Gebr. FLICK in OPLADEN b. KÖLN. Verfahren zur Darstellung von Nitriten. Gebr. FLICK in OPLADEN b. COLOGNE. Process for the representation of nitrites.
Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom 11. März 1900 ab.Patented in the German Empire on March 11, 1900.
A wide variety of proposals have so far been made for the representation of nitrites from nitrates made and in part also practically carried out, but almost consistently with little economic success. In principle, the procedure for the representation of nitrites is based on the reduction of nitrates respectively. of their acid content and most of them were added to it common reducing agents considered.
The present invention also aims the reduction of the acidic part of the nitrates, by means of that for this particular one Purpose not yet used sulphurous acid in gaseous form. Experiments have shown that if one goes over one to about Mixture of nitrate and a base, especially alkali or alkaline earth base, heated for sintering, conducts gaseous sulphurous acid, the nitrate is completely reduced to nitrite, while the sulphurous acid, oxidized to sulfuric acid, mixes with the free Base connects in the state of origin. The base itself can be present as a carbonate, however, the free base is respectively more effective. their hydrate.
The course of the reaction can be explained by the following equations, where: The nitrate to be decomposed is assumed to be sodium nitrate, and quicklime as the absorbing base may be.
NaNO3+ S O2 = Na NO2 + S O3
SO3+ Ca O = CaSOi, NaNO 3 + S O 2 = Na NO 2 + S O 3
SO 3 + Ca O = CaSOi,
oder als Einheitsgleichung:or as a unit equation:
Na N O3 -f Ca O + S O2 =
Na N O2 + CaS O4. Na N O 3 -f Ca O + S O 2 =
From the product obtained, a mixture of sodium nitrite and gypsum, this becomes Nitrite leached with water and the solution further processed in the usual way to pure nitrite, while the plaster of paris remains as an insoluble residue. The decomposition of the nitrate runs smoothly and completely, the yield is almost the theoretically calculated and the separation from the insoluble sulphate and accordingly the purification of the nitrite very much easy. If bases of soluble sulfates are used, e.g. B. alkali hydrates or carbonates, so alkali sulphate is obtained, but this makes it difficult to separate from nitrite and make it pure.
It is important here that the sulphurous acid is as free of air as possible, so that it does not a secondary oxidation of this to sulfuric acid takes place, which on the nitrate and especially would decompose the already formed nitrite and therefore reduce the yield.
The amount of base to be admixed is not tied to the molecular ratio; an excess is even advantageous.
The representation of nitrite by melting a mixture of identical molecules of anhydrous Potassium sulphate and saltpetre is already from Etard (Annual Report of Chemistry 1877, p. 23g) recommended, whereby nitrite and alkali sulphate result from the following equation:
KN O3 + K2SO3 = KNO2 + K2S O4. KN O 3 + K 2 SO 3 = KNO 2 + K 2 S O 4 .
However, this procedure cannot be regarded as equivalent to the present one because it must be assumed that, according to the present procedure,
At a higher temperature, the sulphurous acid causes a direct reduction in the acid content of the Nitrates takes place. The following is used to justify this assumption. One heats up an intimate mixture of sodium nitrate and calcium sulfite occurs when nitrite formation begins immediately a smoldering of the mixture, while this when passing gaseous sulphurous acid over a heated mixture of nitrate and hydrated lime does not Case is. The course of the process is accordingly different, which is also reflected in the after the present process shows the higher yield achieved. Presumably find the difference in the course of the two working processes their explanation by the direct action of the sulphurous acid on the nitrate.
The procedure is generally carried out in such a way that one can do anything in any way the saltpetre. and mixes the lime thoroughly. This is best achieved by that the caustic lime is quenched with a nitrate solution. There are therefore z. B. 160 kg caustic lime quenched with a concentrated aqueous solution of 200 kg sodium nitrate, this mixture is then passed over air-free sulphurous acid in suitable apparatus until about the beginning of sintering until all nitrate has been converted into nitrite. The reaction product is leached with hot water, and the nitrite solution is filtered off from the insoluble gypsum. The filtrate is obtained by evaporation and crystallized on pure sodium nitrite.
