Kohlenstoff, Magnesium, Aluminium, Silicium, Titan u. a. In the manufacture of oxide cathodes, e.g. B. from alkaline earth oxide, is used to activate the Oxide activators that are contained in the carrier metal for the emitting oxide. As activators serve small amounts of chemical elements such as carbon, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, Titanium et al. So far, magnesium and silicon have been used with preference, along with other elements. The effect of such activators is that the electron-emitting oxide or oxide mixture is reduced to a small extent, so that free alkaline earth metal is formed.
As necessary as such activators are and as important as their chemical effect on the alkaline earth oxide is, however, they are so disturbing when the reaction with the alkaline earth oxide proceeds too quickly. When forming or at the operating temperature of the cathode then evaporates in excess Alkaline earth metal, and it also evaporates activator metal which does not react at all, in the assumed So magnesium is an example. Both the uselessly evaporating barium as well as the quickly evaporating Magnesium beats up on the other parts inside the which do not belong to the cathode Discharge tube down and lead to insulation defects or an unpleasant grid emission. It is also perceived as annoying that the activator is quickly consumed by this evaporation, d. H. for the reduction of alkaline earth oxide with a long nominal service life of an electric discharge tube the alkaline earth oxide is no longer available for reduction. Can also be in presence of elemental silicon as an activator between the carrier metal and alkaline earth oxide all too quickly form a disruptive intermediate layer because of their high electrical resistance.
To avoid these disadvantages, in an oxide cathode for electrical discharge tubes, which from a support made of nickel containing an activator in the form of a chemical compound, on which the emission layer is applied, there is, proposed according to the invention, that this activator consists of magnesium silicide or that magnesium silicide is admixed with it.
It is already known that additions of the elements aluminum, Mix in silicon and magnesium. However, the magnesium and silicon build up in the Usually, independently of one another, they enter the nickel lattice of the carrier body. Then the same ones occur disadvantages already mentioned above.

stabile Verbindung dar, die gleichzeitig zwei Aktivatorelemente enthält. Diese Verbindung verdampft sehr viel langsamer als etwa Magnesium und kann daher auch während einer langen Sollebensdauer einer Entladungsröhre dem elektronenemittierenden Erdalkalioxyd als mildes Reduktionsmittel zur Verfügung stehen.stable connection that contains two activator elements at the same time. This compound vaporizes a lot much slower than magnesium, for example, and can therefore also be used for a long nominal service life of a discharge tube the electron-emitting alkaline earth oxide is available as a mild reducing agent stand.
The activator consisting of a chemical compound can be used in the manufacture of the Add nickel to the existing cathode support of the nickel melt.
If this melting process is to be avoided, a powder metallurgical one can also be used Process work, i.e. the nickel is first pulverized, and then the nickel powder is made the activator compound, which is also powdered, namely the magnesium silicide, is added. For this Powder mixture is then shaped into the cathode support and placed in an oxidizing atmosphere or in a vacuum sintered together.
