The particle filter according to the invention for an internal combustion engine, comprises a filter body formed from filter material, which has a plurality of channels, wherein a size of the particle filter channels for the purpose of damping acoustic waves is different.
According to the invention, a size is understood to mean any value describing an outer dimension of the particle filter channel. By varying the size of the particulate filter channel, a damping effect on a certain frequency of acoustic waves can be achieved. As a result, the particle filter can also be optimized with regard to acoustic damping. Particularly preferred frequencies are attenuated between 200-2000 Hz. In particular, different frequencies or a smaller frequency band can be attenuated within this range. The damping effect achieved by the invention is particularly preferably in the range of 5-50 dB. The attenuation values can assume any value within this range.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the particle filter channels have different sized cross sections. Due to the different sized cross sections of the flow resistance of the particulate filter can be adjusted. As a result, the filter performance and the attenuation of the acoustic waves can be changed, so that the particle filter can be optimally adjusted to the frequencies to be damped and the filter performance. In this case, a cross-sectional difference between the large and the small cross sections of the particle filter channels of more than 10% is considered to be particularly preferred.
In a further preferred embodiment, the particle filter channels have different lengths. A length is understood to be the axial extent of a closed particle filter channel. As a result, a damping effect can be influenced by way of a further embodiment of the particle filter channels, so that a further design possibility for damping acoustic waves is provided. A particularly preferred length difference is considered to be at least 10%.
The particle filter channels preferably have variable cross sections over the length. This means that the cross-sectional area, the cross-sectional shape or both changes. Thereby, the filter characteristic of the particulate filter and the damping property can be adjusted and optimized.
Advantageously, a porosity of the particulate filter is adapted to the desired filter properties. The particle filter can be optimally designed in terms of damping and filtering.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a region of channels having smaller cross sections is surrounded by a region of channels having larger cross sections. As a result, the different flow velocity in the edge regions and in the inner region of the particle filter can be taken into account, so that damping can also be adapted with regard to the flow velocity. Particularly preferably, the difference between an area in the edge area and an area in the inner area of the particulate filter is at least 10%.
Also in this embodiment, the damping is adjusted in terms of flow velocity. Particularly preferably, the difference between a surface with smaller cross sections and a surface with larger cross sections of the particulate filter is at least 10%.
A range of smaller length channels is preferably surrounded by a range of larger length channels. As a result, the different flow velocity in the edge regions and in the inner region of the particle filter can be taken into account. In addition, this filter effect and damping can be optimized accordingly. More preferably, the longer length channels are at least 10% longer than the smaller length channels.
Alternatively, a range of longer length channels is surrounded by a range of smaller length channels. Here, again with regard to the flow velocity of the particulate filter with respect to the filter effect and the damping is adjusted. More preferably, the longer length channels are at least 10% longer than the smaller length channels.
Advantageously, at least one island-shaped region is arranged, whose particle filter channels have a different cross section to the particle filter channels surrounding this region and / or have a different length. As a result, the particle filter can be adapted even more precisely to the flow profiles prevailing in the particle filter in order to achieve better acoustic damping.
