Description
The invention relates to an X-ray contrast medium that contains barium sulfate as a contrast substance. In radiography and x-rays, especially of body cavities, especially of the intestinal tract, Barium sulfate is widely used as a contrast agent. This is for this one Purpose excellently suited, however, it has the disadvantage that as a result of it very high density it is difficult to obtain a preparation that meets all requirements which are to be placed on a good X-ray contrast medium.
It is essential that an X-ray contrast medium have a high degree of adhesiveness possesses on the walls of the body cavities and is uniform on the mucous membranes distributed. In addition, a good X-ray contrast medium should be in the form of a suspension Can be stored as long as possible without - the barium sulfate settles. Furthermore, an X-ray contrast medium should be highly resistant even in an acidic medium, well tolerated and miscible with digestive fluids as well as normal Do not disturb the peristalsis of the intestinal tract.
It has also now been found that it favorably has thixotropic properties and are in a condition suitable for storage and distribution, on a powder at best, to any degree desired for radiological purposes, that is z. B. about twenty times its original volume, without phase separation should be diluted.
A number of protective colloids are known which contain barium sulfate X-ray contrast media are intended to counteract sedimentation in a stabilizing manner. These well-known stabilizers are gum arabic, dextrin, tragacanth, gelatin, Agar-agar, pectin, carboxymethyldextran, sodium alginate, methyl cellulose or carboxymethyl cellulose.
However, all of these protective colloids are under the acidic conditions of the intestinal tract not resistant, so that the protective colloid effect there due to the action of acids is canceled compared to the barium sulfate suspension. Attempts were therefore made to administer it such contrast media with known protective colloids, the gastric acid by alkaline To neutralize additives and thus prevent sedimentation of the barium sulfate. However, this led to a further significant disadvantage, since it results in the The emptying mechanism of the stomach is influenced and one so unsafe results achieved in the radiological procedure. Many of the previously mentioned stabilizers used for X-ray contrast media are also themselves in neutral medium not in able to stabilize the contrast medium suspension for a long time, so that this must be freshly prepared before use and not stored in suspension can be. The fresh mixing of X-ray contrast medium before use has however, the disadvantage that air bubbles occur in the suspension, which are can only be removed with difficulty and interfere with radiography.
Containing a barium sulfate and a protective colloid intimately mixed X-ray contrast medium that is acid-resistant and all of the disadvantages outlined above are better known X-ray contrast medium eliminated, one wins according to the invention in such a way that a propylene glycol ester of alginic acid with a degree of esterification is used as a protective colloid added by about 50 ovo.
In addition, you can of course use the usual protective and flavoring agents and, if desired, a suitable dispersant, e.g. B. a citrate, a phosphate or a polyalkyl sulfonate. To achieve a good radiation capacity is said to take the barium sulfate from rounded separate particles of equal size about 5 Ft, preferably about 1 u. The quantitative ratio of the protective colloids to the barium sulfate is at least 0.10 / o, preferably 1 to 50 in.
The X-ray contrast composition according to the invention can either be used as a dry preparation or as a suspension can be obtained and stored.
It has been found that the protective colloid used according to the invention together with barium sulphate and water provides a durable thixotropic suspension, which can be diluted up to twenty times its volume as required, without that the phases separate and the barium sulfate is deposited. The retention period the suspension is and can be further improved by the addition of protective agents if desired, can be further increased by pasteurization. In view of, that the preparation of a dispersion from a dry formulation is a time consuming one Work and must also be carried out with the greatest care, otherwise easy inhomogeneous suspensions are obtained or air bubbles are formed in the preparation, which lead to serious misjudgments in diagnosis, it saves time as well as greater certainty for the radiologist to use a suspension, which in view of their excellent durability immediately in a suitable Pack can be filled and distributed for single use.
The invention is explained in more detail by the following example.
Example barium sulfate ................. 60 kg propylene glycol ester of alginic acid (degree of esterification 50%) 1 kg of sorbic acid ...................... 0.02 kg citric acid ............ 0.04 kg flavoring agent (sodium saccharate, essential Oil) ....... water .................. to 100 1 citric acid, sorbic acid and flavorings are dissolved in about 15 liters of water. The alginic acid ester will added to this solution, and then the barium sulfate is in a mixer to uniform Incorporated consistency. The suspension obtained is diluted to 100 liters with water and then pasteurized at about 700 C and homogenized in a colloid mill.
This suspension has a shelf life of at least 1/2 year at 200 C. Even if in the surface layers after storage for a very long time Insignificant sedimentation should be respected, the Suspension easily due to its thixotropic properties, for example by very gentle shaking or stirring, homogenize again. The product can be up to can be diluted to twenty times its volume with water, without itself sedimentation occurs after long storage.
The suspension can be in a conventional manner, for. B. by spray drying or drying on a roller or drum, converted into a dry preparation will. A suspension made from such a dry preparation generally has has the same shelf life as the original suspension and can also be diluted with water without barium sulfate then settling.
