Aus dem Stand der Technik sind so genannte Pre-Safe-Mechanismen bekannt, mittels welcher die Fahrzeuginsassen zeitlich kurz vor der Kollision auf diese vorbereitet werden. Dabei wird ausgenutzt, dass in bestimmten Fällen Verkehrsgeräusche allein schon ausreichen können, den so genannten Stapediusreflex auszulösen. Dieser Reflex ist ein Reflexmechanismus des Gehörs, der die Belastung des Innenohrs durch zu hohe Schalldruckpegel reduzieren kann. Bei dem Stapediusreflex kontrahiert der Musculus stapedius aufgrund eines Reflexes, der durch einen hohen Schalldruckpegel ausgelöst wird. Der Steigbügelmuskel zieht sich zusammen, was dazu führt, dass Geräusche im Innenohr weniger stark übertragen werden. Der Stapediusreflex hat eine gewisse Gesamtansprechdauer (Latenzzeit plus Muskelkontraktionsdauer), die in der Größenordnung von etwa 200 bis 300 Millisekunden liegt.
