Description
A method for subbing hydrophobic layer carriers for hydrophilic photographic emulsions addition to the patent: 1040898 subject of the main patent is a method for subbing of layer supports for photographic emulsions by applying and drying of an adhesion of the hydrophylen photographic emulsion on the hydrophobic substrate effecting solution, according to which a solution of one or more copolymers of maleic anhydride and one or more other polymerizable vinyl group-containing monomers which are unsubstituted at the xC atom of the vinyl group in organic solvents or solvent mixtures is used as the substrate solution.
In the further development of this procedure, the surprising finding was made made that in the context of the same to a very much improved adhesion between hydrophilic photographic emulsion and hydrophobic support, in particular in the case of hydrophobic layers made of synthetic polymers, if you Substrate solutions of the aforementioned type, d. H. those of one or more copolymers of maleic anhydride and one or more other polymerizable vinyl group-containing Monomers that are unsubstituted on the a-carbon atom of the vinyl group in organic solvents or solvent mixtures, which are also halogenated at the same time contain aromatic oxy compounds and / or halogenated aliphatic carboxylic acids. This applies in particular to adhesive layers made of synthetic polyesters, e.g. B. those based on terephthalic acid and glycol, which according to the hitherto known methods can only be subbed extremely difficult. It appears It is particularly surprising that the process according to the invention is also carried out on such layer supports in the simplest way of working delivers adhesive layers that meet the most diverse requirements, which to this layer. must be asked, fully meet.
The aforementioned difficulties, which polyester films a useful Opposing substrateing are due to the following two facts: 1. Polyester films are very strongly hydrophobic, so they are hydrophilic towards the anchored photographic emulsion is only very slightly related.
Polyester films are unusually resistant to solvents, so that the swelling of the film surface necessary for adequate anchoring is achieved difficult to achieve. In the previously known processes for subbing Polyester films have attempted to overcome these difficulties through a number of Measures to be mastered, but all of which prove to be more or less unsatisfactory have turned out.
So one has z. B. tried to reduce the close relationship between the Polyester film and the actual substrate layer through several intermediate layers to bridge. Often these intermediate layers must also be used before the biaxial stretching process, which is necessary for the production of the foils, are applied. Such procedures however, are unsatisfactory from the outset because of the increased workload.
Or you have tried to remove the surface of the polyester film by chemical To change reactions in such a way that the differences mentioned are different from those that are chemically different photographic emulsion can be softened. To carry out such reactions, but you have to use naturally very aggressive reagents, with which the danger exists that they can adversely affect the photographic emulsion.
The lack of suitable solvents has to be circumvented in this way tried that one initially without the use of solvents for the polyester film has applied a layer of adhesives - in some cases before the biaxial stretching process -, over which the actual layer is usually mediated by further intermediate layers Substrate layer follows. However, such layer combinations often have only a low adhesive strength.
Surprisingly, it manages all of the aforementioned difficulties to be overcome with the aid of the method according to the invention and with the simplest working method Excellent adhesive layers even on such difficult-to-subbed polyester films to create a perfect anchorage in the photographic baths ensure the photographic emulsion with the substrate.
There is also a particular advantage of the method according to the invention in that under the same the adhesive layers with the conventional methods and machines can be applied.
Halogenated aromatic compounds suitable for the process according to the invention Oxy compounds and halogenated aliphatic carboxylic acids, which together with the Copolymers of the process according to the main patent are applied in known in large numbers. For example: o-chlorophenol, p-chlorophenol, p-chloro-m-cresol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol, monochloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, Trifluoroacetic acid, j3-chloropropionic acid, etc.
These compounds can be used individually or in mixtures together with applied to one or more copolymers of the process according to the main patent after being dissolved in a suitable volatile solvent are. Acetone is particularly suitable for this purpose, but other low-boiling points can also be used Ketones, esters or ring-shaped ethers and the like are used alone or in a mixture Find.
The concentration of the copolymer in the total solvent is preferably 10 to 20 g / l, and the ratio of copolymer to halogenated aromatic oxide compound and / or halogenated aliphatic carboxylic acid preferably between 1: 2 and 1: 5 parts by weight.
The temperatures of the solutions to be applied and the drying temperatures must of course be adapted to the individual substances used.
The adhesive layers proposed according to the invention can by themselves can be used alone or in conjunction with other layers.
