Hustota podestýlky je 250 až 400 kg/m3. Nevýhodou některých podestýlek je malá jímavost tekutin a pachů, což vyžaduje častou obměnu a větší spotřebu. Poněkud ekologicky výhodnější jsou podestýlky vyrobené ze spalitelných látek, jako jsou odpady dřeva a rašeliny a papíru, které je možno po použití spálit. Z hledisky ekologického není pálení použitých podestý lek žádoucí. Podstata vynálezu spočívá v tom, že granule jsou vyrobeny z odpadu hygienických výrobků sloužících pro pohlcování tělních tekutin lidí, jsou kruhového průřezu a obsahují více než 50 hmotnostních procent celulózy, 5 až 15 hmotnostních procent částečně plastifikovaného polyolefinu, a 0,1 až 1 hmotnostního procenta absorbérů. Hustota podestýlky je 250 až 400 kg/m3. To platí jak pro podestýlaná zvířata, tak pro jejich obsluhu. Využívá průmyslového odpadu výrobků, které slouží k pohlcování tělních tekutin lidí. Jde o materiál jak ze zdravotního, tak z hygienického hlediska zcela nezávadný, který by bylo nutno likvidovat jiným způsobem například spalováním. Použitou podestýlku je možno snadno likvidovat i kompostováním.
