Accumulator with thickened electrolyte Accumulator with thickened
Electrolytes have long been known, but these accumulators have so far
cannot enforce on a larger scale, as they have various flaws.
.A particular shortcoming of these accumulators is that their
Capacity continuously with each recharge and subsequent reuse
going back. This drop in capacity may not result from the recharging of the
Batteries occurring water loss of the electrolyte can be explained, because if
the water losses that have occurred can also be replenished by refilling
the original capacity of the battery cannot be restored.
This is explained by the fact that the electrolyte thickened by the repeated recharging
is subject to aging and as a result of this aging partially or
completely detached from the electrodes, but also at the points where it touches the
Electrode sticks, cracks in itself. In both cases, the
Obstructed the passage of current through the cell and impaired acid diffusion.
.
In order to eliminate these shortcomings, according to the invention, the combination
the following known features are proposed: a) Use of a thickened
Electrolytes with thixotropic properties and b) wrapping the positive and negative
Electrodes with a fleece or fabric.
According to further features of the invention, a thin, but coarse-pored
Fleece or fabric selected and such spacers arranged between the electrodes,
which place the fleece or fabric on the electrodes and the electrodes at a distance
hold each other, the spacers known for this purpose perforated
and corrugated plastic sheets can be used. A thin, but coarse-pored fleece
from z. B. glass fibers or a suitable acid-resistant organic fiber proves
proved to be particularly suitable, since they are better and more securely anchored in coarse pores
of the thickened electrolyte takes place. The thickness of the fleece should not be 1 mm
exceed. The use of even stronger nonwovens is possible, but leads to
less favorable results. Very thin nonwovens of around 0.25 are most suitable
mm, but 0.25 mm is not to be understood as the lower limit.
The fleece on the electrodes now works in two ways.
On the one hand it holds the thickened electrolyte close to the plate, on the other hand it distributes it
it removes the liquid components of the thickened electrolyte as a result of its wicking effect
evenly over the entire surface of the plate and thus promotes the passage of electricity
and diffusion.
Accumulators with thickened electrolytes with thixotropic properties
are known per se. However, it has been shown that such electrolytes, in particular
when the accumulators filled with it are deeply discharged or for a longer period of time
standing unused, for aging and the formation of cracks, caused by shrinkage,
tend. It has been assumed so far that solely through the evolution of gas
towards the end of the charge the electrolyte moves mechanically and thus its viscosity
is reduced, so that there are already formed cracks or channels in the electrolyte
close again. The transfer of the energy inherent in the gas bubbles to the
However, as practice has shown, electrolytes can only take place as long as
when the electrolyte still completely fills the space between the plates.
This means, however, that once cracks have arisen, those on the plates
formed gases take the path of least resistance and over the already
formed cracks escape through the electrolyte to the outside without
to act mechanically on this.
The installation of a made according to the proposal of the invention
porous absorbent fleece, for example made of glass fibers, with which both the negative
as well as the positive electrodes of the accumulator are encased or immersed,
an aid is created that allows the gas bubbles inherent
Energy can then still be safely transferred to the electrolyte and him
to change in its viscosity, even if this is already due to signs of aging
has shrunk and torn. By choosing an absorbent fleece in which the
thickened electrolyte
penetrate during filling and anchor yourself in it
can, becomes a layer immediately surrounding the plates, impermeable to the gas
created so that the gas bubbles rise only between the plate and this layer
can and are thus forced to transfer their energy through the layer that is impermeable to them
to be transferred to the thickened electrolyte located between the plates.
There is already the use of fiberglass or glass wool for retention
of the electrolyte in accumulators has been proposed. This suggested use
but represents only a parallel experiment on the use of silica as
Addition to dilute sulfuric acid. This experiment is only intended to prove
be made that filling the space between the plates with glass wool
or glass fibers is inexpedient, since this makes the electrolyte available
standing free space is limited to a considerable extent and thereby the capacity
of the accumulator is considerably reduced. In contrast, with an accumulator
according to the invention through the use of relatively thin, porous and absorbent
Nonwovens in connection with a thickened electrolyte with thixotropic properties
the free space available for this is only insignificantly reduced during this time
the signs of aging, as explained above, are effectively counteracted.
The combination according to the invention is already better known for all species
solidified or thickened electrolytes with thixotropic properties can be used.
The reason for this is considered to be that when the battery is being charged, the electrodes
the resulting gas bubbles can no longer penetrate the thickened electrolyte
and thus are forced to rise between the fleece and the electrode. It collects
in some cases larger gas bubbles, which, especially in the case of thin nonwovens, the nonwoven from
push away the electrode a little. However, this movement makes the thixotropic
Part of the electrolyte, especially in the vicinity of the electrodes, returns to its liquid state
transferred so that any cracks that may already have occurred are filled up again.
