Abstract
Description
The furnace consists of a tube that is supported and inclined on both sides. in the Crucible molded parts (cascades) are integrated inside the tube. The crucible shaped parts have openings on the bottom for the passage of the particles and are successively staggered. At one turn of the The particles move gently in the next tube, the one in the tube Flow direction of the crucible molding (cascade). The remaining floor area of the Crucible molding is just over 50%. It prevents that The particles slip through the axis of rotation and serve as a radiation shield. As a result, an optimal cross-mixing of the moved (circulated) Particles without mixing with the particles in the neighboring chambers (Cascades) guaranteed. It also creates a defined particle flow achieved along the entire furnace.
These are the most important requirements for the equalization of the desired core quality and to avoid cracking in the Particles in heat treatment.

Regardless of the fuel element shape, all fuel element types the fuel and brood in the form of coated particles (coated particles). The coated particles are about 0.5 mm in size Beads (fuel cores), preferably made of uranium oxide, and for Retention of the fission products generated during reactor operation coated several times with pyrocarbon and silicon carbide.
All high-temperature reactors currently in operation, under construction and in planning are currently being designed for the fuel cycle with low-enriched uranium. As a result, the fuel cores consist of uranium oxide (UO 2 ). The degree of enrichment of uranium isotope U-235 is about 10%, the rest, U-238, is used as breeding material.
To produce fuel elements that are in the High retention capacity for solid and gaseous Having fission products are high on the fuel cores Requirements: They have to be round, low Diameter deviations have an almost theoretical density own and be free of impurities and cracks.

For the production of fuel cores using the wet chemical process a number of methods have become known, essentially two, the Sol-gel process and the gel precipitation process ready for production were developed and thus acquired technical and economic importance.

The gel precipitation process was mainly used in Germany Manufacture of fuel elements for the AVR (joint venture Experimental reactor) and the THTR (thorium high-temperature reactor) developed.
In the 70s and 80s, this procedure was used overall Fuel cores made for about 1.2 million fuel balls what corresponds to about 12,000 kg cores.
In the production according to this method, a uranium nitrate solution with additions of organic auxiliaries for adjusting the viscosity and surface tension is dripped by vibration. In order to obtain cores of approximately 0.5 mm in diameter after sintering, the diameter of the dropletizing nozzles is approximately 4 mm. When droplets are formed, the ammonium diuranate (ADU) spherical particles are precipitated as a gel by reaction with NH 3 gas, then with the NH 4 OH solution. The particles are then washed free of NH 4 NO 3 with ammonia water, dewatered with isopropanol and dried at 80 ° C. under reduced pressure to recover the isopropanol. The dried particles are calcined in air at a maximum temperature of about 350 ° C and the ammonium diuranate (ADU) and the organic auxiliaries are thermally decomposed. The calcined particles are then reduced to UO 2 in an atmosphere consisting of hydrogen and inert gas and simultaneously sintered to the final density at a maximum temperature of approximately 1700 ° C.

About the production of fuel cores for high-temperature reactor fuel elements, Kerntechnik 18 , year 1976, No. 10.
With heat treatment (calcining, reducing and sintering) the Particles subject to high mechanical loads. Already during the calcination it is reduced the volume of the particles by about a factor of 2.5. There is also one internal pressure load as a result of the pressure build-up during the decomposition of Ammonium diuranate (ADU) and organic additives. The The stress on the particles continues during reduction and sintering continued. The volume of the particles is reduced by another Factor of about 4.5. In addition, the particles are additionally thermal stresses, which is particularly bad in a thermally conductive bed of resting particles is caused. When the bed is at rest, the particles pass through the lower one Layers, compared to the particles of the upper layers, one different temperature-time history. This applies in particular to the Particles that are in direct contact with the shell or boat material Come into contact. Consequently, it cannot be avoided that Finished sintered fuel cores occur and fluctuations in properties some particles break or a few sintered Fuel cores have latent cracks. This proportion is relatively small and is less than 0.1%. Because of the fuel elements for HTR Single circuit systems with a helium turbine have extremely high demands with regard to the Restraint for solid and gaseous fission products is provided this proportion of faulty fuel cores is not permitted. The core fragments of the Cracked particles can then be sieved and sorted largely separated. Nevertheless, a small, inadmissible remains Proportion of core fragments and cores with latent cracks. The share of Cores with latent cracks survive the coating process in Fluid bed systems are not and is mainly responsible for ensuring that the Layers of pyrocarbon and silicon carbide contaminated with uranium become. Furthermore, those that remain and are caused by whirling Core fragments coated irregularly. The two irregularities Contamination of the layers and irregular coating of the Core fragments reduce the retention capacity of the fuel elements for solid and gaseous fission products considerably.
The object of the invention is therefore a method for the production of To work out fuel cores that allow the formation of cracks, which lead to fragments or latent cracks during the heat treatment of the Particles (calcining, reducing and sintering) cause, fix and also an equalization of the desired core quality to reach.
The object is achieved in that the Heat treatment of the dried fuel particles for calcining, Reduce and sinter in a rotary kiln with integrated Crucible molded parts (cascades) are carried out. The oven consists of one on both sides stored and inclined pipe. There are molded crucible parts inside the tube (Cascades) integrated. The crucible shaped parts face the bottom Openings for the passage of the particles on and are successively staggered. With one revolution of the pipe the particles move gently in the next, in the direction of flow located crucible molding (cascade).
There is also a defined particle flow along the entire furnace achieved.
These are the most important requirements for the equalization of the desired core quality and to avoid cracking.
The calcining and reducing / sintering furnaces are of the same structure identical. They differ mainly from each other in terms of Max. Temperature and the furnace atmosphere. The calciner is for a max. 400 ° C and is flushed with air. Consequently, the outer tube and the crucible shaped parts can be made from the usual ones Stainless steels are made for use in air in this Temperature range are suitable.
Reduction and sintering take place together in a second furnace, which is used for a max. Temperature of 1700 ° C and a reducing atmosphere (mixture of H 2 and inert gas) is designed. Molybdenum or tungsten can be used as the material for the outer tube and the crucible shaped parts.
In order to clarify the invention, the process sequences and the important features of the method are described in more detail below. These are shown in the drawings ( Fig. 1 to Fig. 4).

The longitudinal section of a rotary kiln ( 10 ), shown schematically in Fig. 1, consists of an outer tube ( 12 ) with an inner lining ( 14 ), to which the fuel particles are fed by vibration via a storage container ( 16 A) and a feed tube ( 18 ).
The lining ( 14 ) is composed of molded crucible parts (cascades), which are provided with the reference symbol ( 16 ).
Details of the corresponding crucible shaped parts (cascades) ( 16 ) result from the illustrations in FIGS. 2 to 4.
Each crucible ( 16 ) is designed as a hollow cylindrical body with a peripheral wall ( 18 ), a partial bottom surface ( 20 ) and an opening ( 22 ).
The bottom surface ( 20 ) has a cutout ( 24 ) which extends to the side wall ( 18 ). This results in a notch in the bottom region ( 20 ) which is identified in FIG. 2 by the reference symbol ( 26 ).
The cutout ( 24 ) is less than 50% of the cross section of the crucible ( 16 ), so that the closed bottom region ( 20 ) extends over the central axis ( 28 ) of the crucible ( 16 ).
In order to line up the crucibles ( 16 ) arranged in the outer tube ( 12 ) and to form them as a unit in such a way that they cannot be rotated relative to one another, the abutting crucibles ( 16 ) interlock in the manner of a toothing. The notch ( 26 ) of the one crucible is matched to a corresponding notch in the end region of the subsequent crucible. A corresponding notching of the crucible ( 16 ) of FIGS. 2 to 4 has the reference symbol ( 30 ).
Furthermore, the notches ( 30 ) of the crucibles ( 16 ) are aligned with one another in such a way that the bottom surface ( 20 ) of the successive crucibles ( 16 ) are offset from one another, preferably by an angle which is in the range between 30 ° and 60 ° however at 45 °.
If the crucibles ( 16 ) are secured against twisting by the toothing, the crucibles ( 16 ), which form the lining ( 14 ) in the form of an inner tube, are secured against twisting with respect to the outer tube by an axial spring preload. This is shown by way of example in FIG. 1 (reference number 32 ). The outer tube ( 12 ) is also preferably also biased via spring elements ( 34 ) and ( 36 ) against a fixed bearing ( 38 ) or a floating bearing ( 40 ), in order to ensure that the outer tube ( 12 ) is independent to the extent necessary can be rotated by the occurring temperature-related expansions.
The particles fed to the rotary tube furnace ( 10 ) via the feed tube ( 18 ) are conveyed from the crucible ( 16 ) to the crucible ( 16 ) by rotating the outer tube ( 17 ) and thus by moving the inner tube ( 14 ).
At the outlet of the tube furnace ( 10 ) there is a collecting container ( 42 ) in which the calcined fuel particles or sintered fuel cores are collected.
