Description
Photosensitive photographic silver halide layers and material, Containing Such The present invention relates to photographic materials and a process for their preparation, and particularly relates to photosensitive ones Silver halide emulsions, the polyvinylpyrrolidone halides as stabilizing and antifoggants, methods of making these emulsions and for applying the same to a support as well as the photosensitive obtained in this way Material.
It is known that photosensitive emulsions, such as. B. Gelatin silver halide emulsions, tend to form haze. This fogging is generally caused by excessive Maturation of the emulsions, prolonged storage at elevated temperatures and humidity and caused by prolonged development. To the emergence of these undesirable To prevent properties, the emulsions were previously certain chemical compounds added, which increases the stability of the photosensitive layers produced therefrom improve and reduce their tendency to fog. Everyone known for it so far However, agents had the disadvantage that when added to the emulsion they had a sensitivity and / or Caused loss of contrast of the emulsion.
There are already stabilizers for halogen silver emulsions, the polyalkylene oxides, known, but they have the disadvantage that they - as far as they are commercially available at all - are extremely expensive.
The present invention is therefore to provide a photosensitive layer, which is sensitive and stable, has a reduced tendency shows fog and has good contrast.
Furthermore, a light-sensitive layer is to be created which contains a compound which stabilizes them against fogging, but theirs Sensitivity and / or its contrast is not significantly affected.
Finally, a light-sensitive layer should be created, contains the polyvinylpyrrolidone halides as anti-fogging and stabilizing agents.
Es wurde gefunden, daß, wenn ein Polyvinylpyrrolidon-Halogenid, wie z. B. Polyvinylpyrrolidon-Jod (s. It has been found that when a polyvinylpyrrolidone halide, such as. B. polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (see US Pat. No. 2739922) or polyvinylpyrrolidone, which contains chlorine or bromine and iodine (see US Pat. No. 2,754,254), is added to a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion, which stabilizes the layer cast therewith and a Fog formation is prevented. After the layer has been subjected to the incubator sample, this reduced tendency to form haze is particularly pronounced. In this sample, the film or paper coated with the emulsion is kept at an elevated temperature and high humidity for a certain time. If the antifoggant according to the invention is added to the emulsion, this treatment does not cause any loss of sensitivity. If very high concentrations of the antifoggant according to the invention are used, a certain loss of sensitivity can be observed in some cases if the emulsion is examined immediately after it has been applied to the film or paper. After completion of the incubator test, however, the layer regains its original sensitivity, while the reduced tendency to fog is maintained.
The antifoggants of the present invention can be used in any of the emulsions any stage of the manufacturing process can be added. You can either can be added as "ripening agents" or as pouring additives. Become a "ripening agent" during ripening or during that stage of the emulsion making process admitted in the The sensitivity of the emulsion is increased. These additions can be made before, during or after the addition of the soluble silver salt to the soluble halide in the presence of a suitable colloidal carrier such as z. B. gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol, solubilized casein or albumin. If the antifoggant of the invention is used as a casting additive, it will the emulsion just before application to a suitable carrier, such as. B. glass, Paper or film, added, d. H. at a time when the emulsion came in handy has reached its maximum sensitivity.
In some cases it is appropriate to use the one used according to the invention Anti-fogging and stabilizing compound in a separate form from the emulsion To accommodate shift, d. H. as an underlayer or on the gelatin surface as a protective layer applied to reduce mechanical damage will. In other cases, the desired result can be achieved by making the connection added to one or all of the processing baths or the pre- and post-treatment baths will.
If the polyvinylpyrrolidone halide is used as a »ripening agent«, so it is used in the emulsion preferably in amounts of 1 to 100 mg per 0.4 mole of silver halide and as "coating agent" preferably in an amount of 10 to 1 g per 0.4 mol of silver halide admitted. The optimal amount depends largely on the type of emulsion and should be determined individually in each case.
The polyvinylpyrrolidone halide according to the invention can also be used in conjunction with other known antifoggants and stabilizers as well as in combination with sensitizers, such as B. sulfur compounds, colloidal metals and reduction sensitizers and with accelerators such as B. the polyoxyethylenes (see USA patent 1970 578) and their derivatives and polyvinylpyrrolidone.
The antifoggants according to the invention can also be used in a wide variety of ways Kinds of photographic emulsions can be added such as B. to non-sensitized, orthochromatic, panchromatic and X-ray emulsions, as well as emulsions, those used to make photographic paper and those that use color couplers contain.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine is preferably used as the antifoggant. This is a well-known compound, the chemical structure of which has not yet been precisely established and which contains a substantial amount of iodine, which is mixed with the polyvinylpyrrolidone probably related in a similar way to strength. The halogen content may be between 2 and 35 ° / o.
