duration of the reaction is very great on the degree of heating of the reaction mixture, and that higher temperatures accelerate the reaction, lower temperatures slow it down. Be particularly advantageous a Reactionstemperatur of 60 is recommended to 70 0 in this Litteraturstelle, page 348, the choice, but also the required duration of the reaction at least given a few hours for this.
With the new process, however, large quantities of cellulose can be produced in a very short time be converted into hydrocellulose.
The method is expediently carried out in the following manner.
J':J ':
In a vessel equipped with agitator and steam jacket suitable Gefäfse kg shredded cellulose in about 800 kg to 1000 normal hydrochloric acid 21 0 Be are ioo. entered and heated to 65 to 70 0. Then, while stirring from time to time, small amounts, about 10 to 15 g of finely powdered chlorate of potash are added. If you have used about 1 to 2 kg of chlorate of potash for / on / 100 kg of cellulose, the formation of the hydrocellulose is usually complete after a period of about -1 to 1 1/2 hours. The amount of chlorate of potash used and the duration of the reaction depend entirely on the nature of the cellulose to be processed. ' Hard fibers require a longer period of action and larger amounts of chlorate of potash than soft fibers. The end of the reaction can be recognized by the fact that the entire mass has become completely mushy. One centrifuges off, and the acid running off can be used several times for other batches. The hydrocellulose obtained is washed completely with water, dried at about 70 °, and pulverized.
The small addition of chlorate of potash gives the hydrocellulose a very special one Properties; it presents a white, itself powder with a sandy feel, which is in increased measure against acids and alkalis is resistant and is therefore used for the manufacture of objects that should not be attacked by acids and alkalis.
In direct contrast to that of Vignon specified process has the hydrocellulose produced by the new process no aldehydic properties, as neither ammoniacal silver nitrate solution, can still reduce Fehling's solution. So this is also · at the same time a proof, that in addition there is no formation of oxycellulose. The question of whether after the new procedure is not quite a question new, hitherto unknown hydrocellulose has not yet been decided will; the figures obtained in the analysis of a carefully purified preparation, however, show no agreement with those published in Comptes rendus 81, 1105 Declarations. In this way, it also differs in a characteristic way from one only recently in the reports d. D. chem: Ges. 32, page 2497 described hydrocellulose. Its complete insolubility in alkalis and ammonia also provides further evidence that it is not oxycellulose his or May contain admixtures from this body.
In addition, according to Girard's statement, those obtained at different temperatures are also preserved Hydrocelluloses, as numerous experiments have shown, are perfect in their behavior different from one another and none of the same, as in general all without the addition of Hydrocelluloses represented by potassium chlorate can only serve approximately the purposes for which the present Process produced cellulose has already found use.
