Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a shroud for protecting equipment from high energy radiation and for providing atmosphere-like pressure and temperature conditions in environments of reduced external pressure, particularly for the protection of equipment in space or on extraneous celestial bodies. The invention also relates to the use of such a cover for the protection of equipment from high-energy radiation and to ensure Erddmosphärenähnlicher pressure and temperature conditions.
While such protective enclosures may protect technical equipment to a certain extent from the effects typical of the world, this protection is generally insufficient to allow the use of equipment that has not been specifically designed for space applications. In other words, despite these protective coverings, it is still necessary to use equipment designed specifically for space conditions, but whose development and manufacture is extremely costly.
The invention is therefore based on the object to modify an enclosure of the type mentioned in that can be used on Earth usable equipment without far-reaching adjustments in space.
This object is achieved by an enclosure for the protection of equipment against high-energy radiation and the Gewähleistung Erddmosphärenähnlicher pressure and Temperaturbdingungen in environments reduced external pressure, in particular for the protection of equipment in space or on alien celestial bodies, which is characterized in that the envelope a multilayer structure having at least one outer and one inner mechanical protective layer and at least one heat insulating layer, a gas diffusion-proof layer and a radiation protection layer is arranged between these mechanical protective layers.
This solution is based on the finding that, when using a multilayer construction with a special arrangement of differently acting protective layers, an efficient protective sheath can be created within which ground-like conditions can be set, both with regard to the radiation exposure and with respect to the temperature or the atmospheric pressure. In this way, for example, conventional electronic devices such as computer components or sensors can be used without requiring a special adaptation of these components to a space mission.
In an embodiment, the enclosure according to the invention can be provided that the radiation protection layer is disposed adjacent to the outer mechanical protective layer. Such an arrangement of the protective layers is particularly advantageous, since in this way a radiation penetration of the envelope is already prevented in its outer region or at least greatly attenuated. Hereby aging phenomena or other changes of underlying protective layers of the covering can be avoided as far as possible.
According to a further embodiment of the casing according to the invention, the gas-diffusion-tight layer is arranged adjacent to the inner mechanical protective layer. In this way it can be ensured that a gas atmosphere established inside the enclosure, for example normal breathing air or nitrogen, can not migrate into the further protective layers of the enclosure.
It is further within the scope of the present invention that the heat insulating layer is disposed farther out than the gas diffusion-proof layer. In particular, if the gas diffusion-tight layer is used to confine a layer of gaseous hydrogen as a radiation protection, the further outer arrangement of the heat insulating layer may be advantageous, since in this way one from the outside induced heating of the hydrogen layer and an associated expansion of this gas can be prevented.
Furthermore, it can be provided that the outer mechanical protective layer is provided with a dirt-repellent coating. For this purpose, conventional dirt-repellent coatings can be used, wherein a siliconization of the surface or a coating with Teflon or fluorosilicone represent possible embodiments.
As regards the materials used for the sheathings, it is within the scope of the present invention that the outer and inner mechanical protective layers are made independently of each other of a woven fabric selected from aramid weave, in particular Kevlar or combinations thereof.
In the case of the invention according to the invention, any material which meets the respective requirements can be used as the radiation protection layer. For this purpose, for example, radiation protection layers are made of aliphatic polyamides, especially
The thermal insulation layers used for the sheath of the present invention may be made of a material selected from foamed polymers, especially polyolefin foams such as polyethylene foam, polyurethane foam, multilayer composites such as multilayer aluminized and biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate films with nylon interlayers, or combinations thereof.
The gas-diffusion-tight layer provided for the covering according to the invention may consist of a material which is selected from polyvinyl alcohols, polyvinyl acetates, or combinations thereof.
The gas-diffusion-tight layer can be present in the case of an enclosure according to the invention as a single-layer or multi-layered film. It serves, for example, to prevent diffusion of the gas atmosphere prevailing inside the enclosure to the outside, that is, into space.
It is also within the scope of the present invention that the sheath comprises a further radiation protection layer, which consists in particular of a hydrogen layer filled between two gas-diffusion-tight layers. In order to avoid contact between the two gas-diffusion-tight layers, a plurality of spacers may be arranged between the gas-diffusion-tight layers in this embodiment. The spacers ensure a largely uniform layer thickness of the hydrogen atmosphere, whereby the radiation protection effect of this layer over the entire surface of the enclosure is ensured. Instead of hydrogen, it is also possible to use a chemical compound with a high atomic content of hydrogen, such as water or solids with a high atomic content of hydrogen, between the two gas-diffusion-tight layers.
The enclosure according to the invention may be flexible or else comprise a pressure-resistant layer of plastic or a metal. In the event that the envelope has a pressure-resistant layer, it is advantageous if the pressure-resistant layer is arranged further inside than the radiation protection layer, in particular further inwardly than the heat insulation layer. In this way, the pressure-resistant layer can be protected from thermal impact and radiation exposure from space, which may have undesirable influence on the material properties and the stability of the pressure-resistant layer.
According to a preferred embodiment of the enclosure according to the invention this includes an interior and separates this interior from the environment of the enclosure. In this case, the sheath can either form a continuous protective screen or have interruptions or inserts for sensors or antennas, which are tightly connected to the material of the sheath, so that there is no direct contact between the interior of the sheath and the outside.
In an advantageous embodiment of the enclosure according to the invention the aforementioned interior is filled with a gas atmosphere, in particular with air or an inert gas atmosphere, which is preferably formed by argon, other noble gases or nitrogen and any mixtures of these gases. The filling of the interior with such an atmosphere allows the operation of commercial equipment, as they can be used under atmospheric conditions on Earth.
The thickness of the respective layers can vary over wide ranges and are adapted to the respective requirements.
For further adjustment of the interior conditions to conditions prevailing on the earth, the aforementioned gas atmosphere may have a pressure of 700 to 1200 mbar, in particular 800 to 1100 mbar, preferably atmospheric pressure.
Another object of the invention relates to the use of an enclosure according to the invention for the protection of equipment against high-energy radiation and to ensure Erddmosphärenähnlicher pressure and temperature conditions in environments reduced external pressure, in particular for the protection of equipment in space or on foreign celestial bodies.
The present invention is explained in more detail below with reference to a sectional view of an enclosure according to the invention shown in the single FIGURE.
