Für die Desinfektion von Wohnräumen, Kleidungsstücken u. s. w. hat in neuerer Zeit die Verwendung von Formaldehyd immer gröfsere Bedeutung gewonnen und namentlich haben sich jene Verfahren als am wirksamsten erwiesen, bei welchen der Formaldehyd in sehr fein zerstäubter Form feucht (sprühregenartig) zur Wirkung gelangt. Ein Nachtheil dieses Verfahrens besteht nur darin, dafs zur Erzielung einer durchgreifenden Abtödtung der Keime eine längere Einwirkungsdauer des zerstäubten Formaldehyds erforderlich ist, die durch die Verdünnung des angewendeten Desinficiens bedingt ist, weil höchstens 40 procentige Formaldehydlösungen herstellbar sind und diese noch beim Verstäuben wesentlich durch den Wasserdampf weiter verdünnt werden. Es wurde nun gefunden, dafs selbst gesättigte Formaldehydlösungen noch im Stande sind, beträchtliche Mengen von Acrolein · zu lösen, so dafs es leicht gelingt, Lösungen von 60 bis 70 pCt. Gehalt an Aldehyd herzustellen. Da das Acrolein an sich zum Mindesten in dem gleichen Mafse wie der Formaldehyd desinficirend wirkt, so wird durch die Verwendung dieser concentrirten Aldehydlösung eine viel raschere und durchgreifendere desinficirende Wirkung erzielt. Diese concentrirten Aldehydlösungen können in allen den Apparaten verwendet werden, die zur Verwendung von Formaldehyd in feuchtem, zerstäubtem Zustande oder zum Verdunsten von Formaldehyd empfohlen wurden.
