Valcovanie za studená sa uplatňuje u materiálov·, ktoré pre malú hrůbku a rýchle chladnutie nie je možné válcovat za tepla. Slúži k dosiahnutiu malých hrúbok, k zušlachteníu povrchov a zlepšeniu mechanických vlastností plechov. Mazivo pri studenom válcování má dve hlavně úlohy, a to odvod tepla vzniknutého z deformačnej práce a z trenia medzi pracovnými valcami a vývalkom a zmenšovat třecí odpor na najmenšiu hodnotu umožňujúcu však ešte válcovací pochod.
