Description
DEUTSCHESGERMAN
The present invention relates to a new one and improved method of insolubilizing artificial filaments or fibers which are spun of solutions of proteins, for example of peanut protein or casein, in aqueous alkaline or other aqueous solvents in acidified saline coagulating baths will.
The expression "insoluble threads" are understood to mean those which are found in a bath that Contains 0.1% sulfuric acid and 0.25% sodium sulphate, are insoluble when immersed therein at a temperature of 97 ° C for 90 minutes.
A number of proposals have been made to use coagulated wet-spun protein filaments insoluble by making them highly concentrated with formaldehyde in the presence of an acidified aqueous saline solution, for example by the methods of the British patents 513 910 and 533 952 or the German patents 842 826 or 821 392. It was also already proposed to make continuously running bundles of protein threads insoluble in this way, that according to the German patent specification 917 087 and the British patent specification 623 460 methods and apparatus described are treated.
From the German patent 725 984 it is known to use aldehyde-hardened protein threads, in particular those made from casein, which are post-treated with an acidified aldehyde solution, so as to make the threads more resistant to hot aqueous baths. The procedure is as follows that an excess of the treatment liquids is removed from the threads and these without washing, then dried at a temperature below 100 ° C and then heated to a temperature of 100 ° C or above it can be heated up to 115 ° C.
In addition, German patent 842 826 and USA patent 2 506 253 contain processes described in which protein threads are treated twice with aqueous formaldehyde solutions. None of these publications relate to the process steps of the present invention, the Single threads are then dried after treatment with a salt-free aqueous formaldehyde solution and continue to be heated while. Formaldehyde is on the threads. But that is of the greatest importance This is important for obtaining high-strength threads that are resistant to acid baths.

Preferably, after being impregnated with the formaldehyde solution, the filament bundles are stretched, for example by 200 fl / o, and they are kept in the stretched state while they dry, at least long enough so that they do not shrink before the bundle is heated to such a temperature until insolubility is reached.
The drying of the single threads, regardless of whether they are stretched or not, can be done at Temperatures between 15 and 160 ° C are carried out and the insolubility of the individual threads Temperatures between 140 and 180 ° C take place.
Wenn der pH-Wert dieser Lösung auf zwischen 9,5 und 11 eingestellt werden soll, kann beispielsweise eine geringe Menge von Natriumstannat, Natriumaluminat oder Natriumhydroxyd verwendet werden.as sodium borate, sodium aluminate, sodium stannate, sodium tungstate, sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, potassium chromate or pyridine can be used to adjust the pH value of the solution of formaldehyde between 6.5 and 7.5. When the pH value of this solution should be adjusted to between 9.5 and 11, for example, a small amount of sodium stannate, sodium aluminate, or sodium hydroxide can be used.
Suitable pre-hardening agents consist of solutions of formaldehyde to which salts, such as sodium chloride and / or sodium sulfate, can be added. These solutions are brought to a pH value 4.5 to 5. If threads are treated with these pre-hardening agents for 3 minutes, the threads are hardened to such an extent that they can be stretched by 150 to 400%. The threads treated with the precuring agents are washed to remove the excess salt.
The careful impregnation of the bundle of threads, for example a continuously running one Bundle, is preferably done by a pad treatment, i. H. through a treatment in which a bundle of threads soaked in or with a liquid and then the excess of liquid, for example by mangling, is squeezed out.
The treatment temperature for rendering insoluble is between 140 and 180 ° C. At one temperature from 160 ° C the insoluble state is generally brought about after heating for 10 minutes, and the resulting product usually has a satisfactory strength after acid dyeing. Heating to 160 ° C. for up to 2 hours has shown that this increases the wet strength of the threads after the acid dyeing is improved without the dyeing of the threads being significantly impaired.
The invention is illustrated in the following examples in which parts are parts by weight, but without to be limited to this.
A ripened alkaline solution of peanut globu-Hn is spun into a congulation bath consisting of an aqueous solution containing 2% sulfuric acid and 24% sodium sulfate and having a temperature of 30.degree. The threads are withdrawn therefrom at a speed which is greater than the speed at which the spinning solution is pressed into the precipitation bath, and the coagulated threads are then stretched to 400% in a bath of the same composition. The filaments are then allowed to slacken in a bath which contains 22% sodium sulfate and 2.5% sodium chloride and has a power of 8 to 9, this treatment being carried out at a temperature of 25 ° C. for 5 minutes. Then, the filaments are pre-hardened in a bath 7 minutes containing 20% sodium sulfate, 2.5% sodium chloride and 1.5% formaldehyde, a pH value of 5 and a temperature of 50 ° C has. The pre-hardened threads are then mangled to remove the excess liquid, washed in water to free them from the salts and dried at a temperature of 80 ° C. These filaments are then impregnated by being immersed in a solution containing 10% formaldehyde and having been adjusted by the addition of sodium hydroxide to a pH value of 7.5. The threads are then mangled again. The impregnated filaments are then carefully dried at a temperature of 80 ° C. and finally subjected to a heat treatment at 160 ° C. for 30 minutes, whereby they become insoluble. The threads obtained in this way have an average strength of 11.6 kg / mm 2 at 21 ° C. and 65% relative humidity and a wet strength of 6.3 kg / mm 2 , which is not significantly reduced if the threads are used for 90 minutes long immersed in a 97 ° C bath containing 0.1% sulfuric acid and 0.25% sodium sulfate.
The process described in Example 1 is repeated up to the pre-hardening stage with formaldehyde, whereupon the individual threads are washed with water until they are essentially free of salt and whereupon they are then dried at 80.degree. The dry, pre-cured filaments are then impregnated with a solution containing 10% formaldehyde and has been adjusted by addition of sodium hydroxide to a pH value of 7.2. The single threads impregnated in this way are mangled and then stretched by 200% in the air and dried at 80 ° C. in the stretched state. Then the threads are treated for 30 minutes at 160 ° C in the released state. The filaments thus made insoluble have a silky appearance and are very good in color. They have mean dry and wet strengths of 17.8 and 8.2 kg / mm 2 , respectively, which decrease to values of 11.6 (dry) and 6.9 kg / mm 2 (wet) when the threads are used for 90 minutes treated for a long time at 97 ° C in a bath containing 0.1% sulfuric acid and 0.25% sodium sulfate.
The procedure described in Example 2 is repeated except that the impregnation solution contains 10% of formaldehyde and has been brought by the addition of sodium stannate at a pH value of 10.5. The insolubilized threads thus obtained have mean dry and wet strength values of 17.2 and 10.6 kg / mm 2 , respectively, which decrease to 11.0 (dry) and 5.2 kg / mm 2 (wet) when the Filaments are heated to 97 ° C for 90 minutes in a bath containing 0.1% sulfuric acid and 0.25% sodium sulfate.
