Abstract

A puzzle for a child includes a rigid frame and a set of movable, rigid, non-interlocking pieces. The rigid frame has two opposing broad sides defining a thickness therebetween. Each broad side of the rigid frame defines a plurality of recesses therein. Each recess is surrounded by one or more raised surfaces of the rigid frame. At least one of the recesses on at least one broad side of the rigid frame is configured to loosely contain the plurality of components of the set. The recess of each broad side of the rigid frame is sized to accommodate all of the components of the set simultaneously. The recesses of the two opposite broad sides of the rigid frame are arranged differently so as to form a corresponding arrangement of the set of components when received in the recesses. Claims (20)

1. A puzzle, comprising:
a rigid frame having two opposing broad sides defining a thickness therebetween; and
a set of removable, rigid, non-interlocking components, each component having a planar bottom surface, at least three of the components having different peripheral shapes;
wherein each broad side of the rigid frame defines a plurality of recesses therein, each recess being surrounded by one or more higher surfaces of the rigid frame, at least one of the recesses of each of the two broad sides of the rigid frame being configured to loosely contain a plurality of components of the set;
wherein the recess of each broad side of the rigid frame is sized to accommodate all components of the set simultaneously;
wherein the recesses of the two opposite broad sides of the rigid frame are differently arranged, forming a respective arrangement of the components of the set when received in the recesses; and
wherein the components of the set and the recess of each of the two opposing broad sides of the rigid frame are configured such that when the broad side is oriented vertically upward, the received components are held in the recesses of the broad side by gravity alone.
2. The puzzle according to claim 1, wherein at least some of the members of the group each have a planar top surface opposite the bottom surface, the top and bottom surfaces defining a thickness therebetween.
3. The puzzle according to claim 2, wherein the recess of each broad side of the rigid frame is sized to accommodate all of the members of the group simultaneously with the bottom surface of the members abutting the rigid frame.
4. The puzzle according to claim 2, wherein the planar top surface is planar over the entire extent of the planar top surface and is free of any recesses or protrusions.
5. A puzzle according to claim 2, wherein for at least one of the pieces having a planar top surface, the top surface is smaller than the bottom surface.

12. The puzzle according to claim 1, wherein the non-recessed surface of the rigid frame displays graphics associated with the respective arrangement of the pieces.
13. The puzzle of claim 12 wherein each of the recesses is defined by a bottom surface of the display graphic.
14. The puzzle according to claim 1, wherein the pieces of the group have different colors.
15. The puzzle according to claim 1, wherein the depth to which the recess extends from the non-recessed surface of the rigid frame is greater in one region of the broad side of the rigid frame than in another region of the broad side of the rigid frame on at least one of the broad sides of the rigid frame.
16. The puzzle according to claim 1, wherein the pieces and recesses are configured such that when the pieces are received in the recesses, the pieces extend above a non-recessed surface surrounding the recesses.
17. The puzzle according to claim 1, wherein at least one member of the group has a circular perimeter.
18. The puzzle according to claim 1, wherein at least one recess of each side of the rigid frame accommodates only a single part of the group.
19. A puzzle according to claim 1, wherein exactly two of the members of the set have the same peripheral shape and size.
20. The puzzle according to claim 1, wherein two opposing broad sides of the rigid frame are parallel.
