Process for decolorizing liquid vegetable or animal

in addition to inorganic adsorbents such as fuller's earth, silica gel or aluminum oxide gel,
also powdered activated carbons, which can be used alone or in combination with
other adsorbents can be applied. The active charcoal comes primarily here
the task of selectively removing those impurities that do not or
are only slightly polar and mostly colored or the liquids to be treated
impart an undesirable smell or taste.
In manchen Fällen
It is known to be removed from various adsorbents

the use of activated carbon to purify organic substances in a liquid state

one achieves a better separation effect with such activated carbons than with the dykes

In the case of the usual commercial products, this activated carbon is between 5 and 12%.
: According to the prior art, the water content of the coal was considered to be
insignificant component not respected. The acidic or alkaline activated carbons
were used with the water content corresponding to the usual commercial goods.
In certain cases, activated charcoal is also used as an aqueous pulp for special purposes
or applied in aqueous slurry, with the coal when used for cleaning
organic, water-immiscible liquid substances are mostly used
a catalytic effect, e.g. B. the transfer of atmospheric oxygen for an oxidation,
exercises. It has now surprisingly been found that powdered activated carbon
especially when decolorizing liquid vegetable or animal fats
is effective when it has a water content of more than 15% and less than
60% additional acids of more than 5%, calculated as sulfuric acid and related
on the dry coal, or in other cases more than 31% alkali, calculated
as caustic soda and based on the dry coal. The application of powder charcoal
takes place according to the invention by stirring in.
zu feuchten, als Brei oder als Aufschlämmung angewandten ähnlichen Produkten rieseltrocken;
The optimal content of powdered activated carbon in water within
the limit provided according to the invention and the acid content of more than 51) / o
or lye of more than 30% depends on the type of coal and the properties
of the fatty oils to be decolorized. The activated carbon according to the invention is in contrast
to moist, slurry or slurry applied similar products free-flowing dry;
the water content is therefore limited to an upper limit of 60%.

which can also contain water and the chemicals mentioned above, or else

The various adsorbents can also be mixed with one another or in stages
can be used separately.

auch bei Anwesenheit von mehr als 59/o Säure zwar besser als mit neutraler Aktivkohle;

*) "Activated charcoal X" is a finely ground charcoal that is used in the
Steam process from charcoal was obtained.
This example shows the advantage of using acidic activated carbon with a higher water content in accordance with the labeling mentioned in the description for degumming a crude cottonseed oil. It is known that fatty oils, especially when second-pressed oils are present under high pressure, contain mucilage, phosphatides, lipoids, etc., which are often separated out by washing with dilute acid. This often results in emulsions which only slowly separate into an oily and an aqueous layer. Occasionally, there is only insufficient separation of the opacifying mucilage and oil losses at the oil-water boundary layer because the colloids which separate out include oil. If activated charcoal according to the invention is used instead of a conventional scrubbing, after separation of such charcoal, which excretes the slimy substances due to its acidic and at the same time adsorptive properties, after filtration - if necessary after the addition of kieselguhr - one obtains bright, largely de-lubricated filtrates without great loss of oil. As shown in Example 1, the effect of the charcoal can be assessed by placing the oil treated with stirring at 60 ° C. for 30 minutes in a sample, for. B. mixed or emulsified under the same conditions with 10 parts of water to 90 parts of oil with a high-speed turbo stirrer and the time required to obtain an oil that initially separates out clearly as an oily phase is determined. The more mucilage that is separated, the faster the oil clears. The different water and acid contents of the same activated carbon X mentioned in Example 1 show that a significantly better effect is achieved with this mode of application of the activated carbon if it contains more than 151% water and at the same time more than 59% acid. If the water content is too low, the achievable effect is better than with neutral activated charcoal, even if more than 59% acid is present; however, it still increases significantly if the water content is adjusted to more than 15% and less than 60% according to the invention.

Anwendung solcher Kohle bringen.
Example 2 Discoloration and cleaning of dark, degummed and deacidified cottonseed oil Characteristic data Color according to L ovibond in 51/4 "cuvette = 13.1 cm layer thickness: 163 yellow 20 red Acid number 0.09 Treatment for 30 minutes at 80 ° C. with stirring with fuller's earth or mixtures of fuller's earth with activated charcoal A *) (80 parts fuller's earth -f- 20 parts activated charcoal) '^') "Activated charcoal A" is a chlorine-zinc-activated charcoal. % Content of applied

Example 2 shows the advantage of using hydrous and alkaline activated carbon mixed with fuller's earth in the decolorization and purification of dark, degummed and deacidified cottonseed oil which has been treated in the usual way with a mixture of 80 parts fuller's earth and 20 parts activated carbon. Here, too, the same activated carbon works much better if its water content is higher than 15% and at the same time its alkali content is greater than 30/0. A high alkali content alone, without a sufficient water content according to the invention, cannot produce a sufficient effect when using such charcoal. If the coal is too moist, its active surface can no longer have an adsorptive effect, so that the water content must be limited upwards.
