Description

  • The invention relates to a gas generator, in particular for a vehicle safety system and a vehicle safety system with such a gas generator.
  • Gas generators are used, for example, to fill safety devices in the form of gas bags, which are intended to reduce the impact of vehicle occupants on vehicle parts in the event of an accident. Another purpose for gas generators in safety devices is to effect a mechanical adjustment of a component via a certain path, for example a tightening of a safety belt or a lifting of a vehicle hood in order to dampen a pedestrian impact on a vehicle.
  • The object of the invention is to provide a gas generator and a vehicle safety system with such a gas generator in a compact and efficient design available.
  • According to the invention, the gas generator has a housing in which a first, connected to a pyrotechnic igniter chamber is formed, in which a pressurized gas is provided. A second chamber is connected to the first chamber, wherein after the activation of the gas generator, the compressed gas flows from the first chamber into the second chamber. In the second chamber, a displaceable by the inflowing gas pressure by a maximum displacement piston is added, which is connectable to a power transmission means outside of the gas generator. The second chamber has an outflow opening to the outside, wherein the piston is arranged so that the outflow opening is released only when the piston has moved over a predetermined, preferably the maximum displacement.   • In this case, both the thrust of the outflowing gas and the resulting gas volume are used. The outflow opening, through which an airbag can be filled, is only released after the compressed gas has done its mechanical work in the displacement of the piston, so that it is possible, the total amount of gas produced and the total pressure generated in the first chamber to move the Piston and thus to use the movement of a mechanical part in a safety device. Since no gas preferably flows out beforehand, the entire gas volume generated can subsequently be used to fill one or more gas bags.
  • Conventionally, separate, differently shaped gas generators are used for these two different purposes. As a result, two gas generators must be provided for applications in which both a mechanical movement and the filling of a gas bag is desired, which increases the space required and makes the vehicle safety system more expensive.
  • Although in the invention, the aforementioned two actions are substantially time sequentially feasible, wherein first the movement of the piston and then the filling of the airbag takes place, the time difference for practical purposes can be without object.
  • It is irrelevant whether the first chamber contains a pyrotechnic propellant and / or a pressurized gas, so the gas generator is designed as a cold gas, solid propellant or as a hybrid gas generator. The type of gas generation has no influence on the implementation of the invention.
  • Preferably, the outflow opening is arranged radially on a housing wall of the second chamber. In this way, it is easy to realize, for example, as long as to keep the discharge port blocked by the piston until it has passed on its displacement and thus releases.
