Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及电致发光显示器件,例如采用有机LED器件如聚合物LED的电致发光显示器件。
背景技术
采用电致发光,发光显示元件的矩阵显示器件是众所周知的。这些显示元件可以包括例如采用聚合物材料的有机薄膜电致发光元件,或者为采用传统III-V半导体复合物的发光二极管(LED)。近年来在有机电致发光材料,特别是在聚合物材料方面的研究已经证明了它们可实际应用于视频显示器件的能力。这些材料一般包括一层或多层夹在一对电极之间的半导体共轭聚合物,其中一个是透明的,另一个是一种适合于将空穴或电子注入聚合物层的材料。可利用CVD工艺或简单由采用了可溶解共轭聚合物的溶液的旋涂技术来制造聚合物材料。也可以使用喷墨打印。有机电致发光材料展示了类似二极管的I-V特性,所以它们能提供显示功能和开关功能,且因此能在无源类型的显示器中使用。另一选择为,这些材料可用于有源矩阵显示器件,其中每个像素包括一个显示元件和一个用于控制流过显示元件的电流的开关器件。
此类显示器件具有电流寻址的显示元件。结果,在更为成熟的液晶显示技术中使用的驱动方案一般不适用于电致发光显示。用于电致发光显示的传统模拟驱动方案包括给显示元件提供可控电流。将一个电流源晶体管设置为像素结构的一部分,将栅电压加到电流源晶体管上用于确定流过显示元件的电流已为公众所知。存储电容在寻址阶段之后保持栅电压。然而,跨衬底的晶体管特性的不同产生了栅电压和源-漏电流之间的关系的不同,并且在显示的图像结果中产生了伪像。
特别是在低亮度级别,这些显示将不均匀。
也已经提出了数字驱动方案。在这些方案中,将LED器件有效地驱动为两个可能的电压级别。这样克服了不均匀的问题,因为这些像素不再被驱动为低亮度级别。这样也减少了像素电路中的功率消耗,因为不再需要在线性区中将晶体管操作为电流源。替代地,可将所有晶体管完全导通或完全截止,这样将减少功率消耗。由于相同的原因这样的方案对晶体管特性变化不敏感。此方案仅给出了两个可能的像素输出。然而,灰度级像素输出能采用多种方法来实现。
在一种方案中,可将像素分组而形成较大的像素。可独立地对组中的像素进行寻址,以产生灰度级,其是激活的组中的像素数目的函数。这通常称为面积比方法。此方案的缺陷在于降低了显示的分辨率和增加了像素的复杂性。
在另一种可选的方法中,像素能被比帧速率更快地接通和切断,因此灰度级实施为接通像素的工作周期的函数。这通常称为时间比方法。例如,可将一个帧周期以比率1∶2∶4(平均间隔地给出8个灰度级值)分成子帧周期。这样增加了所需的驱动能力(否则需要降低帧速率),且因此增加了显示成本。
发明内容
按照本发明的第一方面,提供一种包括一个显示像素阵列的电致发光(EL)显示器件,每个显示像素包括一个EL显示元件和一个用于根据数据电压驱动流过该EL显示元件的电流的电流源电路,其中该显示器件可工作在位于每个帧周期中的至少第一和第二阶段(phase)中:
第一阶段具有第一持续时间,且在此期间能驱动第一多个模拟驱动电流中的第一个流过该EL显示元件;及
第二阶段具有不同于第一持续时间的第二持续时间,且在此期间,能驱动第二多个模拟驱动电流中的第二个流过该EL显示元件,其中多个模拟驱动电流中的第一和第二个是独立可选的。
此器件结合了具有一个模拟驱动方案的时间比方法。在不同的阶段(两个或多个)期间,像素可被驱动为多个模拟级别中的一个。因此,一个较短的阶段可以提供较高(较小)分辨率的增加,而一个较长的阶段能提供较低(较大)分辨率的增加。然后合并的输出可提供比模拟驱动级别(drive level)更多的级别。能利用较高的驱动电流依次实现低亮度输出,但这是在一个短的持续时间上进行的。
多个模拟驱动级别可以包括n个驱动级别,且其中一个阶段的持续时间大约等于另一个阶段的持续时间的n倍。
在一个实施例中,第一多个模拟驱动电流的数目与第二多个模拟驱动电流的数目相同。在每个阶段中,然后能结合n个级别(包括零)以提供n2个模拟级别。例如,可以使用8个模拟级别(包括零)提供6位(64级)的分辨率。那么最低的电流驱动级别是最高电流驱动级别的1/7。
在另一个实施例中,第一多个模拟驱动电流包括第一数目为n个的用于提供最低n个亮度级的驱动电流级别(包括零),且第二多个模拟驱动电流包括第二数目为m个的用于提供最高m个亮度级的非零驱动电流级别,其中n+m是亮度级的总数。在此情况下,较短的阶段仅用于第一最低的亮度级。对于较高的亮度级,仅使用第二阶段。那么在第二阶段中能被驱动的像素的级别数目m高于在第一阶段中能被驱动的像素的级别数目n。例如,n可以是能提供给最低8个级别(0至7)的8,而通过在第二阶段中将像素驱动为56个不同级别中的一个来提供第8至第63的级别。
每个像素可以包括一个驱动晶体管、一个用于存储驱动晶体管的栅电压的存储电容和一个在寻址阶段向驱动二极管的栅极切换数据电压的寻址晶体管。因此,可以使用一个传统的电压寻址电流源像素来实施本发明。
本发明的显示器件可在一个便携式装置如移动电话中使用。
本发明还提供一种驱动一个含有一个显示像素阵列的电致发光(EL)显示器件的方法,每个显示像素包括一个EL显示元件和一个用于根据数据电压驱动流过该EL显示元件的电流的电流源电路,该方法包括:
在具有第一持续时间的第一阶段中,驱动第一多个模拟驱动电流中的第一个流过该EL显示元件;及

具体实施方式
参照图1,一个有源矩阵寻址电致发光显示器件包括一个具有一个规则间隔像素的行列矩阵阵列的面板,该面板由方块1表示,且该面板包括电致发光显示元件2和关联的开关装置,该面板位于行(选择)和列(数据)地址导线4和6的交叉组之间的交叉点上。为了简化在图中仅示出了一些像素。实际上可以有几百行和几百列像素。由外围驱动电路经由行列地址导线组对像素1进行寻址,该外围驱动电路包括一个行扫描驱动电路8和一个列数据驱动电路9,电路8和9连接至各组导线的末尾。
电致发光显示元件2包括一个有机发光二极管,在此表示为二极管元件且包括一对电极,在该对电极之间夹着一层或多层有机电致发光显示材料有源层(active layer)。该阵列的显示元件和关联的有源矩阵电路一起被支承在一个绝缘支承的一侧。显示元件的阴极或者阳极由透明导电材料形成。支承是如玻璃的透明材料,最接近衬底的显示元件2的电极由一种如ITO的透明导电材料组成,因此由电致发光层产生的光能穿过这些电极和该支承以便被位于支承的另一侧的观众看见。有机电致发光材料层的厚度一般在100nm和200nm之间。能用于元件2的合适的有机电致发光材料的典型例子是公知的,且在EP-A-0717446中已经描述了。也能使用如在WO96/36959中所描述的共轭聚合物材料。
图2以简单示意的形式显示了一个公知的像素和驱动电路结构。每个像素1包括EL显示元件2和相关的驱动电路。驱动电路具有寻址晶体管16,该晶体管被行导线4上的行寻址脉冲导通。当寻址晶体管16被导通时,列导线6上的电压能传递到像素的剩余部分。具体而言,寻址晶体管16将列导线电压加到电流源20上,该电流源包括一个驱动晶体管22和一个存储电容24。列电压被加到驱动晶体管22的栅极上,即使在行寻址脉冲已经结束之后,该栅极仍被存储电容24保持在此电压。
驱动晶体管22是一个PMOS器件,且该电路是采用低温多晶硅(LTPS)形成的。LTPS晶体管的晶体管特性是不均匀的,且此不均匀的效应将对像素电路产生不均匀的电流源操作。由于LED的亮度取决于电流,所以显示的亮度是不均匀的。
有几种提议是利用电流寻址的像素,其中像素电路包括用于取样驱动电流的电流镜电路。然而,这样增加了像素的复杂性,但其能在保持电压寻址的像素的同时优选解决了不均匀问题。
这些电压寻址的像素在低像素电流时趋向于不均匀,而在较高电流时趋向于可接受。
本发明提供一种驱动方案,利用该方案仅在高电流时驱动像素,但其保持了大量的模拟驱动级别,例如满足每像素6位的标准。
图3显示了本发明的第一驱动方案的可能驱动级别。帧周期被分成两个阶段30、32。这样需要在每帧中对所有像素寻址两次。例如,在第一阶段30的开头能对所有像素一行接一行地寻址一次,然后当以相同的一行接一行的顺序对所有像素再次寻址时,需要在第二阶段32的开头对全部像素阵列及时寻址。
这样可以提供一个较短的可利用的行寻址周期,但这对于例如用于便携式产品的小(具有较少行)显示屏,不是问题,或者其中例如对于便携式设备还能降低帧速率。
第一阶段30具有相对较短的持续时间,在此阶段中能驱动8个模拟驱动电流级别31(包括零)中的一个流过EL显示元件。作为短持续时间的结果,这8个级别提供了最低的8个亮度级别(即,级别0到7)。
第二阶段32具有相对较长的持续时间,具体为比第一阶段的持续时间长8倍。在图3的例子中,能驱动同样8个模拟驱动电流级别33流过EL显示元件,因此第二阶段提供了亮度级0、8、16、24、32、40、48和56。第一和第二阶段的级别是独立可选的,所以对从两个阶段输出的亮度相加能实现所有的64级。
图4显示了如何利用图3的级别提供第6亮度级的显示。在此情况下,像素在第一阶段中被驱动为第6级,而在第二阶段中被切断。
图5显示了如何利用图3的级别提供第50亮度级的显示。在此情况下,像素在第一阶段中被驱动为第2级,而在第二阶段中被驱动为第6级。
图6显示了本发明的第二此驱动方案的不同阶段中的可能驱动级别。在此实施例中,在第一阶段30中像素被驱动到级别31,其提供了最低的n个亮度级别,但第二阶段32采用不同的更大数目的驱动电流级别34来(单独)提供剩余的亮度级。
例如,第一阶段还能具有8个用于提供最低的8个级别(包括零)的级别,而在第二阶段中通过将像素驱动为56个不同的级别34中的一个而能提供第8到第63级。为此目的,第二阶段又比第一阶段长8倍。为了提供最高的级别(63),第二阶段中的峰值驱动电流如图6所示那样更高,因此平均电流等于第一阶段30中的峰值驱动电流,尽管第一阶段被关掉了。第二阶段(采用一个正常化的级别)中的峰值电流需要为63/8(7.875)。
图7显示了如何使用图6的级别提供第6亮度级的显示。这仅使用第一阶段30来实现。图8显示了如何使用图3的级别提供第50亮度级的显示。在此情况下,仅使用第二阶段,且驱动为50/8的级别。
如上所述,本发明的显示器件可在一个便携式装置如移动电话中使用。图9显示了一个结合了本发明的显示屏42的移动电话40。
上述像素电路仅是能利用本发明改进的可能的像素结构的例子。具体而言,为了增加最小的驱动电流,能采用本发明的教导改进任意的用于给EL显示元件提供固定电压的像素设计。这也可通过减少驱动级别的数目来实现,或者不希望如此。所需的用于提供紧密间隔的电压驱动级别的驱动电路是能很容易地得到的。
上面给出了具有两个阶段的特定例子,且在第一阶段中具有7个电压级别。然而,可以存在两个以上的以指数方式(例如1∶4∶16或1∶3∶9)缩放持续时间的阶段,。在这些情况下,级别的数目相应地缩放。在第一阶段中减少的级别的数目越多,最高与最低驱动电流之间的差别越小,因此减少了不均匀效应。然而,保持一个基本的模拟驱动方案以使能容易地获得多个级别(例如6位)的分辨率。在上述例子中,最低的驱动电流是峰值驱动电流的1/7(图3)和1/7.875(图6)。
通过阅读本发明的说明书,可以看出其它调整对于本领域普通技术人员来说是很明显的。这些调整可以包括在矩阵电致发光显示及其部件领域来说已经是公知的其它特征,其可代替或加到在此已经描述的特征上使用。
Claims (12)
