The invention relates to a method for producing synthetic resin-impregnated papers, which under Applying low compression pressures to laminates with high weather resistance can be pressed, with the impregnation takes place in two stages with two different types of synthetic resin.
Papers impregnated with curable synthetic resins are of great importance for production of laminates as well as for the surface lamination of boards of all kinds. As so-called "decor papers" or »decorative films« are mainly used in white or colored, opaque pigmented high-grade cellulose papers with or without a decorative print pattern use those with lightfast, colorless or at least very light-colored synthetic resins are impregnated. Only such synthetic resins come in here Consideration that allow a certain hardening state to be intercepted after the impregnation, in which they can then be stored and transported for more or less a long time, to then be found at the consumer Pressure and heat to be cured to the final, mostly plate-shaped objects. the Synthetic resins used for these purposes are in most cases formaldehyde condensation resins, aminoplast resins in particular because of their colorlessness and lightfastness, and finally of these especially the melamine resins in the unmodified or modified state. You have the big one The advantage that the impregnation can be carried out from aqueous or largely aqueous solution that the Resins have a great affinity for cellulose and that ultimately the cured end products are mechanically, chemically and, within certain limits, also thermally very stable.
To a lesser extent, curable polymer resins are also used for the production of decorative films Gained importance. These are generally polymers of polyunsaturated, systems containing ester groups, such as the so-called unsaturated polyesters, in particular but from the esters of polybasic, saturated dicarboxylic acids with unsaturated alcohols and here especially of the diallyl esters of the various phthalic acids, such as diallyl phthalate. These types of synthetic resins too possess some great advantages for the stated purpose. They harden as polymerization resins without the elimination of volatile constituents, only a very low pressure is required the final processing and result in very tension-free curing products of high flexibility. aside from that the resins have excellent weather resistance because of their high hydrophobicity.

Both the polycondensation resins mentioned and the polymerization resins mentioned adhere when they are used as impregnation resins for paper, they also have a number of deficiencies that make up their own Very difficult to use in some areas, in some cases even to exclude them.
In order to achieve perfect surfaces, the aminoplast resin molds require a relatively high minimum pressure, which is around 15 to 20 kg / cm 2 and which excludes the use of a number of carrier plates. Because of their high degree of crosslinking and not too high molecular weights, they are quite brittle and therefore too prone to cracking for some purposes. In addition, because a proportion of hydrophilic groups remain in the final condensate, combined with their certain brittleness under heavy loads, they cannot be regarded as absolutely weather-resistant.
The polymer resins mentioned do not have these deficiencies, but have the major disadvantage that, due to their lack of affinity for cellulose, they only wet it very poorly, it doesn't matter whether from an aqueous dispersion or from a solution in an organic solvent or applied to the paper in its own monomer. This leads, despite the high weather resistance of the resins, even when exposed to moisture and especially hot water or Superheated steam leads to strong swelling phenomena in the pressed film, since the resin is still like any other So hydrophobic organic plastic lets water through to a small extent, which then affects the bad encased cellulose and causes the phenomenon mentioned. In addition, the resin is the final Hardening added peroxide catalysts sometimes have unpleasant effects on the paper cause such. B. discoloration, destruction of the dyes and the like.
