So
Procedure for rendering radioactive substances harmless when handling
with radioactive isotopes, such as those used in research work or in therapy
find is the possibility of contamination of the human body, predominantly
the skin on its surface, and all of its surroundings, d. H. the laundry, clothes,
Furniture, floors, tools, water, etc., given. The same can be done through fission products,
which arise in nuclear power plants or reactors or ultimately through corresponding
Disasters of various magnitudes occur. In acute danger or
in order to avoid the same it is necessary to the human body and the environment
first of all to free from the adhering radioactive pollution. For this were
Tried and suggested in various tests and also about it in
reported in the literature, e.g. B. Öle-Fette-Wachse, No. 23 (1956), pp. 679 to 680. So
have complex-forming acids, such as B. polyphosphoric acid, citric acid, tartaric acid,
other complexing agents or the water-soluble salts thereof, to render them harmless
of multivalent, radioactive elements or multivalent cations, such as strontium,
Yttrium, cerium, iron, phosphorus and iodine, very well proven.
It has been shown that the human skin by splashing or
Spraying with solutions of the substances mentioned or by bathing in them or when taking place
localized cleaning by treatment with soaps or cleaning agents,
which contain the substances mentioned in sufficient quantity, completely radioactive
Dirt can be freed. Lingerie, work clothes, outerwear and all others
Textiles are completely disinfected in the same way when they undergo a washing process
are subjected to what the means mentioned alone or together with usual
Detergents are used. Machines, laboratory equipment, tools or anything else
Work equipment will be long enough with solutions of the means mentioned of sufficient
Concentration sprayed or rinsed or soaked in. Furniture, floors, walls
etc. are treated in a similar way. In all cases where it is possible
the temperature of the solutions used is increased, e.g. B. to 60 or 90 °
C in washing processes.
It goes without saying that that means is selected in each case
must be, which due to its chemical properties has no adverse effect
on human skin or the objects or materials to be cleaned.
When using alkali polyphosphate solutions are in no case unpleasant
Side effects to be feared, so that they are almost universal for the disposal of radioactive
Substances can be used.
It is also obvious that after treatment with polyphosphate,
Citrate or tartrate solution still has to be rinsed with pure water.
It has now been found that not only polyvalent metals or polyvalent
Cations can be removed from everyday objects in the manner described,
but surprisingly also cations that form complexes with polyphosphoric acid,
Citric acid or tartaric acid are only extremely weak or hardly capable
and that further the isotopes present in the solutions thus obtained in per se
known way can be precipitated and made harmless with precipitants.
Thus, with cesium or with isotopes bound to anions, z. B. cesium salts,
contaminated everyday objects with solutions of polymeric phosphoric acids, citric acid
or tartaric acid or its salts are treated and then the cesium with
Precipitants are precipitated and destroyed.
Milk of lime, for example, can be used as a precipitant. The solution is mixed with so much milk of lime that all polyphosphoric acid, citric and tartaric acid compounds contained in it are precipitated as insoluble calcium salts or basic calcium compounds. The precipitation. safely performed quantitatively with an excess of calcium hydroxide and can be carried out both in the cold and at elevated temperatures. The precipitate is allowed to settle and is separated by filtration from the clear supernatant liquid, which is free from all radioactive impurities. The precipitate, which has only a very small volume in relation to the amount of water treated, can be rendered harmless in the usual way . B. aluminum or iron salts, where it is appropriate to ensure neutral to alkaline reactions. The use of, for example, aluminum salts as precipitants has proven particularly useful when isotopes bound to anions are present. In general, all inorganic salts or compounds which are sufficiently insoluble with polyphosphoric acids, citric acid, tartaric acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, are suitable for capturing the carriers of radioactivity. EXAMPLE 1 In a drum washing machine with a capacity of 10 kg dry laundry, items of laundry and work smocks contaminated with radioactive cesium (Geiger counter: 80,000 pulses) are pretreated with 50 liters of a solution of 2 μl of polyphosphate with an average composition of Na9P7Oz2 for 10 minutes at 45.degree. After the liquor has been drained off, it is aftertreated at 90 ° C. for 15 minutes with 50 l of a solution of 2 μl of the same polyphosphate. Then it is rinsed three times for 5 minutes each time with 50 liters of water, 1 g / l of the polyphosphate is only added to the first rinse bath. After the end of the washing process, the Geiger counter showed zero pulses. The waste water from this and all subsequent washing processes carried out in a similar manner are collected in a 12 msecs container, stirred with 500 l milk of lime containing 18 kg Ca (OH) z for 30 minutes and allowed to settle for at least 6 hours. The settled sludge is then drained from the conical lower end of the container, combined with the filtration residue of the supernatant liquid, dried and sealed in a radiation-proof manner.
Example 2 Laboratory equipment made of glass and metal that contains radioactive cesium
were contaminated in the form of cesium chloride (Geiger counter: 5000 pulses per cubic centimeter)
were placed in a solution of 10 g / 1 citric acid and in it for 24 hours
Left 60 ° C. The solution was renewed twice, followed by thorough
rinsed with pure water. The wastewater was collected as in Example 1 and treated further.
