Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
KLASSE 20: Eisenbahnbetrieb.CLASS 20: Railway operations.
It is well known that electric railways that use the rails as a return line occur often there are great differences in tension in the latter. These tension differences are the causes of the vagabondirenden earth currents, which disturbances on earth magnetic Measurements and telephone systems as well as electrolytic decomposition to those in the ground bring about laid pipelines.
worden.
A. Schiemann, Bau und Betrieb elektrischer
Bahnen, 2. Aufl. 1898, S. 133). GisbertKapp
Various statements have been made in the literature on how to avoid these earth currents. Elihu Thomson had proposed to set up motor generators at various points in the network, which should bring the potential between rails and tubes to zero or below zero (see, among others, Schiemann, Bau und Betrieb Elektro Bahnen, 2nd ed. 1898, p. 133). GisbertKapp has given a simpler arrangement that largely achieves the set goal, by connecting various points of the track at a distance from the power plant with the power plant by special return lines and switching current collectors or dynamo machines into these lines in such a way that part of the rail currents are removed from the tracks and is forced to return to the power source through the insulated auxiliary lines. For each auxiliary line he has to arrange either two collector batteries or a dynamo and a motor (see Schiemann, p. 138, Figs. 159 and 160).
The present invention also aims to avoid vagabond currents, but in a different way than that indicated by Kapp, and makes do with simpler means. Different points distant from the power station are connected directly to one busbar of the power station by insulated cables, while a motor is switched on between the running rail and the busbar, so that part of the return current through the motor must take its way. The motor will then produce a counter electromotive force which, by suitable field excitation, can be made approximately equal to the voltage loss in the insulated cables. The mechanical energy supplied by the motor can be used in accordance with the respective operating conditions.
The arrangement is shown schematically in the accompanying drawing. D is the operating dynamo of the railway, AA is the working wire connected to one pole of the dynamo, S is the rail, K is an insulated cable leading to a distant point, and M is a motor, one pole of which is connected to the busbar and the other to the rail .
