The present invention relates to a low temperature process for the synthesis of ultrafine titanium dioxide particles in rutile phase by gas phase hydrolysis of titanium tetrachloride. More specifically, the present invention relates to a process for producing rutile-grade titanium dioxide powder using ethanol as a dopant to reduce the rutile-forming temperature to 150-400 ° C during calcination in a period of 1 to 4 hours. The process involves a novel combination of operations to economically produce ultrafine titanium dioxide powders in rutile phases in a flexible manufacturing process.
Hintergrund der ErfindungBackground of the invention
Titanium dioxide (titania) is widely used as a pigment, catalyst, inorganic membrane, semiconductor, optical coating reagent and photocatalyst in water purification processes. Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) occurs in two crystal structural phases of industrial importance, anatase and rutile. Titanium dioxide in anatase phase is used as a photocatalyst for the photochemical degradation of acetone, phenol or trichlorethylene, the oxidation, such as. Nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, and in a conversion system using solar energy because of its high photoactivity. Rutile phase titanium dioxide is widely used as a white pigment because it has a good scattering effect that protects against ultraviolet light. It is also used in optical coatings, light guides and antireflection coatings since it has a high dielectric constant and a high refractive index, good oil absorbing ability, tinting strength and chemical stability even under strong acidic or basic conditions. Titanium dioxide exhibits various electrical properties in accordance with the partial pressure of oxygen because it has a high chemical stability and a non-stoichiometric phase range. Therefore, it can also be used as a humidity sensor and as a high-temperature oxygen sensor.
Titanium dioxide powders for use as a pigment generally have an average particle size of 150 to 250 nanometers and are considered the essential white pigment for commerce. It has an exceptionally high refractive index, negligible color and is very inert. Titanium dioxide with smaller average particle size, eg. B. in the average particle size range of 10 to 100 nanometers, is used commercially in cosmetics and personal care products, plastics, surface coatings, self-cleaning surfaces and photovoltaic applications. Titanium dioxide of this quality is referred to as nano-sized ultrafine titanium dioxide or titanium dioxide. More than four million tonnes of titanium dioxide are produced annually; There are several processes for producing ultrafine titanium dioxide, some in commercial use and some in development. Some use anhydrous titanium dioxide, some use anhydrous titanium tetrachloride as the starting material. Another method uses a titanyl sulfate solution as a starting material.
In general, titanium dioxide powders are prepared by a chloride method, which is a gas phase method, or by a sulfate method, which is a liquid phase method.
In the chloride process commercialized by DuPont® of the USA in 1956, titanium tetrachloride is used as the starting material, and the reaction temperature must be higher than 1000 ° C. Due to the corrosive Cl 2 gas product at high temperatures in the process, this process also requires special protection devices, which leads to higher production costs. However, because titanium dioxide powders made by the chloride process are fine but coarse, additional equipment is required for providing an external electric field or controlling the reactant mixing ratios to control the particle shape and particle size of the titanium dioxide powders. High purity oxygen is required for the oxidation of TiCl 4 , resulting in high capital and operating costs.
In the sulfate process, which was commercialized by the company Titan ® from Norway in 1961, titanium sulfate (TiSO 4) is conventionally hydrolyzed at temperatures greater than 100 ° C, calcined at 800-1000 ° C and then pulverized to prepare titanium dioxide powder. During the calcination and pulverization process, impurities are introduced, resulting in a low quality of the final titania powder.
Funaki, K. and Saeki, Y. in: Kogyo Kagaku Zasshi, 59 (11), pp. 1291-1295 (1956) teach that anatase-type fine titanium dioxide particles can be obtained by mixing titanium tetrachloride and water in gas phase Temperature in the range of 200 ° C-800 ° C can be produced. Anatase-type fine titanium dioxide particles, which may contain a very small amount of rutile-type particles, can be produced by the reaction of titanium tetrachloride and water in the liquid phase, but to obtain rutile-phase titania is a much higher one Temperature needed.
Tang et al. (Synthesis of nanosized rutile TiO2powder at low temperature, Mater. Chem. Tang et al. (Synthesis of nanosized rutile TiO 2 powder at low temperature, Mater. Chem. Phys., 77 (2), pp. 314-317 (2003)) disclose the production of rutile TiO 2 powders in the nanometer size range by hydrolysis of Ti ( OC 4 H 9 ) 4 solution at 40-50 ° C. When the solution is neutral or basic, the hydrolysis product is a precipitate, and the dried precipitate is amorphous. Rutile phase TiO 2 can not be obtained even if the dried precipitate is calcined at 600 ° C. However, if the solution is acidic, the hydrolysis product is a colloidal solution from which rutile TiO 2 can be obtained by drying the gel at 40-50 ° C. However, strict control of reaction conditions is required because alkoxide is highly hydrolyzed in air. In addition, the high price of the alkoxide limits its commercialization.
Yang et al. (Preparation of rutile titania nanocrystals by liquid method at room temperature, Mater. Chem. Li et al. (A novel method for preparation of nanocrystalline rutile TiO2powders by liquid hydrolysis of TiCl4, J. Mater. Yang et al. (Preparation of rutile titania nanocrystals by liquid method at room temperature, Mater. Chem. Phys., 77 (2), pp. 501-506 (2003)) report that titania nanocrystals are in rutile form in the liquid phase at room temperature normal pressure. Li et al. (A novel method for preparation of nanocrystalline rutile TiO 2 powders by liquid hydrolysis of TiCl 4 , J. Mater. Chem., 12 (5), pp. 1387-1390 (2002)) report the preparation of nanocrystalline rutile TiO 2 with average crystal sizes of 6.9-10.5 nm by hydrolysis of aqueous TiCl 4 solutions at low temperatures. All the above-mentioned techniques for the synthesis of titanium dioxide in rutile phase are based on liquid-phase processes.
Compared to liquid phase routes, gas phase hydrolysis of titanium chloride has been reported for the synthesis of anatase. For example, Xia et al. (Low-temperature vapor-phase preparation of TiO 2 nanopowders, J. Mater. Sci., 34, p 3505-3511 (1999)) of the production of Anatas TiO 2 nanopowders by gas phase hydrolysis of TiCl 4 below 600 ° C. As an independent manufacturing route, he was not given much attention.
Compared to the liquid phase process, the gas phase process performed in an aerosol reactor offers many advantages including product purity, ease of collection, and energy efficiency, and a treatment such as, e.g. As the filtration, washing, drying, etc., including large volumes of liquid avoids. However, the chloride process is carried out at high temperatures and has many problems such. For example, the control of product properties, corrosion of the reactor material, design and operation problems, mainly due to high temperatures and the corrosive gases involved. Therefore, there is a need for a process for producing ultrafine titanium dioxide at a temperature greatly reduced from that commonly used in the chloride process, but which involves only gas phase processing without the involvement of liquids.

The present invention relates to a gas phase based aerosol synthesis of rutile phase titanium dioxide particles at a low temperature to avoid the numerous steps of treating large volumes of liquid and the need for high purity oxygen, such as in the chloride process. The present invention works successfully without high purity oxygen. The present invention successfully led to the development of a new titanium dioxide powder production process. In this method, it is possible to continuously rutile ultrafine titanium dioxide powder with excellent control of the particle properties, such as. As the particle shape, the particle size and specific crystallographic modifications to produce. This invention provides a low temperature, low cost, environmentally friendly, flexible process for producing titania powders.
Das hierin definierte Verfahren besteht aus vier Basisschritten gemäß den Merkmalen des Anspruchs 1.The present invention relates to a process for the synthesis of rutile phase titania powders by gas phase TiCl 4 hydrolysis followed by low temperature calcination. The method defined herein consists of four basic steps according to the features of
Hydrolyseschritthydrolysis
The TiCl 4 reactant is introduced into the reactor in gas phase. In this invention, the TiCl 4 gas may be generated by bubbling an inert gas through liquid TiCl 4, the nitrogen gas / TiCl 4 gas is passed preferably through the concentric Inconel ® ™ tube (a) of the reactor. The TiCl used in the process of the present invention 4 -Durchflussmengen are generally from about 10 cm 3 / min to about 200 cm 3 / min. This flow rate (along with the liquid TiCl 4 temperature) essentially defines the concentration of TiCl 4 present within the reactor. The TiCl 4 gas concentration ranges within the reactor useful in the present invention are from about 7 x 10 -4 mol / min to about 1 x 10 -2 mol / min. The heating of the TiCl 4 liquid, through which the nitrogen gas is injected, controls the actual concentration of TiCl 4 gas in the nitrogen gas. The higher the temperature used, the greater the TiCl 4 gas concentration achieved. In this regard, it is preferred that the TiCl 4 through which the nitrogen is injected has a temperature of from about 20 ° C to about 100 ° C.
The other required reactant used in the process of the present invention is water vapor. Water vapor is generated by blowing air through the water and the introduction of the gas (air with water vapor) into the reactor through the concentric Inconel ® ™ tube (b). This method allows precise control of the water vapor flow rate and concentration in the reactor. The flow rate of the air which contains water vapor, is generally from about 240 to 1500 cm 3 / min, preferably at about 500 to about 1000 cm 3 / min.
The reaction mixture used in the present invention includes a gas phase dopant that affects the physical properties of the titanium dioxide formed. The TiCl 4 reactant, water vapor and dopant are mixed in the reactor. It is preferred that the Dotiermitteldampf through the concentric Inconel ® ™ tube (c) is introduced. Aliphatic alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof may be used as dopants, with ethanol being preferred in the present invention. In selecting the amount of dopant used in the process, it is generally recommended to use molar concentrations of the dopant in the range of one to ten percent of the concentration of the water vapor.
Reaktionreaction
The size range of the particles formed as a result of the above reactions can be controlled by the reaction temperature and the molar ratio of H 2 O / TiCl 4 in the reactor.
Abscheiden von Titandioxidpartikeln aus der GasphaseSeparation of titanium dioxide particles from the gas phase
The formed TiO 2 particles are either amorphous or anatase-type and this powder is collected on a bag filter made of Teflon which is assisted by a vacuum pump. The filter bag is kept at a temperature in the range of 130 to 140 ° C to avoid condensation.
Kalzinierungcalcination
In contrast to the process of the present invention, the titanium dioxide powder in the amorphous phase resulting from the gas phase hydrolysis of titanium chloride without dopant is calcined at a temperature in the range of 300-600 ° C and for a period in the range of 1-4 h to obtain the rutile phase or mixtures thereof with the anatase phase. In the method according to the invention is in the presence of an organic gas phase dopant such. Ethanol, during gas phase hydrolysis reduces the rutile formation temperature to 150-400 ° C compared to other conventional calcination processes, and the calcination time is also significantly shortened to limit particle growth by sintering. Compared to the process of the present invention, in the absence of a dopant during the hydrolysis step, the calcination temperature for anatase to rutile conversion can vary between 800 ° C to 1100 ° C in gas phase hydrolysis. In the presence of a dopant, the conversion of anatase to rutile takes place during gas phase hydrolysis.

Dry nitrogen (99.9%) is bubbled through a gas washing bottle containing titanium tetrachloride (commercial grade), maintained at a temperature of 90 ° C and passed through the central tube of the Aerosol reactor out. The concentration of TiCl 4 in the gas stream is determined by recording the weight of TiCl 4 before and after each experiment. There is a constant N 2 -Durchflussmenge of 500 cm 3 / min through the gas wash bottle with the TiCl 4 liquid used. The corresponding molar flow rate of TiCl 4 is 1.7 × 10 -3 mol / min. Air is bubbled through a bubbler containing water (temperature = 90 ° C) and passed through the second tube of the nozzle manifold. The mass flow control (model 1259 B from MKS) controls exactly all streams into the reactor. The TiCl 4 gas and water vapor are rapidly mixed around the nozzle to form a TiO 2 aerosol at near atmospheric pressure. Titanium dioxide particles produced by the gas phase hydrolysis of TiCl 4 in the aerosol reactor are collected in a bag filter made of Teflon. The titanium dioxide powder is obtained directly as a dry powder for characterization. The exhaust gas is completely absorbed in a set of gas wash bottles. Parts of the produced powders were heat treated in a conventional muffle furnace. The powder was calcined at 800 ° C for 3 hours. A rotameter is used to measure the flow rate of the air.
molares Verhältnis von H2O/TiCl4 = 15TiO 2 is synthesized (without the use of dopants) in this comparative example using the following range of reaction conditions.
Temperature of the admitted gas flow = 70-80 ° C
Temperature of the exiting gas stream = 130-150 ° C
Flow rate of air = 1000 cm 3 / min (STP)
molar flow rate of TiCl 4 = 1.7 × 10 -3 mol / min
molar ratio of H 2 O / TiCl 4 = 15
The phase composition of the collected particles was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) in a Philips Holland Exper-Pro® diffractometer operating at 40 kV, 20 mA using CuK α radiation. The weight fractions of the rutile and anatase phases in the samples were determined from the relative intensity of the strongest peaks, the anatase tips (20 = 25.6 for the (101) reflection of anatase) and rutile peaks (20 = 27, 5 for the (110) reflection of rutile) calculated as described by Spurr, RA and Myers, H .: Quantitative Analysis of Anatase-Rutile Mixtures with an X-ray Diffractometer, Analytical Chemistry, 29, pp. 760-762 (1957). Using the reactor and the analytical methods of Example 1, the doped titanium dioxide was prepared as follows. The dopant ethanol, which was stored at room temperature (28 ° C) is introduced through the third concentric tube in the reactor. The TiCl 4 gas, water vapor and ethanol are rapidly mixed around the nozzle to form the TiO 2 aerosol at near atmospheric pressure. The molar concentration of ethanol is in the range of one to ten percent of the concentration of water vapor. Parts of the powder produced were heat-treated in a conventional oven. The powder was calcined at 500 ° C for 3 h.
- 1. Nano- and sub-micron-sized titanium dioxide particles in rutile phase could be synthesized at temperatures of less than 400 ° C by gas-phase reaction with TiCl 4 as a precursor.
- 2. The other reactants involved in the process are water and ethanol, which are low in cost and environmentally considered to be clean (green) chemicals.
- 3. The process consumes less energy than other available methods and includes negligible maintenance.
- 1. the energy for the cryogenic separation of high purity oxygen from the air,
- 2. the preheating of TiCl 4 and oxygen to 1200 ° C and
- 3. the loss of exothermic heat of reaction.
The process of the present invention does not require pure oxygen, and the maximum reaction temperature in the aerosol reactor can be set at 80 to 135 ° C. Thus, the reduced energy consumption is a consequence of the absence of the cryogenic oxygen separation energy requirements and a consequence of the preheat temperature of only 80-135 ° C. In addition, there is no need for heat exchangers because the TiCl 4 hydrolysis reaction has much lower exothermic heat of reaction (-20 kJ / mol at 150 ° C).
The important role that ethanol plays in reducing the amorphous precursor transition temperature to rutile is particularly evident in the amorphous precursor XRD. In particular, the XRD of the amorphous precursor, which is synthesized with ethanol as a dopant, contains rutile fingerprints with shallow and broad peaks that are typical of noncrystallinity. However, these features are absent in the amorphous precursor XRD, which are produced without ethanol. Without wishing to be bound by any theory, it is believed that the use of the organic dopant affects the nucleation process of the titania powder by creating a unique solid structure that can be converted to the rutile phase under mild calcination temperatures.
