平板显示器,如液晶显示器(LCD)和有机发光显示器(OLED),包括显示面板、多个驱动显示面板的驱动器、和控制驱动器的控制器。
LCD包括一对提供场产生电极的面板和一层具有介电各向异性的液晶(LC)层,该液晶层插入在该两面板之间。场产生电极通常包括多个像素电极和覆盖面板的整个表面并提供有公共电压的公共电极,该像素电极与开关元件(如薄膜晶体管(TFT))连接以提供产生电场的数据电压。一对场产生电极互相协作并且与插入在其间的液晶一起形成所谓的液晶电容器。
LCD向场产生电极施加电压以产生电场到液晶层,并且可以通过调整穿过液晶电容器的电压来控制电场的强度。因为电场决定液晶分子的取向并且分子取向决定透过液晶层的光透射率,所以通过控制所施加的电压来调整光透射率,因此就得到了所需图像。
为了防止由于长时间应用单向电场等导致的图像恶化,数据电压的极性在每帧、每行、或每点(也就是每像素)关于公共电压反转。
然而,极性反转需要数据电压的大幅度摆动,因此导致产生数据电压的数据驱动器的能耗较高。可以通过将具有相反极性的数据电压的数据线相连接以使得数据线的电压基本上等于公共电压的电荷共享来减少能耗。
然而,电荷共享对于一些数据电压起伏图是无效的。例如,当提供到数据线的数据电压是黑白交替的电压时,已经经历过电荷共享的数据线的电压可能等于黑电压和白电压的中间值,该值与公共电压相差很多。
发明内容
提供一种驱动包括多个像素和连接到像素的多条数据线的液晶显示器的装置。该装置包括:用于产生与像素的图像数据相应的数据电压的数据电压发生器,和选择性地将来自于数据电压发生器的数据电压或至少一个刷新电压输出到多条数据线的电压选择器。

第一和第二刷新电压的极性与在先输出的数据电压的极性相反。
数据电压可以从外部装置提供的多个灰度电压选择,或由数据电压发生器基于外部装置提供的一组刷新灰度电压产生。
至少一个刷新电压是从多个灰度电压中选择的,并且至少一个刷新电压包括从多个灰度电压中减去预定电压的一个最高或最低电压。
电压选择器可以包括:连接在数据电压发生器和多条数据线之间的第一组开关元件;和连接在至少一个刷新电压和多条数据线之间并且与第一组开关元件交替操作的第二组开关元件。

参考图1,面板组件300包括多条显示信号线G1-Gm和D1-Dm以及多个连接到该信号线上并且排列成矩阵的像素。在图2所示中的结构图中,面板组件300包括下部和上部面板100和200以及插入在该两个面板之间的LC层3。
将显示信号线G1-Gm和D1-Dm设置在下部面板100上并且其包括多条传输栅极信号(也称为“扫描信号”)的栅极线G1-Gm,以及多条传输数据信号的数据线D1-Dm。栅极线G1-Gm完全在行方向延伸并且互相完全平行,而数据线D1-Dm完全在列方向延伸并且互相完全平行。

开关元件Q包括在下部面板100上提供的TFT并且其具有三个端子:连接到一条栅极线G1-Gm的控制端;连接到一条数据线D1-Dm的输入端;和连接到LC电容器CLC以及存储电容器CST双方的输出端。
LC电容器CLC包括作为两个端子在下部面板100上提供的像素电极190和在上部面板200上提供的公共电极270。插入在两电极190和270之间的LC层3起到LC电容器CLC的电介质的作用。将像素电极190连接到开关元件Q上并且给公共电极270提供公共电压Vcom并且该公共电极覆盖上部面板200的整个表面。可以选择的是,可以在下部面板100上提供公共电极270,并且电极190和270双方都可以是条形或带形。

信号控制器600控制栅极驱动器400和栅极驱动器500。
现在,将详细描述上述LCD的操作。
从外部图像控制器(未示出)为信号控制器600提供输入图像信号R、G、和B和用于控制显示器的输入控制信号——如垂直同步信号Vsync、水平同步信号Hsync、主时钟MCLK、和数据使能信号DE。在产生了栅极控制信号CONT1和数据控制信号CONT2并在输入控制信号和输入图像信号R、G和B的基础上处理完适合面板组件300操作的图像信号R、G、和B后,信号控制器600传输栅极控制信号CONT1到栅极驱动器400,和传输处理过的图像信号DAT以及数据控制信号CONT2到数据驱动器500。
栅极控制信号CONT1包括用于指导扫描开始的扫描开始信号STV和至少一个用于控制栅极-接通电压Von的输出时间的时钟信号。栅极控制信号CONT1可以进一步包括用于定义栅极-接通电压Von的持续周期的输出使能信号OE。
数据控制信号CONT2包括用于告知一组像素的数据传输开始的水平同步开始信号STH、用于指导提供数据电压到数据线D1-Dm的负载信号LOAD、和数据时钟信号HCLK。数据控制信号CONT2可以进一步包括用于反转数据电压的极性的反转信号RVS(关于公共电压Vcom)。
响应来自于信号控制器600的数据控制信号CONT2,数据驱动器500从信号控制器600接收用于一组像素的一包图像数据DAT,将图像信号DAT转换为从灰度电压发生器800提供的灰度电压中选择的模拟数据电压,并且提供数据电压到相关的数据线D1-Dm。
栅极驱动器400响应来自于信号控制器600的栅极控制信号CONT1施加栅极-接通电压Von到栅极线G1-Gm,这样就接通了连接到相关栅极线上的开关元件Q。将提供到数据线D1-Dm的数据电压通过被激活的开关元件Q提供到相关像素中。

如图3所示,根据本实施例的数据驱动电路501包括移位寄存器510、锁存器520、数模(DA)转换器530、缓冲器540、和数据线充电器550。一个或多个数据驱动电路510可以形成数据驱动器500。

数据电压控制开关元件SL1-SLm基于应用到开关元件的反转控制端子上的负载信号控制来自于缓冲器540的数据电压的传输。例如,当负载信号LOAD处于低状态时,开关元件SL1-SLm将数据电压传输到输出端子Y1-Ym内,并且当负载信号LOAD处于高状态时,它们锁定数据电压。
将刷新电压控制开关元件SC1-SCm选择性地连接到一对刷新电压线L1和L2。例如,如图4所示,将连接到奇数输出端子Y1、Y3、...的奇数开关元件SC1、SC3、...连接到第二刷新电压线L2上,而将连接到偶数输出端子Y2、Y4、...的偶数开关元件SC2、SC4、...连接到第一刷新电压线L1上。开关元件SC1-SCm控制刷新电压线L1和L2以及输出端子Y1-Ym之间的连接。尤其是,通过将负载信号LOAD的极性反转到应用于控制开关元件SL1-SLm的负载信号来控制开关元件SC1-SCm。因而,当负载信号LOAD处于高状态时,开关元件SC1-SCm将施加在刷新电压线L1和L2上的电压传输到输出端子Y1-Ym内,并且当负载信号处于低状态时锁定参考电压。
将电压选择开关元件SW1-SW4分别连接在第二刷新电压线L2和正黑色电压Vb+之间、第一刷新电压线L1和正黑色电压Vb+之间、第二刷新电压线L2和负黑色电压Vb-之间、以及第一刷新电压线L1和负黑色电压Vb-之间。开关元件SW1-SW4根据包括反转控制信号RVS的开关信号CS,将正和负黑色电压Vb+和Vb-传输到第一和第二刷新电压线L1和L2上。例如,当开关信号CS处于高电位时,开关元件SW2和SW3接通以分别将正黑色电压Vb+传输到第一刷新电压线L1,并且将负黑色电压Vb-传输到第二刷新电压线L2,而开关元件SW1和SW4被关断。相反的是,当开关信号CS处于低电位时,分别给第一和第二刷新电压线L1和L2提供负黑色电压Vb-和正黑色电压Vb+。
如图1-4中所示的数据驱动器的操作将参考附图5-8详细描述。
图5表示了图1-4中的数据驱动器的典型的波形;图6是在数据电压输出期间(TD)的等效电路图;并且图7和图8是在刷新电压输出期间的等效电路图。尤其是,图7是在刷新电压输出期间TCO的等效电路图并且图8是在刷新电压输出期间TCE的等效电路图。
参考图5,用于正常黑色模式LCD的数据驱动电路501连同帧反转一起执行单点反转。例如,当在第一帧中奇数输出端子Y1、Y3、...输出的数据电压的极性是负并且偶数输出端子Y2、Y4、...输出的数据电压的极性是正时,其极性在下一帧将被互换。此外,数据驱动电路501输出在相邻帧内的数据电压的输出之间的刷新电压,这一点将详细描述。
在第一帧的数据电压输出持续周期TD期间,负载信号LOAD处于低状态从而数据驱动电路501保持电压输出。如图6所示,数据电压控制开关元件SL1-SLm接通以使数据电压通过,同时刷新电压控制开关元件SC1-SCm关断以锁定刷新电压,从而使数据驱动电路501输出数据电压。因此,奇数输出端子Y1、Y3、...的输出电压Vyo(下文中称之为“奇数端子输出电压”)具有负极性,并且偶数输出端子Y2、Y4、...的输出电压Vye(下文中称之为“偶数端子输出电压”)具有正极性。
当负载信号LOAD变高以开始刷新电压输出持续周期TCO时,如图7所示,开关元件SL1-SLm关断以锁定数据电压并且开关元件SC1-SCm接通以使刷新电压通过,从而使数据驱动电路501输出刷新电压。因为开关信号CS处于低状态,所以开关元件SW1和SW4接通并且开关元件SW2和SW3关断,从而使施加到第一和第二刷新电压线L1和L2的刷新电压分别等于负和正黑色电压Vb-和Vb+。因此,输出电压Vyo和Vye的极性被反转。
当负载信号LOAD再次变低以开始下一数据电压输出持续周期时,数据驱动电压501输出数据电压并且输出电压Vyo和Vye保持它们的极性。
当负载信号LOAD再次变高以开始下一刷新电压输出持续周期TCE时,数据驱动电路501输出刷新电压并且输出电压Vyo和Vye反转它们的极性。
同时,应用在IC芯片内的上述的数据驱动电路的能耗P由下面给出:
其中m是IC芯片沟道的数量、C是数据线的电容、Vs是图5中所示的数据电压的摆动宽度、并且F是水平频率。
与之相比,没有和具有电荷共享的传统的数据驱动芯片分别具有下面的能耗:
P∝m×C×Vs×F;和
因此,根据本发明的实施例的数据驱动IC芯片的能耗比传统的数据驱动IC芯片的能耗降低了很多。
图3-8中所示的数据驱动器可以有各种变形。
例如,在上面的描述中,数据驱动电路501执行帧反转和单点反转。在另一个实施例中,数据驱动电路可以执行其他类型的反转方案,例如线反转或帧反转。在这种情况下,数据驱动电路的数据线充电器可以仅使用一个刷新电压并且所有数据线被驱动到相同的刷新电压。
在另一个实施例中,正常白色模式LCD的数据驱动器可以用白色电压Vw+和Vw-代替黑色电压Vb+和Vb-。
可以选择的是,黑色电压Vb+和Vb-可以用公共电压Vcom代替。
开关元件SL1-SLm、SC1-SCm和SW1-SW4的传输门可以用其他开关元件如TFT代替。
数据驱动器500可以执行双点反转而不是单点反转。
充电器550可以用作独立的装置,可以将其安装在面板组件300上。
数据驱动器550可以用于其他的显示装置。
虽然上文中已经详细描述了本发明的优选实施例,但可以清楚的理解对于本领域的普通技术人员来说基于此处的基本发明概念的许多变化和/或修改,如从属权利要求中所描述的仍将落入本发明的实质和范围内。
Claims (22)
1、一种用于驱动液晶显示器的装置,该液晶显示器包括多个像素和多条连接在像素上的数据线,该装置包括:
用于产生与像素的图像数据相应的数据电压的数据电压发生器;
选择性地将来自于数据电压发生器的数据电压或至少一个刷新电压输出到多条数据线的电压选择器。
2、根据权利要求1所述的装置,其中数据电压具有以周期形式反转的极性。
3、根据权利要求2所述的装置,其中至少一个刷新电压包括具有相反极性的第一和第二刷新电压。
4、根据权利要求3所述的装置,其中电压选择器以交替形式输出数据电压和至少一个刷新电压。
5、根据权利要求4所述的装置,其中当电压选择器输出至少一个刷新电压时,电压选择器以交替形式输出第一和第二刷新电压。
6、根据权利要求5所述的装置,其中将要被输出的第一和第二刷新电压的极性与在先输出的数据电压的极性相反。
7、根据权利要求1所述的装置,其中数据电压是从外部装置提供的或数据电压发生器基于外部装置提供的一组刷新灰度电压产生的多个灰度电压中选择的。
8、根据权利要求7所述的装置,其中至少一个刷新电压是从多个灰度电压中选择的。
9、根据权利要求8所述的装置,其中至少一个刷新电压包括多个灰度电压中的至少一个最高或最低电压减去预定电压。
10、根据权利要求1所述的装置,其中电压选择器包括:
连接在数据电压发生器和多条数据线之间的第一组开关元件;
连接在至少一个刷新电压和多条数据线之间并且与第一组开关元件交替操作的第二组开关元件。
11、根据权利要求10所述的装置,其中至少一个刷新电压包括第一和第二刷新电压。
12、根据权利要求11所述的装置,其中电压选择器进一步包括交替地将第一和第二刷新电压连接到第二组开关元件上的开关单元。
13、根据权利要求12所述的装置,其中第二组开关元件包括:
连接在开关单元和多条数据线之间的第三组开关元件,开关单元为第三组开关元件提供第一和第二刷新电压中的一个;和
连接在开关单元和多条数据线之间、与第三组开关元件单元独立的第四组开关元件,开关单元为第四组开关元件提供第一和第二刷新电压中的另一个。
14、根据权利要求13所述的装置,其中数据电压具有以周期形式反转的极性并且第一和第二刷新电压具有与在先输出的数据电压相反的极性。
15、根据权利要求14所述的装置,其中第一和第二组开关元件包括传输门。
16、一种驱动液晶显示器的方法,该方法包括步骤:
为液晶显示器提供具有负极性的第一数据电压;
在提供了第一数据电压后为液晶显示器提供第一刷新电压;
在提供了第一刷新电压后为液晶显示器提供具有正极性的第二数据电压;以及
在提供了第二数据电压后为液晶显示器提供不同于第一刷新电压的第二刷新电压。
17、根据权利要求16所述的方法,其中第一刷新电压具有正极性并且第二刷新电压具有负极性。
18、根据权利要求17所述的方法,其中第一和第二刷新电压包括黑色或白色灰度电压。
19、一种显示装置,包括:
多个用于显示图像的像素;和
多条连接在像素上并交替地将数据电压和两个刷新电压的至少其中之一输出到像素的数据线。
20、根据权利要求19所述的显示装置,进一步包括:
产生与图像数据相应的数据电压的数据电压发生器;和
选择性地将数据电压或至少两个刷新电压之一输出到多条数据线的电压选择器。
21、根据权利要求20所述的显示装置,其中至少两个刷新电压包括具有相反极性的第一和第二刷新电压。
22、根据权利要求21所述的显示装置,其中第一和第二刷新电压包括黑色或白色灰度电压。
