The invention relates to a current mirror circuit for generating an in one
Output branch flowing output current, one in a between a Ver
supply voltage connection and ground lying input branch flowing reference
current corresponds, with a first bipolar transistor in the input branch, by the
Collector-emitter path of the current source connected to the collector
supplied reference current flows, and a second bipolar transistor in the output
branch through whose collector-emitter path the output current flows, the Ba
sis connections of the two transistors are interconnected.
In
Current mirror circuits are used to generate a current in an output branch which speaks as exactly as possible a current flowing in an input branch. It is also possible in such a circuit to generate the current in the output branch in such a way that it is in an exact ratio to the current in the input branch. In a known circuit of this type, which is shown in FIG. 2, two bipolar transistors 10 , 12 are provided, the first of which lies in the input branch, while the second lies in the output branch. The reference current Ir, which flows in the input branch and is to be reflected in the output branch as current Ia, is generated by a current source 14 . As can be seen, the base connections of the two transistors 10 and 12 are connected to one another, and the base current Ib required by these transistors is supplied via the drain-source path of a MOS field-effect transistor 16 , the gate connection of which Collector of transistor 10 is connected. Since the gate connection of the MOS field-effect transistor 16 does not draw any current, the reference current Ir generated by the current source 14 flows through the collector-emitter path of the transistor 10 . This current then flows due to the known current mirror effect through the collector-emitter path of the transistor 12 , so that the desired effect is achieved, namely that a current Ia corresponding to the reference current Ir flows in the output branch of the circuit.
Although this known circuit from FIG. 2 fulfills the stated condition very precisely, it has disadvantages if only a small supply voltage Vdd is available, as is often the case with modern battery-powered electronic devices. As can be seen, there is a voltage at point A of the circuit which corresponds to the sum of the base-emitter voltage of the bipolar transistor 10 and the threshold voltage Vth of the MOS field-effect transistor 16 . These two voltages are of the order of magnitude of 0.7 V, so that a voltage of at least 1.4 V occurs at point A. If the supply voltage VDD is only 1.8 V, as can be the case in practical applications, then the current source 14 only has a voltage of 0.4 V at its disposal which is insufficient, the current source 14 with simple means so that it reliably delivers the desired reference current Ir. The circuit of FIG. 2 is therefore only suitable for operation with higher supply voltages.
gangsstrom. In German patent DE 30 24 422 C2, a current mirror circuit is the one

Fig. 2 eine Stromspiegelschaltung nach dem Stand der
Technik. Fig. 2 shows a current mirror circuit according to the prior art.
Die Stromspiegelschaltung von Fig. 1 enthält als Grundbe
standteile die beiden bipolaren Transistoren 10 und 12 sowie
die den Referenzstrom Ir liefernde Stromquelle 14. Der zu
erzeugende Ausgangsstrom Ia fließt durch einen Lastwider
stand R.The current mirror circuit of Fig. 1 comprises, as constituents Grundbe the two bipolar transistors 10 and 12 and the reference current I r-supplying current source 14. The output current I a to be produced flows through a load resistor R.
Feldeffekttransistor 20 besteht. Die Gate-Anschlüsse der p-
Kanal-MOS-Feldeffekttransistoren 16 und 18 sind miteinander
verbunden, während ihre Source-Anschlüsse an der Versor
gungsspannung VDD liegen. Der Drain-Anschluß des p-Kanal-
MOS-Feldeffekttransistors 16 ist mit den Gate-Anschlüssen
dieser beiden MOS-Transistoren verbunden. Ferner ist mit dem
Drain-Anschluß des p-Kanal-MOS-Feldeffekttransistors 16 der
Drain-Anschluß des n-Kanal-MOS-Feldeffekttransistors 20 ver
bunden, dessen Source-Anschluß direkt an Masse gelegt ist.The circuit of FIG. 1 contains a further current mirror circuit, which consists of two p-channel MOS field effect transistors 16 and 18 and an n-channel MOS field effect transistor 20 acting as a current source. The gate connections of the p-channel MOS field-effect transistors 16 and 18 are connected to one another, while their source connections are connected to the supply voltage V DD . The drain connection of the p-channel MOS field-effect transistor 16 is connected to the gate connections of these two MOS transistors. Furthermore, with the drain connection of the p-channel MOS field-effect transistor 16, the drain connection of the n-channel MOS field-effect transistor 20 is connected, the source connection of which is connected directly to ground.
As can be seen in the circuit diagram of FIG. 1, a voltage occurs at point A which corresponds to the threshold voltage V th of the n-channel MOS field-effect transistor 20 . This means that with the same supply voltage V DD for operating the current source 14, a voltage is available which is higher than the base-emitter voltage V be compared to the current mirror circuit of FIG. 2. With a supply voltage V DD of 1.8 V and a transistor threshold voltage V th of 0.7 V, a voltage of 1.1 V is thus available at node A. The current source 14 can be operated with this voltage using simple means. The desired goal, namely to mirror the reference current I r flowing in the input branch exactly in the output branch, is therefore achieved in a very simple manner.
