Description
The usual production of carbamide molding compounds takes place in several stages. First, urea or melamine is reacted with aqueous formaldehyde solutions in heated or coolable agitator vessels. The resin solutions formed during the condensation are then intimately mixed with filler and kneaded. Mixing and kneading machines are used, which either work in batches or are set up for continuous throughput, such as kneading screws. The moist resin filler mixture is then subjected to drying in the third stage. Tray dryers, drum dryers, floor dryers or drum dryers are usually used for this operation. Depending on the drying process used, the masses are moved during drying or remain on the loading surface, as is the case with a tray dryer. In many cases drying is accelerated by passing or circulating air. Tray dryers and drum dryers are also known in which the moisture is removed using a vacuum.
In order to achieve a granulation or compaction, another one may be added Stage in which the dried material is plasticized on roller mills or in a press and is granulated. Since no great performance can be achieved when drying in tray dryers, procedures in a moving shift are preferred. However, with all of these latter methods it causes The very sticky nature of the material to be dried. Difficulties due to agglomeration and sticking to the walls of the dryer, creating a risk of overheating. Besides the poor flowability of the material is an obstacle to continuous transport.
The present process for the production of carbamide-formaldehyde molding compounds is intended to do the same Take difficulties into account. The method according to the invention consists in that Mixing, kneading and drying in a vacuum of the carbamide resin solution and filler Performs mass in one device at the same time.
und FüllstoffenThe drying process takes place in a heatable kneader, which can be evacuated to 99% vacuum. The resin solution, which is made in a condensation vessel from carbamides such as urea, thiourea, melamine, etc. and aqueous formaldehyde solutions or formaldehyde-releasing substances, reaches the kneader, where it is mixed with fillers such as cellulose, wood flour or inorganic fillers. The vacuum is adjusted to allow for the drying process of manufacture
of carbamide-formaldehyde molding compounds from aqueous carbamide resin solutions
and fillers

The end of the process is indicated by that a considerable amount of dust occurs in the kneader. The material becomes all the more fine-grained and drier, the longer it is treated in the kneader under vacuum.
It turns out, surprisingly, that despite the loosening by the resultant in a vacuum Water vapor an excellent mixing and homogenization is achieved. Apparently the complete wetting and penetration of the filler and its finest pores with the resin solution the removal of absorbed air and disruptive air cushions in a vacuum is particularly beneficial.
Furthermore, with this type of drying, all the difficulties that occur with other types of drying with moving goods, such as sticking, are eliminated the walls and agglomerations of the material. Due to the thorough kneading during drying new surfaces of the masses are constantly exposed and thereby the evaporation of moisture promoted. With other types of drying, namely in a tray dryer, the pieces remain in their shapes obtained, the moisture from the interior of the piece must first diffuse out before they can evaporate.
