Description
The invention relates to a method for displaying information in a head-up display (HUD) of a vehicle, in particular of information projected into the windshield of a motor vehicle. The invention further relates to a display system with a HUD and a set up for carrying out the method of the invention control unit and a motor vehicle with the display system according to the invention.
Head-Up Displays (HUD) are display systems that have been used for decades in aviation and are increasingly used in motor vehicles. The term head-up display is derived from the special feature of these display systems to project a display content into the field of view of a user. He therefore does not have to adjust his head posture or his line of sight, for example, to lower ("head-down") in order to perceive the display contents. The aim is to enable the user to direct his field of vision without interruption to an area in front of the aircraft or vehicle. Typically, HUDs are based on the projection of display content onto a user-facing transparent screen, such as the windshield of a vehicle.
In conventional display means, such as screens arranged in the dashboard of a vehicle, the user can not perceive the events occurring in front of the vehicle briefly when looking at the display means. Thus, there is always the possibility that the response time of the user is so prolonged that it can not react in time to potentially dangerous events. While the user of HUDs can focus his gaze continuously on an area in front of the vehicle, there is a danger that display content may obscure or at least diminish the visibility of events occurring in front of the vehicle. HUDs therefore always ask the question of the most appropriate presentation of content, for example with regard to the positioning of the content as well as the transparency or the duration of its presentation.
Various methods for displaying display contents on vehicle head-up displays are already known from the prior art.

The method known from the prior art has in common that a representation of information directly in the direction of the driver is generally regarded as positive. The danger of obscuring traffic events that are relevant for the driver is therefore given too little attention. However, an arrangement far out of sight of the driver makes the application of a HUD altogether obsolete and thus also not considered.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for displaying information in a head-up display of a vehicle that overcomes the disadvantages of the prior art and enables optimum visibility of both the displayed information and the environment of the vehicle.
The object is achieved by a method for displaying information, a display system and a vehicle according to the respective independent patent claims. Preferred developments are the subject of the respective dependent claims.
The method according to the invention for displaying information in a head-up display, HUD, of a vehicle has at least the following method steps. In a first step, a fixation area of a driver of the vehicle is determined. Fixation area in the context of this patent application refers to an area to which or by which a driver defaults a focus of his / her attention while driving. In other words, one or more main directions of the driver during the journey are within the time average within the fixation area or the fixation area is defined by these main directions of sight. The fixation area is the area of the environment in which the driver, while driving, mainly looks or the part of a projection area of a HUD (windshield) through which the driver mainly looks while driving.
The existence of such a fixation range of vehicle drivers is proven by empirical studies, for example, the publication by Lappi et al. (2017) Systematic Observation of an Expert Driver's Gaze Strategy-An On-Road Case Study. Front. Psychol. 8: 620. doi: 10.3389 / fpsyg.2017.00620, the contents of which are hereby fully incorporated by reference. Various ways of determining the fixation area are described below with reference to preferred embodiments of the method. In the method according to the invention, the fixation area is preferably constant and, in particular, does not vary with each change of a line of sight of the driver.
In a further step of the method according to the invention, a projection area of the HUD is segmented into individual display areas as a function of the distance to the fixation area. In particular, the projection area minus the fixation area is segmented. Alternatively, preferably, the projection surface of the HUD is defined as a function of the distance to an image of the fixation region on the projection surface of the HUD. The projection surface refers to the entire surface of a transparent screen or the windscreen in which a representation of information by means of HUD is possible in principle. Due to the constant fixation region, the distances to this and thus the position of the different display regions are constant in the method according to the invention.
In particular, the projection surface of the HUD is segmented at least into a first display area and into a second display area, wherein the second display area is different from the first display area and wherein the first display area has a greater distance from the fixation area than the second display area. Preferably, the display areas are exclusive, non-overlapping areas. The fixation region is preferably part of the projection surface; alternatively, an image of the fixation region on the projection surface can be used for distance determination. The distances in this case preferably relate to a minimum distance between the regions, that is to say to the smallest distance between a point of the fixation region and a point of one of the display regions. Alternatively preferably, the distances relate to centroids of the regions.
Within the scope of the present invention, each display area is suitable for presenting information by projections of the HUD. In particular, in the method according to the invention, first information is displayed in the first display area and second information is displayed in the second display area, the second information being different from the first information. Consequently, in the method according to the invention, different information is specifically allocated to different distances from the fixation area. Furthermore, a classification of the various information presented is preferably carried out and an order of the information resulting from the classification is mapped to a metric with respect to the fixation area.
In the context of the present invention, there is not necessarily a projection of information onto the projection surface, in the sense that the information is displayed on the projection surface and can be observed, for example, from different angles. Rather, a projection of information by means of the HUD on the projection surface in a field of view of the driver. In this case, the projection surface primarily serves to reflect the projected information into the field of vision of the driver. Due to the transparency of the screen or the windshield, this reflection is like a semi-transparent mirror. Thus, the driver may perceive the information projected by the HUD superimposed as the environment behind the windshield. Preferably, there is a virtual pixel of the projected information in this environment.
It is known that the intensity of the conscious perception of information decreases with increasing distance from a foveal visual field, that is, the area of sharp vision. Outside of this foveal visual field, ie in the area of peripheral vision, perceived information content is processed more unconsciously. At the same time, the sampling frequency, ie the temporal resolution, is significantly higher in the area of peripheral vision than in the foveal field of view. Thus, despite the less conscious perception, sensations of peripherally-perceived sensation can be adequately responded, provided that the mental activity for the particular reaction does not exceed a certain amount of cognitive effort. This psychological knowledge is implemented in the present method for displaying information in such a way that a targeted selection is made, which information contents are to be displayed at which distance to a fixation area of a vehicle driver. Thus, a driver's cognitive load is minimized and its driving experience is improved.
In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the fixation area overlaps the projection area of the HUD. In other words, the fixation area is arranged within the projection area, that is to say the area available in principle for displaying display contents. According to this embodiment of the method according to the invention, the fixation area is preferably kept free from projections of the HUD. In other words, a display of display contents does not take place in the fixation area. This may mean that a virtual pixel of information projected into the driver's field of vision is not located within the fixation area. Since contents shown in the fixation area are almost inevitably consciously perceived by the driver, this embodiment advantageously makes it possible for the driver to concentrate distraction-free on the environment, in particular on the fixation area. Thus the driving safety and the personal driving experience are further improved.
Also preferably, the projection surface is arranged on at least part of a windshield of the vehicle. Particularly preferably, the projection surface extends almost completely from a lower edge of the windshield to an upper edge of the windshield. Areas of the windshield, behind which the windshield wipers or on which tinting strips are located, are preferably excluded from the projection surface. Also preferably, the projection area extends over the entire width of the windshield or at least on a front of the driver area of the windshield.
Further preferably, the fixation region, in particular an image of the fixation region on the windshield of a vehicle, is formed by a set of intersections between frequently occurring viewing directions of a driver and a windshield of the vehicle. Also preferably, the viewing direction of the driver is at least temporarily detected or determined based on at least temporarily acquired measurement data. The person skilled in the art for this purpose a variety of techniques for so-called "eye-tracking" (oculography) are known. For this purpose, camera-based techniques and, for example, cameras mounted in the rear-view mirror are particularly preferably used. Advantageously, the intersections with the plane of the windshield and thus the fixation area can be determined mathematically on the basis of the parameterized viewing directions of the driver. Particularly preferably, the fixation area is trained only once, for example when starting the vehicle or when selecting a new driver, and then remains unchangeable.
Alternatively, a main line of sight of the driver is estimated on the basis of other measured data, for example based on a seat adjustment of the driver. In addition, other data, such as an input of the driver's height, may be used to estimate the viewing direction. Particular preference is given to using further information, for example relating to the usual position of an area located outside the vehicle and mainly viewed by the driver, for example as position information relative to the vehicle, for determining a fixation area of the driver.
Further preferably, the fixation region has a width corresponding to a projection of a cutting line between a traffic lane traveled by the vehicle and a horizon line, in particular a horizon line perceived by the driver of the vehicle. The projection of this section line is preferably carried out approximately along a viewing direction of the driver and on the windshield of the vehicle. According to this embodiment, the fixation area can also be determined by means of a camera located in or on the vehicle and by mapping the environment surrounding the vehicle. Furthermore, the vertical height of the fixation region is preferably smaller than its horizontal width.
Since the fixation area is preferably a projection of a more distant road area at the level of the horizon along the driver's line of sight onto the windshield of the vehicle, the fixation area is preferably arranged in an upper third of the projection area and possibly in the upper third of a windshield of the vehicle , In a particularly simple embodiment of the method according to the invention, the fixation area is determined only during the development of the vehicle as a variable standardized for this vehicle. Such a standardized fixation area can be stored in the control unit of the vehicle.
IEEE Trans. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the distance metric of the display areas in the projection area, which relates to the fixation area, is linked to a psychological driving behavior model. The driving behavior model is preferably an adaptation of the "three-level model" to driving a vehicle. The "three-level model" is described in the paper by Jens Rasmussen: Skills, rules, and knowledge; signals, signs, and symbols, and other distinctions in human performance models. IEEE Trans. Systems, Man, Cybernetics, SMC-13 (1983), pp. 257-266, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference.
Das „Drei-Ebenen-Modell“ unterscheidet insbesondere zwischen (a) auf sensomotorischen Fertigkeiten basiertem Verhalten (skill based), (b) regelbasiertem Verhalten (rule based), und (c) wissensbasiertem Verhalten (knowledge based). In particular, the "three-level model" distinguishes between (a) sensory-based (skill-based) behavior, (b) rule-based behavior, and (c) knowledge-based behavior. The craft-based behavior (a) is based primarily on stimulus-response automatisms, rule-based behavior (b) primarily on a repertoire of associative behaviors, and knowledge-based behavior (c) on conscious decision-making and planning.
An adaptation of this "three-level model" to the driving task was already carried out by Donges in 1982 (see for example the textbook by Hermann Winner, Stephan Hakuli and Gabriele Wolf: "Handbuch Fahrerassistenzsysteme: Grundlagen, Komponenten und Systeme für aktiv Sicherheit und Komfort"; Springer-Verlag, 2011, pages 15 to 18, to which full reference is hereby made). Accordingly, in the driving task, the navigation task, comprising the decision on route and time course, the knowledge-based behavior (c), the guidance of the vehicle, comprising deriving reference variables such as target track and target speed based on the destination and current environment, the rule-based behavior (b ), and stabilizing the vehicle, comprising smaller steering and acceleration operations for adjusting actual lane and actual speed to the desired values, associated with the craft-based behavior (c).
The application of this model based on the "three-level model" model of the driving task according to Donges in the method according to the invention leads to a particularly preferred information distribution as a function of the distance to the fixation area. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the first display area is arranged in a region of the peripheral vision of a driver of the vehicle. Further preferably, the first information for stabilizing the vehicle serving information. The stabilization information is particularly preferably content for limiting the lane if, for example, side lane edges are not visible or absent in the dark or in the wet. For this purpose, the lane edges are preferably detected by means of vehicle sensors or read from map material. Likewise preferably, the information used for the stabilization is an indication of the actual speed if, for example, it exceeds a permissible speed. For this purpose, speed limits are preferably read by means of vehicle sensors and compared with the actual speed. Particularly preferably, the first information is shown as graphical warning elements. Particularly preferably, the first information is displayed in the form of an augmentation, that is to say in superposition with the environment actually perceived by the driver.
Also preferably, the second display area is arranged between the first display area and the fixation area. Particularly preferably, both the first and the second display area are arranged below the fixation area. The second information is preferably information used to guide the path of the vehicle. The second information thus preferably relates to the next driving maneuver, that is, for example, a lane change, a turn or a turn. Particularly preferably, the second information is displayed in the form of an augmentation, that is to say in superposition with the environment actually perceived by the driver. In an exemplary implementation, the second information is a directional arrow that is projected into the HUD so as to superimpose a currently traveled lane. Preferably, this arrow is generated by comparing a GPS position of the vehicle with map material.
The application of the model of the driving task according to Donges in the method according to the invention also results in the further segmentation of the projection surface at least into a third display area. In this case, the third display area is different from the first display area and the second display area and has a smaller distance to the fixation area than the first display area. Preferably, the third display area also has a smaller distance to the fixation area than the second display area. In the third display area, third information different from the first information and the second information is displayed.
In a preferred embodiment, the third display area is arranged above the fixation area or between the second display area and the fixation area. Furthermore, the third information is preferably information used to navigate the vehicle. Thus, the display of navigation data is advantageously close to the horizon, where they can be read by the driver and deliberately processed. The third information may include, for example, an indication of the destination, a distance to the destination and a direction to the destination. The data to the destination preferably corresponds to an input in a navigation system of the vehicle or are read out of this.
In summary, linking the model of the driving task to donges with the findings on the fixation area of a driver means that in the method according to the invention different information contents are preferably displayed in an associated display area such that the cognitive effort for processing the information displayed in a specific display area is reversed proportional to the distance of this display area from the fixation area. In other words, the more conscious perception and processing require certain information, the closer this information will be displayed according to the invention at the fixation area of the driver.
In a further preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, a fourth display area for displaying fourth information without reference to the driving task is at least temporarily displayed along a lower edge of the projection area. Also preferably, the fourth display area is displayed with the greatest possible distance to the fixation area in the projection screen. Particularly preferably, the fourth display area is displayed only temporarily. In other words, the display of the fourth display area is only for a predetermined time, for example, after an input of the driver or after a certain period of time. According to this embodiment, the fourth display area may overlay another display area, more preferably the first display area. The fourth information without reference to the driving task are therefore less weighted or classified according to the invention than all the information related to the driving task. The fourth information is different from the first, second and third information, more preferably it is infotainment information.
The method steps of the method according to the invention can be implemented by electrical or electronic components or components (hardware), by firmware (ASIC) or by implementing a suitable program (software). Also preferably, the inventive method is realized or implemented by a combination of hardware, firmware and / or software. For example, individual components for carrying out individual method steps are designed as a separate integrated circuit or arranged on a common integrated circuit. Individual components configured to perform individual process steps are also preferably disposed on a flexible printed circuit board, a printed circuit board (PCB), a tape carrier package (TCP), or other suitable substrate.
The individual method steps of the method according to the invention are furthermore preferably designed as one or more processes that run on one or more processors in one or more electronic computing devices and are generated when one or more computer programs are executed. The computing devices are preferably designed to cooperate with other components, such as a projector of the HUD and one or more sensors or cameras to realize the functionalities described herein. The instructions of the computer programs are preferably stored in a memory, such as a RAM element. However, the computer programs may also be stored in a non-volatile storage medium such as a CD-ROM, a flash memory, or the like.
It will be further appreciated by those skilled in the art that the functionalities of multiple computers (computing devices) may be combined or combined in a single device, or that functionality may be distributed from a particular computing device to a plurality of devices to perform the steps of the method of the present invention to deviate from the method according to the invention.
Another object of the invention relates to a display system for a vehicle having a head-up display, HUD, arranged for projecting information onto a windshield of the vehicle. Suitable HUDs are known to those skilled in the art. A projection surface of the HUD preferably extends over the entire windshield, more preferably over almost the entire height of the windshield and also preferably over a section of the windshield in front of the driver. The display system according to the invention also has a method for carrying out the method according to the invention set up control device. This may be a control unit exclusively assigned to the display system or a control unit of a vehicle in which the display system is arranged.
Likewise subject of the invention is a vehicle with a display system according to the invention. In the vehicle, the inventive method, as described above, thus carried out. Display contents are shown in such a manner in the display areas of a segmented projection screen (windscreen) that the distance of the display contents to a fixation area of the driver is lower, the more conscious perception the processing of the displayed display contents requires. The display contents are thus subdivided into exclusive, non-identical information, at least in first information and second information (other than the first information) stored in exclusive, non-overlapping display areas, at least in a first display area and in a second display area (different from the first display area) first display area).
Further preferred embodiments of the invention will become apparent from the remaining, mentioned in the dependent claims characteristics.
