The object of the present invention is to improve an internal combustion engine of the type mentioned at the outset.
This object is achieved by an internal combustion engine with the features of claim 1. Advantageous refinements with expedient developments of the invention are specified in the remaining claims.
In order to improve an internal combustion engine of the type specified in the preamble of claim 1, it is provided according to the invention that the active pump and at least one passive separating element for separating oil from the blow-by gas form a structural unit. In other words, it is provided according to the invention that the passive separating element, which is also referred to as a passive oil separating unit, and the pump, which functions or operates, for example, as a vacuum pump, are combined in one component in the form of the structural unit, so that the structural unit forms or comprises both the pump and the separating element . In other words, the pump is integrated in the separating element or vice versa. Due to the fact that the pump and the separating element form the structural unit, the pump and the separating element can be handled and thus, for example, during the manufacture of the internal combustion engine jointly and at the same time, and thus assembled, in particular by handling or assembling the structural unit. The separating element is provided in addition to the pump itself, so that the separating element can be used to selectively separate or separate oil from the blow-by gas if the blow-by gas is actively and thus specifically conveyed by means of the pump. In particular, it can be provided that the pump and the separating element are arranged in a common housing and are mechanically connected to one another, so that the pump and the structural unit are components which can be moved simultaneously or together and thus handled.
The structural unit is arranged, for example, in the ventilation line and the blow-by gas can flow through it, the separating element per se being arranged upstream of the pump. The pump is preferably an electric pump or an electrically operated pump. The pump thus comprises a conveying element for conveying the blow-by gas and an electric motor, by means of which the conveying element can be driven or driven to convey the blow-by gas.
The internal combustion engine has, for example, a cylinder housing through which the combustion chamber is at least partially limited. In a cylinder formed by the cylinder housing, a piston is accommodated in a translationally movable manner, the piston at least partially delimiting or forming the combustion chamber. The active pump is a pump that is provided in addition to the piston or piston of the internal combustion engine, so that it is not the internal combustion engine itself that is the pump for conveying the blow-by gas, but the pump is an active pump that is provided in addition to the internal combustion engine Pump, by means of which the blow-by gas and the air can be conveyed as purge air, in particular independently of a pressure prevailing in the intake tract.
Overall, in the internal combustion engine according to the invention, the implementation of a particularly advantageous crankcase ventilation system can be implemented, by means of which the crankcase can be ventilated and vented particularly advantageously. It has proven to be particularly advantageous if the internal combustion engine is a supercharged internal combustion engine is formed and thus has at least one exhaust gas turbocharger, by means of which the combustion chamber can be supplied with compressed air. The pump is, for example, an active vacuum pump, by means of which the blow-by gas can advantageously be conveyed. The separating element can act as a passive oil separator in particular.
The invention can be used in particular in the course of a hybridization of a supercharged internal combustion engine, in order to be able to keep fuel input in the oil for lubricating the internal combustion engine particularly low. The invention is based in particular on the knowledge that repeated short-term operation of an internal combustion engine, also referred to as an internal combustion engine, can result in a high fuel input into the oil, also referred to as engine oil, in a hybrid application. This leads to an oil dilution. Typically, the fuel input cannot be prevented, since there is little to no ventilation of the crankcase with fresh air in a hybrid driving mode. This can lead to component wear due to poor lubrication or even component failure. Problems can also arise in the engine application if large quantities of fuel evaporate from the oil when the internal combustion engine, which is also referred to as the engine, is warmed up and are discharged into a clean air line of the intake tract via a crankcase ventilation.
The aforementioned problems and disadvantages can be avoided in the internal combustion engine according to the invention, since permanent ventilation of the crankcase can be achieved by the active pump. This prevents excessive fuel entry into the oil. Permanent ventilation is understood to mean that the crankcase can be flushed with fresh air from the intake tract at least almost permanently by conveying air as fresh air from the intake tract into the crankcase via the ventilation line by means of the pump. This can be carried out by means of the pump in at least almost every operating point of the engine map of the internal combustion engine. For this purpose, the pump functions as a vacuum source which is independent of an intake tract and is also referred to as intake manifold pressure and by means of which the air can advantageously be conveyed as fresh air from the intake tract into the crankcase. According to the invention, the pump is combined with the separating element. The assembly thus acts as an active oil separator. Due to their geometrical dimensions, active oil separators cannot usually be integrated into every installation space, but this can now be implemented in the internal combustion engine according to the invention. Especially with existing engine projects that are to be hybridized, the integration of active oil separators creates major problems in construction and space planning. According to the invention, as a preliminary stage of an active oil separator, the pump, which is designed, for example, as an electric pump, is combined with the separating element, for example, as an oil separating element, as a result of which the structural unit can advantageously be integrated into an existing installation space.

The requirements for the development of an internal combustion engine are becoming increasingly complex. On the one hand, this affects the buyer's market demand for low fuel consumption, and on the other hand, the legal requirements regarding the reduction of exhaust gas emissions. That is why internal combustion engines are often combined as a hybrid concept with an alternative drive and are often only in operation for a short time. The short-term operation creates new requirements for the design and development of an internal combustion engine.
Due to frequent short-term operation, an internal combustion engine is often not run at operating temperature. There is high fuel input into oil, also known as engine oil, or an accumulation of fuel in the engine oil because the fuel can no longer evaporate due to low engine oil temperatures and can be discharged via the crankcase ventilation. The engine oil is diluted by adding fuel to the engine oil. This dilution of the engine oil can lead to poor lubrication of mechanical bearings in the internal combustion engine, also referred to simply as an engine, which can lead to high wear and tear and even component failure. A further challenge arises for the engine application if, after high fuel accumulation in the engine oil, the engine is run at warm operating temperature for a longer journey and the fuel gets into the air path in large quantities via the ventilation.
