Description
The invention relates to an ion-conducting material for an electrochemical energy store and a method for producing the material and for producing electrodes comprising the material.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved ion-conducting material for an electrochemical energy store and to provide methods for the production of the material and for the production of electrodes comprising the material.
This object is achieved by a composite material according to claim 1 and the manufacturing method according to claims 10 and 11. Advantageous embodiments and developments of the invention result from the dependent claims.
According to the invention, a composite material suitable for an electrochemical energy store is proposed as the ion-conducting material, which comprises a sulfidic solid electrolyte material and a polymer soluble in a non-polar, aprotic solvent with a functional nitrile group or a copolymer soluble in a non-polar, aprotic solvent with a functional nitrile group comprises to bind the sulfide solid electrolyte material.
Such a composite material can be ideally used in an electrochemical energy store, in particular an ASSB based on Li-ion technology with sulfidic solid electrolyte as FSS. A polymer with a functional nitrile group or a copolymer with a functional nitrile group, which is soluble in a non-polar, aprotic solvent, is suitable, on the one hand, for processing together with the sulfidic solid electrolyte material; on the other hand, in the composite material it is a chemically very compatible partner for the binding of the sulfidic solid electrolyte material. An FSS based on this material shows improved mechanical properties compared to the pure solid electrolyte material, without the polymer or copolymer impairing the high ionic conductivity and low electrical conductivity of the sulfidic solid electrolyte material to a functional disadvantage. The composite material as FSS is flexible, i.e. reversibly bendable, and it can be cut and punched. On the other hand, compacted solid electrolyte material powder according to the prior art is brittle. The good binding property of the polymer or copolymer is achieved in particular by the nitrile groups, which ensure ion-ion and dipole interactions within the composite material, but which have a sufficiently good solubility for processing into the composite material. These interactions arise in particular between the nitrogen atoms of the polymer and the sulfur atoms of the solid electrolyte.
It is particularly advantageous if the polymer or copolymer which is soluble in a nonpolar, aprotic solvent and has a functional nitrile group is the compound acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) or the compound hydrogenated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (HBNR).
The choice of the polymer NBR, which is also known under the trade names such as Perbunan and - in its hydrogenated form - Therban, is surprising since the nitrile rubber NBR is used on an industrial scale, but not as a binder material. NBR is used as a “pure substance”, for example for seals, roller covers, hoses, conveyor belts and in special applications for oil drilling. NBR is not yet known in the context of use for batteries. NBR is suitable as a binder material for a sulfidic FSS because it has a high molecular weight and a nitrile group as a functional, polar, aprotic group having. This nitrile functionality allows a better connection to the solid electrolyte material due to ion-ion and dipole interactions. Since the nitrile group is small, no steric hindrance is introduced at the same time, which further improves the binding. The high molecular weight allows only a very small amount of NBR to be used in the FSS, which can both reduce costs and increase energy density. The small proportion also has the advantage that the ionic conductivity of the FSS is only slightly influenced. The rubber-like polymer material enables easy processing and quick dissolution in the solvent. The high adhesion to the particles of the solid electrolyte material as well as the carrier material enables the latter to be well wetted and, consequently, simple production of homogeneous layers. The FSS can be compressed very well by the soft polymer NBR and has a high mechanical stability.
The selection of HNBR is based on analogous considerations as for NBR. HNBR can also be used in an analogous manner to the use of NBR, so that NBR and HBNR can be regarded as identical in the context of this application.
According to another alternative, the compound styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) is used as the polymer or copolymer with a functional nitrile group which is soluble in a non-polar, aprotic solvent. Mixtures of polymers and / or copolymers, e.g. a mixture of NBR and SAN can be used.
The selection of SAN ((C 8 H 8 ) n - (C 3 H 3 N) m ) is surprising, since SAN is used on an industrial scale, but not as a binder material. SAN is used as a "pure substance" when transparent and rigid polymers are required. SAN have high strength and scratch resistance and are usually approved for food, which is why SAN is suitable, for example, as plastic tableware and is used in furniture construction. SAN is not known in the context of use for batteries. SAN is suitable as a binder material for a sulfidic FSS because it has a high molecular weight and a nitrile group as a functional, polar, aprotic group. This nitrile functionality allows a better connection to the solid electrolyte material due to ion-ion and dipole interactions. The high molecular weight allows only a very small proportion of SAN to be used in the FSS, which can both reduce costs and increase energy density. The small proportion also has the advantage that the ionic conductivity of the FSS is only slightly influenced. The high adhesion to the particles of the solid electrolyte material and the carrier material enables the latter to be well wetted and, consequently, simple production of homogeneous layers. The FSS can be compressed very well by the added polymer SAN and has a high mechanical stability.
It is particularly advantageous if the composite material is present in a composite material layer with a layer thickness of not more than 50 μm.
A layer thickness of no more than 50 µm is sufficient to fulfill the function as an electrolyte and as a separator in an ASSB. As the layer with up to 50 µm is quite thin and light compared to the press technology from the prior art, it is possible to provide an ASSB with a high volumetric and gravimetric energy density.
According to a further variant of the invention, a solid electrolyte electrode for an electrochemical energy store is proposed, which comprises a conductor foil and an active material layer applied to the conductor foil, a layer of the composite material being applied to the active material layer.
In this way, an electrode can be provided that is not only equipped with the respective active material, but also carries a solid electrolyte and separator. Such a solid electrolyte electrode is very easy to trade as a separate unit. If this electrode is used in an ASSB, an ASSB with a high volumetric and gravimetric energy density can be realized. A solid-state electrolyte electrode is therefore an electrode for an ASSB according to the prior art, to which an FSS layer according to the invention with a thickness of up to 50 μm is applied. The ion-conducting properties of the active material of such a solid electrolyte electrode therefore do not result from the applied FSS layer, since it contacts only a fraction of the particles of the active material in an ion-conducting manner, but rather through additions according to the prior art (common solid electrolyte materials such as sulfidic solid electrolyte materials or solid electrolyte materials) Garnet base as admixtures) to the active material (e.g. on the cathode side Li (NiCoMn) O 2 (NMC), LiCoO 2 (LCO) or LiNiCoAlO 2 (NCA) as well as on the anode side graphite and silicon as active material).
According to a further variant of the invention, a composite electrode for an electrochemical energy store is provided, the composite electrode comprising a conductor foil and an active material layer applied to the conductor foil, to which the composite material is admixed.
The composite electrode is therefore an electrode which is suitable as an electrode for an ASSB, since the composite material is mixed with the particles of the active material in the active material layer, so that the active material layer is given good ion-conducting properties. The particles of the active material are bound in an ion-conducting manner by the introduction of the composite material. The binder material does not interfere with the properties of the active material.
Furthermore, a solid electrolyte composite electrode for an electrochemical energy store is described, which has the features of the composite electrode and the solid electrolyte electrode, i.e. that the solid electrolyte composite electrode comprises a conductor foil and an active material layer applied to the conductor foil, to which the composite material is added, and that a layer of the composite material is additionally applied to this active material layer.
Another alternative of the invention provides that a layer of the composite material is surrounded by an electrochemical energy store and fulfills the function as an electrolyte and separator. Such an electrochemical energy store forms an ASSB with the advantage that the composite material is sufficiently functional even with a small layer thickness of not more than 50 μm and thus enables a high volumetric and gravimetric energy density of the ASSB.
- Provision of a non-polar, aprotic solvent,
- Provision of a polymer having a functional nitrile group or being soluble in the non-polar, aprotic solvent or a copolymer having a functional nitrile group being soluble in the non-polar, aprotic solvent,
- Provision of a sulfidic solid electrolyte material in a form which is dispersible in the non-polar, aprotic solvent,
- Provision of a carrier material,
- Dissolving the polymer or copolymer in the solvent into a binder solution,
- Dispersing the solid electrolyte material in the solvent to form a dispersion,
- Adding the binder solution to the dispersion with stirring to a binder dispersion,
- Coating of the carrier material with the binder dispersion,
- Drying of the carrier material coated with the binder dispersion,
- - Compacting the dried, coated carrier material.
The steps do not necessarily have to be in the order shown here. For example, n-decane or toluene are suitable as a non-polar, aprotic solvent. n-Dean has the advantage of better health tolerance compared to toluene. Both the polymer or copolymer is soluble in the solvent and the sulfidic solid electrolyte material is dispersible in the solvent. For this purpose, the solid electrolyte material is ideally provided as a powder. A siliconized, biaxially oriented polyester film, which is also known under the trade name Mylar film, is suitable as the carrier material. When using Mylar film, the dried binder dispersion adheres very homogeneously to the film as a carrier material, which is easily reversible. A calendering step in a doctor blade-over-roll system, in which coating, drying and calendering can be carried out in one system, is suitable for compacting, for example.
On an industrial scale, the layer of composite material obtained can be rolled as a web on the carrier material and easily handled. The layer of the composite material can be introduced as FSS on a large industrial scale in ASSBs, in that the web of the FSS on the carrier material and an electrode web which comprises a conductor material and an active material coated thereon are connected to one another in a roll-to-roll process. The carrier material can then be removed.
In a process that is less suitable on an industrial scale, the FSS carried by the carrier material could be pressed in a stacking process onto an electrode cut to the same format. The connection between the FSS and the electrode is then discontinuous.
- Providing an electrode comprising a conductor foil and an active material layer applied to the conductor foil,
- Provision of a non-polar, aprotic solvent,
- - Providing a polymer soluble in the non-polar, aprotic solvent a functional nitrile group or a copolymer soluble in the non-polar, aprotic solvent with a functional nitrile group,
- Provision of a sulfidic solid electrolyte material in a form which is dispersible in the non-polar, aprotic solvent,

- Coating the electrode with the binder dispersion,
- Drying the electrode coated with the binder dispersion,
- Densify the dried, coated electrode to obtain the solid electrolyte electrode.
The steps do not necessarily have to be in the order shown here; only each step must be covered by the procedure. The electrode is at best in the dried state before the binder dispersion is knife-coated onto the active material layer of the electrode. After drying, the electrode coated with the binder dispersion is compacted in a calender.
On an industrial scale, the electrode can be provided in the form of a web and, after calendering, can be cut into solid electrolyte electrodes.
Die Erfindung beruht auf den nachfolgend dargelegten Überlegungen:The invention is based on the considerations set out below:
All-solid-state batteries (ASSB) are secondary electrochemical energy stores in which an ion-conducting solid electrolyte is used. In lithium-ion technology, for example, this electrolyte replaces both the liquid electrolyte commonly used in the lithium-ion battery and the separator. So this takes on a double function. In order to obtain the highest possible ionic conductivity through the solid electrolyte separator layer (FSS), its porosity must be minimized. Furthermore, the best possible contact between the FSS and the anode and cathode is required in order to keep interface resistances for the ionic line as low as possible. According to the state of the art in this field, which is still small in scale, both have so far been achieved by compressing solid electrolyte material powder by means of a hydraulic press. This method can be successfully used on a laboratory scale; however, it cannot be used well on an industrial scale.
Hydraulic pressing of the solid electrolyte in powder form is a discontinuous process and is therefore disadvantageous on an industrial scale. Extremely high pressures are required, and the challenge then is to remove the compact from the pressing device without damage. This means that only very thick feet can be produced. The high thickness in turn has a negative impact on the energy density of the ASSB - with a simultaneous high material requirement and associated costs.
In addition, the FSSs, which are pressed with high pressure, are rigid and cannot be subjected to mechanical loads. Even small bumps on the electrodes can cause the FSS to break and thus pose a risk of a short circuit in the ASSB.
Diese Nachteile machen alternative Ansätze erforderlich. These disadvantages make alternative approaches necessary.
It is therefore proposed that a sulfidic solid electrolyte material, such as Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 (LSPS), be bonded with acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) or with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN). The binding of the solid electrolyte material in the material combination with, for example, acrylonitrile butadiene rubber makes it possible to produce the FSS in such a way that the solid electrolyte material is preferably dissolved together with the binder as a powder. A thin layer can then be produced using a doctor blade, which is then calendered in a further step. An FSS can thus be obtained which is thin and highly compressed, ie minimally porous. It is also advantageous that slurry-based methods are also used for the production of the electrodes in the production of lithium-ion cells. Therefore, a manufacturing process for the FSS, which is also slurry-based, is a process-related approach in battery industry production. Preferably n-decane or toluene is used as the solvent. n-Dean is a non-polar, aprotic organic solvent in which LSPS can be easily dispersed and the LSPS remains chemically stable. Toluene thus has comparable properties, but is harmful to health. protic Solvents such as water are out of the question because a sulfidic solid electrolyte material such as LSPS is decomposed in contact with such solvents.
The selection of a sulfidic FSS from LSPS is based on the fact that no high temperature conditions are required to process LSPS, i.e. the material can be compacted cold. It also has a very high ionic conductivity and sufficiently good electrical insulation properties.
However, NBR is suitable as a binder material for a sulfidic FSS because it has a high molecular weight and a nitrile group as a functional, polar, aprotic group.
The selection of the copolymer SAN ((C 8 H 8 ) n - (C 3 H 3 N) m ) is surprising, since SAN is used on an industrial scale, but not as a binder material.
The binder polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), which is widely used in the production of lithium-ion batteries, and which is used in the manufacture of electrodes, is unsuitable for binding sulfidic solid electrolyte material, since PVDF and LSPS have such different solubility properties that slurry-based processing of PVDF and LSPS is not possible.
The manufacturing process therefore has particularly large industrial advantages, since it is a continuous process. The FSS can be knife-coated and calendered with conventional coating systems, such as a doctor blade-over-roll system. This enables rapid production with short throughput times and the associated cost advantages with optimum thickness and porosity. The FSS can be manufactured free-standing or applied directly to a cathode or anode tape.
The slurry-based processing enables thin layer thicknesses of the FSS of up to 50 µm. Hydraulic pressing leads to layer thicknesses that are up to 10 - 20 times higher. Excess material is therefore not used, which causes costs and increases the energy density of an ASSB with a certain format, since the FSS can be designed to be minimally thick in order to conduct ions and electrically isolate the electrodes from one another.
By using the binder, the FSS is also more flexible than a pressed FSS without a binder. As a result, it is also mechanically stronger, which, for example, facilitates installation in the battery cell or enables better adaptation to changes in volume during the cyclization of the ASSB. This has a positive effect on the longest possible lifespan of the ASSB.
