Das Kernproblem bei der Verwendung der typischen PVC-Weichmacher ist immer die unvermeidliche Migration des Weichmachers über die Zeit und sogar noch verstärkt bei erhöhten Temperaturen. Anwendung finden solche Hohlkörper in den verschiedensten Bereichen, wie z. B. in der Technik als Faltenbälge etc., im Freizeit- oder Sportbereich als Bälle etc., im Consumerbereich als Gartenzwerge oder Figuren allgemein etc., im Hygienebereich und im Spielwarenbereich als Puppen oder Puppenteile. In den beiden letztgenannten Bereichen liegt die Problematik darin, dass die Hohlkörper in engen Kontakt mit dem menschlichen Körper bzw. mit Körperflüssigkeiten kommen. Ist hier Weichmacher an die Oberfläche migriert, wird er vom menschlichen Körper aufgenommen. Um dieser Gesundheitsgefährdung zu begegnen, wurde bereits von der EU ein Verbot beim Einsatz von Kinderspielzeug für Kinder unter drei Jahren ausgesprochen.
