Der Sporn, Fig. 1, soll das Zerreifsen der Beinkleider und die unnöthige Belästigung des Pferdes durch das Rad verhindern. Zu diesem Zweck ist das Rad von einem Gehäuse umschlossen und tritt durch den Einschnitt beim Andruck hervor, während es beim Aufheben des Druckes wieder zurücktritt, indem sich das Gehäuse unter Einwirkung einer Schraubenfeder über das Rad schiebt. Das Gehäuse selbst kann flach oder rund sein. Fig. 2, das runde oder flache Gehäuse CD, wird durch eine im Spornhalse ruhende Feder gehalten. Beim Andruck senkt sich das Gehäuse, wodurch das Rad hervortritt.
