Description
The invention relates to a method for masking unwanted noises generated by a drive train of a vehicle using synthetic noises according to the type defined in more detail in the preamble of
Vehicles emit a variety of different noises during their operation. Some of these noises, for example a crisp engine or exhaust sound, are perceived as pleasant, whereas other noises such as rattling, rattling, humming or a grinding V-belt are perceived as unpleasant. In the case of electrified vehicles in particular, the noise emitted by the vehicle plays an important role in the comfort of using the vehicle and in the safety of road users. Because electrified vehicles are usually quieter than classic vehicles with combustion engines, they are often difficult to hear from other road users such as pedestrians. Methods and devices for generating synthetic vehicle noises are generally already known from the prior art, on the one hand to increase user comfort when operating such a vehicle by generating a particularly futuristic and pleasant engine sound and on the other hand to increase road safety, other road users are informed of the presence of the electrified vehicle due to a loud noise.
Typically, electric motors emit medium- and high-frequency vibrations, which are difficult to dampen with typical noise vibration harshness measures. The noises generated by the vibrations are in principle quiet, but can be clearly heard due to their tonality and the correlation of the pitch to the speed of the electric motor or to a vehicle speed.

The present invention is based on the object of specifying a further method for masking unwanted noises generated by a drive train of a vehicle, in which the unwanted noises are hardly perceptible and are therefore drowned out in a particularly comfortable manner.
According to the invention, this issue is solved by a method for masking unwanted noise generated by a drive train of a vehicle by synthetic noise having the features of
In a method for masking unwanted noise of the type mentioned at the outset, the unmodulated synthetic noise is modulated to set a desired sound characteristic by multiplication with a filter that is dependent on a vehicle parameter and an amplifier. According to the invention, a volume and/or a spectral width of the synthetic noise is changed as a function of a drive train speed and/or a magnitude of a load moment acting on the drive train, with the pitch of all acoustic signals making up the synthetic noise being kept constant .
A changing pitch is often unconsciously linked to machine behavior by people. With increasing power output from a combustion engine or electric motor, the torque generated by the engine also increases, as does its speed. As a result, a frequency of noise generated by the engine increases, which is accompanied by an increase in pitch of the noise. An artificial noise, the pitch of which correlates with a vehicle speed or with a drive train speed, can thus be used particularly favorably to set the acceleration behavior of a vehicle to music. The object of the invention, however, is to cover up unwanted drive train noise. In order to design this in such a way that the unwanted noise is as imperceptible as possible and is therefore particularly comfortably masked, the synthetic noise is designed in such a way that it corresponds to a noise present when a vehicle is used, the sound characteristics of which have no direct connection to engine performance. These are, for example, the sound of rushing headwind and/or the sound of a tire rolling on a surface. However, since the undesired noises emitted by the drive train when the vehicle is in use vary in their sound characteristics depending on driving parameters, the synthetic noise must also be adjusted in such a way that the undesired noises can be adequately masked in every situation. For this purpose, the volume and/or the spectral width of the synthetic noise is changed. For example, if the vehicle accelerates, the noises generated by the relative wind and the tires typically also become louder. In this way, the volume of the synthetic noise can also be increased as the powertrain speed increases. In this case, it is also possible for acoustic signals at different frequencies, comprised by the unwanted noises, to be particularly loud in different operating states. By adapting the spectral width of the synthetic noise, noises with different pitches that occur in different operating states of the drive train can thus also be covered. Because the pitch of the synthetic noise remains unchanged, it is perceived by people as being independent of an engine output, which means that the unwanted drive train noise can be masked in a particularly natural and comfortable way.
An advantageous development of the method provides that the unmodulated synthetic noise is generated by a broadband noise source. With the help of the broadband noise source, noises can be generated which include a large number of harmonic or disharmonic acoustic signals. A portion of the harmonic and/or discordant acoustic signals can vary, so that the synthetic noise also exclusively includes harmonic acoustic signals or discordant acoustic signals. In particular, a synthetic noise is generated by the broadband noise source, which corresponds to a noise that is directly independent of a drive train when a vehicle is in use. The unmodulated synthetic noise is filtered to produce the desired tonal characteristics. If the unmodulated synthetic noise generated by the broadband noise source includes a particularly large number of different frequencies, a large number of different desired sound characteristics can be generated particularly easily by filtering the unmodulated synthetic noise.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the method, the unmodulated synthetic noise includes, at least in part, those acoustic signals that are present in a noise that corresponds to wind noise and/or a tire rolling on a surface. A synthetic noise can thus be used to mask the undesired drive train noise, which noise corresponds to wind noise and/or a tire rolling on a roadway. A person perceives this as particularly natural, as a result of which the unwanted noises can be masked particularly conveniently. The unmodulated synthetic noise can be generated by sampling. The acoustic signals, which can be assigned to wind noise or a rolling tire, can be stored in a corresponding storage device included in the vehicle, but it is also possible, for example with the help of a microphone, to record ambient noises currently present when the vehicle is in use and use them to training of the unmodulated synthetic noise. For example, a microphone can be provided in the immediate vicinity of a vehicle tire and a microphone can be provided in the immediate vicinity of a vehicle exterior mirror, which record tire rolling noise and wind noise.
A further advantageous embodiment of the method also provides that at least two synthetic noises are generated and modulated for differentiated masking of multiple drive train noises, the synthetic noises being mixed together for output via loudspeakers included in the vehicle, or at least one of the synthetic noises on at least one separate loudspeaker is issued.
The synthetic noises can thus be output in a locally targeted manner on the vehicle, in particular in such a way that a respective synthetic noise, which is intended to cover a specific drive train noise, is output close to where the respective drive train noise arises, in order to mask it particularly effectively. If the vehicle has, for example, an electric motor connected to a front axle of the vehicle and attached to a front side of the vehicle, a loudspeaker can be provided in a vehicle interior, for example behind an infotainment display in a center console, which emits a synthetic noise that covers unwanted noises generated by the electric motor . The fact that the loudspeaker is arranged in a line to the electric motor between the electric motor and the vehicle occupants from the perspective of vehicle occupants means that the unwanted noise generated by the electric motor can be masked particularly reliably. It is possible that all loudspeakers arranged in the vehicle emit a synthetic noise, which is mixed together from a large number of synthetic noises, or it is possible that at least two of the loudspeakers emit a noise mixed together from at least two synthetic noises and at least one separate loudspeaker outputs a single synthetic noise. It is possible that the speakers outputting the mixed synthetic noise output a mixed synthetic noise which does not include the synthetic noise emitted via the separate speaker, or that the synthetic noise emitted via the separate speaker also includes some of the mixed synthetic noise is.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the method, the volume and/or the spectral width change continuously with the drive train speed and/or the load moment. This makes it possible to further improve comfort when covering up the unwanted noises. This is due to the fact that the drive train speed and/or the load torque change continuously during operation of the vehicle, which would be perceived as an unnatural masking of the unwanted noise if the volume and/or spectral width of the synthetic noise changed suddenly.
A relationship as to how much the volume and/or the spectral width is changed with the drive train speed and/or the load torque is preferably configurable. This allows the change in the sound characteristics of the synthetic noise to be adapted to different environmental conditions. Each vehicle has its own characteristic sound characteristics, due to the fact that each vehicle is different due to the materials used, components and position tolerances as well as the care taken in manufacturing. The sound characteristics of a vehicle also change in particular as the lifespan of a vehicle increases, for example due to wear and tear on mechanical parts. By configuring the relationship, how much the volume and/or the spectral width is changed with the drive train speed and/or the load torque, the synthetic noise to cover up the unwanted drive train noise can be adjusted in such a way that people can always perceive it in the same way in different situations is. This further increases the convenience when using the method.
In a vehicle with a computing unit, at least one sensor for detecting a vehicle parameter and at least one loudspeaker, a method described above for masking undesired drive train noises is used according to the invention. The vehicle can be any vehicle such as a car, a truck, a van, a bus and/or the like. With the help of the sensor, in particular, a drive train performance can be detected, which is composed of a drive train speed and a torque transmitted by the drive train people. One or more loudspeakers are particularly advantageously arranged in a vehicle interior and are aligned with one another in such a way that unwanted drive train noise can be particularly effectively covered up. In this case, the loudspeakers are each arranged in particular in a local proximity to a source at which the unwanted noises arise. Since all the devices required to carry out a method described above are often already included in a vehicle, a method according to the invention can be implemented particularly easily and cost-effectively. In order to carry out such a method, a program code, which is stored in a memory device comprised by the computing unit, is executed in particular on the computing unit. The program code can be transferred particularly easily to the memory device and can be adapted to different vehicles by varying digital parameters.
The vehicle is preferably an at least partially electrified vehicle. With classic combustion engines, unwanted drive train noise can be dampened using proven noise vibration harshness methods. This is particularly difficult in vehicles with an electric motor, which is why the method according to the invention can be used particularly advantageously here.
Further advantageous refinements of the method according to the invention and of the vehicle also result from the exemplary embodiments, which are described in more detail below with reference to the figures.
