Description
The invention relates to a method for detecting and compensating failed nozzles in an inkjet printing machine.
The invention is in the technical field of digital printing.
In the industrial printing industry, digital printing, especially in the form of inkjet printing, is becoming increasingly important. In the inkjet printing system, other problems with regard to ensuring the print quality are in the focus, as compared to the previously preferred offset printing. Of course, these inkjet-specific problems must be specifically taken into account in the context of automatic quality assurance. One main point concerns defects of individual print nozzles in the inkjet print head. These defective pressure nozzles generate a specific defect image which is characteristic of inkjet printing and are also known in the art as "missing nozzles".
The causes of such faulty pressure nozzles can be complex. One of the main causes is the drying of the printing nozzles when they are not used for a long period of time. The dried-up ink remains clogging the print nozzle, so that it can no longer print, only partially and / or with an oblique pressure point. Other sources of error include dust particles or other particles that clog the outlet of the pressure nozzle. Such affected printing nozzles cause characteristic artifacts in the printed image produced. So z. B. a completely failed printing nozzle in the case of monochrome printing at this point, where they can no longer contribute to the printed image on white printing substrate, a white line, therefore also called "white line" left. A pressure nozzle with an oblique pressure point, if it deviates too much, also causes a "white line". Here, however, it comes in addition to a so-called "dark line", namely at the point where the obliquely spraying pressure nozzle applies its ink. The color of the white line depends on the underlying print substrate. Colored printing substrate, z. As light green paper, of course, will cause a corresponding light green line. If you print multicolored at the location, this leads to a distortion of the color values. Although these are less clear in the final printed image, they are still easily recognizable to the human eye in most cases.
To remedy faulty pressure nozzles and to avoid corresponding white lines a variety of approaches are disclosed in the prior art. In addition to the provision of redundant pressure nozzles or printheads, it is z. For example, it is known to use printing nozzles of other printing inks that can print in the same place in order to simulate the missing color value of the failed printing nozzle as well as possible with a mixture of the remaining, available colors at this point. The missing color value will rarely be replicated one hundred percent, but even an approximation leads to a much better print image for the human eye.
In addition, the main approach to compensate for missing nozzles is to compensate for the failed or defective pressure nozzle by adjacent pressure nozzles, which carry out an increased ink application. The adjacent pressure nozzles bring so much more ink that the missing pressure nozzle between them as good as possible. In the case of only partially failed or skewed printing nozzles, the compensation by the adjacent pressure nozzles must be adjusted accordingly. As a rule, the respective pressure nozzles are completely turned off for practical reasons and then compensated as failed pressure nozzles by the adjacent nozzles. Always take care not to overcompensate, as this leads to a corresponding dark line, the "dark line" due to the excessive ink application.
However, in order to compensate for a faulty pressure nozzle, it first has to be detected. For this purpose, a multiplicity of methods are likewise disclosed in the prior art. The most common approach is to periodically print test patterns on the print substrate in which all print nozzles of all the printheads used each print at least one small test object. These test patterns can then be measured and evaluated, preferably automatically via an image capture system. If one of the image objects shows significant deviations, it can be deduced from the state of the corresponding pressure nozzle. Faulty pressure nozzles can thus be detected relatively reliably. The disadvantage of this approach, however, is that the test patterns differ in structure and overall nature from the actual print image to be produced. Therefore, it can not always be said whether a pressure nozzle, which is conspicuous in the test pattern, really a Bildartefakt, z. B. in the form of a white line caused. Depending on the evaluation criteria used for the generated image objects in the test pattern, often too few defective pressure nozzles are discovered by means of the pressure and the evaluation of the test patterns. On the other hand, if the criteria are too strict, too many false positive errors will often be detected and accordingly too many pressure nozzles will be marked as faulty. In addition, the need Test pattern space on the print substrate, which increases the waste. Also often, just for these reasons, printed on each sheet only a test pattern of a printing ink used, resulting in corresponding dead times to the discovery of a defective pressure nozzle.
However, these methods still have some disadvantages. So it is z. B. from the method by means of the column sum profile not possible to exclude artefacts caused by causes other than by missing nozzles, unerringly. In the method by moving the digital print image plus the opposite displacement of the print head is often a problem that the print head can not be moved against fast enough, or the displacement of the print head for permanent quality control is very complex.
The object of the present invention is therefore to disclose a method for detection with the following compensation of faulty pressure nozzles, which operates more efficiently than the methods known from the prior art.
This object is achieved by a method for detecting and compensating for defective printing nozzles in an inkjet printing machine by a computer at a print run greater than one, the steps at least one single printing a digitally printed image with the inkjet printing machine, at least one additional printing of the digital present Print image with an offset vertically to the printing direction, recording the printed print images by at least one image sensor, decomposing the recorded print images into individual color separations, column by pixel summation of the pixel values of the individual color separations, forming a difference signal of the column sum of the pixel values of the individual color separations of the recorded print images with and without offset vertical to the printing direction, detection of defective printing nozzles by peak analysis in the differential signal and switching off the detected defective pressure nozzles and compensation by adjacent nozzles includes. The method according to the invention thus combines the methods known from the prior art for displacing the printed image with the method for forming a column summation profile and further improves it. So z. For example, the formation of a difference signal of the column sum of the pixel values of the individual color separations of the recorded print images with and without shift offset vertically to the printing direction is much more efficient than merely matching individual column sum profiles with their digital ideal reference images alone. The exact peak analysis of hits found in the difference signal also brings about a further improvement of the method according to the invention over the methods known from the prior art, in which e.g. through the peak analysis other causes of error such. B. errors on the printing substrate, can be excluded. The disclosed method in this current form is designed for the printing of printed images in multiple edition. This is the normal case in a print job to be done. However, since inkjet printing also enables the special case of a print job with only a single run, this special case must also be taken into account. This will be discussed in more detail below.
Advantageous and therefore preferred developments of the method will become apparent from the accompanying dependent claims and from the description with the accompanying drawings.
A preferred development of the method according to the invention is that the disassembled, individual color separations of the recorded print images consist of components of the process colors CMYK used in the printing process and optionally further process colors, in particular OGV. The individual color separations consist of the individual process colors used in each case. These are usually CMYK and may include other process colors. In contrast to the method known from the prior art, where the column summation profiles of a printed and recorded print image are compared with that of a digitally present ideal reference image without errors, the column sum profile of the individual color separations is here in the inventive method compared with each other. This is a much more efficient design than in the prior art, since there the column sum profile consists of all color separations and can be distorted accordingly.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that the decomposition of the recorded print images into the individual color separations of the process inks CMYK and the further process inks takes place by means of a transformation matrix or by lookup in the ICC profile. Two methods are available for breaking up the recorded and digitized print images into the individual color separations. Which of the two is used must be decided by the user in the light of the prevailing circumstances. An automated decision in the light of existing criteria is also possible.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that the RGB values of the printed images recorded by the at least one image sensor are interpolated up to the image resolution of the printed printed image. Currently used image acquisition systems also have the problem that their resolution, with which they capture accordingly the generated print images, is lower than the print resolution of the inkjet printing machines used. Therefore, to achieve the image resolution of the printed image, the missing values in the RGB image generated by the image sensor must be interpolated.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that to check the detection and compensation result in at least one further iterative run of the method, the digitally printed image is printed at least once again with or without offset vertically to the printing direction and evaluated according to the method. In order to ensure that a faulty pressure nozzle was actually detected correctly, and that it was not perhaps responsible for another cause of the error for the corresponding artifact, which led to the detection of a faulty pressure nozzle, it is recommended to use at least one further iterative run to obtain the detection result to verify. One-time errors in detection can always happen, but a repeated error is far less common. This therefore rather indicates a systematic error possibly caused by errors in the implementation of the method according to the invention. Nevertheless, the further iterative run of the method leads to a massive improvement of the detection and thus of the following compensation result.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that in each case an adjacent pressure nozzle of the detected defective pressure nozzles is additionally switched off to check the detection and compensation result in at least one further iterative run of the method. Another setting criterion, which can be changed in a further iterative run, is the switching off of a respectively adjacent pressure nozzle of the detected defective pressure nozzle. This ensures that the correct pressure nozzle has actually been detected as being defective. This is often necessary because one of the weaknesses of the missing nozzles detection in the real printed image is that often a white line is correctly identified, but this z. B. is not assigned to the correct pressure nozzle due to the image resolution problem. By testing the respectively adjacent pressure nozzle for the detected defective pressure nozzle, such an error can be minimized, if not completely excluded.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that the at least one further printing of the printed image with an offset vertically to the printing direction only occurs for a color separation of the process colors CMYK used and the other process colors. Another option is to provide only a particular color separation with an offset by a digital shift of the print image. This considerably reduces the expense of the method according to the invention and is particularly useful when a certain color or print head responsible for that color is known to be particularly susceptible to missing nozzles.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that the method is used for a sheet-fed inkjet printing machine and the printed and recorded print images correspond to individual printed sheets. Although the method can be used for all types of inkjet printing presses, including web-fed web-fed inkjet printing presses, the preferred field of use is for a sheet-fed inkjet printing press in which the images to be generated and digitized by the imaging system Print images are printed on individual printed sheets.
Another solution to the problem posed is a method for detecting and compensating for defective printing nozzles in an inkjet printing machine by a computer at a print run equal to one, which comprises the following steps printing a digitally printed image with the inkjet printing machine, recording the printed images by at least an image sensor, disassemble the recorded print image and the digital print template in individual color separations, column summation of the pixel values of the individual color separations, formation of a difference signal of the column sum of the pixel values of the individual color separations of the recorded print image and the digital artwork, detection of defective pressure nozzles by peak analysis in the difference signal and turning off the Detected defective pressure nozzles and compensation by adjacent nozzles includes. This variant of the method according to the invention is specifically designed for print jobs with a circulation equal to one. It differs from the standard variant only in that not several versions of the printed image are printed here, including a shift of the printed image with an offset vertically to the printing direction, but only the print image is printed a single time and then the generated column sum profile with an available Column sum profile of the digital artwork is adjusted. This concerns, as in the standard variant, the individual color separations of the captured print image. Thus, the special cases of print jobs with a run of one on possible printing errors can be examined by missing nozzles.
