Abstract

Description
技术领域
本发明涉及一种等离子体显示面板(PDP)的驱动方法。更具体地说,本发明涉及一种在地址周期中具有减少了功率消耗的PDP的驱动方法。
背景技术
已经开发了各种平板显示器,例如液晶显示器(LCD)、场发射显示器(FED)以及PDP。在这些显示器中,PDP具有更高的分辨率、更高的发射效率、以及更宽的视角。因此,尤其是在大于四十英寸的大尺寸的显示器中,PDP正被认为是传统的阴极射线管(CRT)的主要代替品。
PDP使用由气体放电产生的等离子体来显示字符或图像,并且它可以包括以矩阵格式排列的数十万乃至几百万像素。依据所施加的驱动电压波形和放电单元的结构,PDP为直流(DC)PDP或交流(AC)PDP。
DC PDP的电极被暴露于放电空间中,并且当给其施加电压时电流在该放电空间中流动。因此,为了限制电流,DC PDP需要电阻器。相反,AC PDP的电极由介电层覆盖,并因为自然形成的电容分量而限制了电流。同样,介电层使电极避免了由于放电所导致的离子冲击,因此AC PDP的寿命比DC PDP要长。
图1显示传统的AC PDP的部分透视图。
如图1所示,在第一玻璃衬底1上形成平行成对的扫描电极4和维持电极5,并且由介电层2和保护膜3覆盖这些扫描电极和维持电极。在第二玻璃衬底6上设置有多个被绝缘层7所覆盖的地址电极8。阻挡臂9被形成在绝缘层7上,该阻挡臂9在地址电极8之间并和地址电极8平行,以及荧光层10被形成在绝缘层7的表面上和阻挡臂9的两侧上。第一和第二玻璃衬底1和6密封在一起以在其间形成放电空间11,扫描电极4和维持电极5被垂直于地址电极8设置。放电空间11在地址电极8和一对扫描电极4和维持电极5之间形成放电单元12。
图2示意性地示出图1的AC PDP的典型电极设置。
如图2中所示,PDP的电极以m×n矩阵形式设置。地址电极A1至Am被设置在列方向上,n个扫描电极Y1至Yn(Y电极)和n个维持电极X1至Xn(X电极)被交替地设置在行方向上。图2中的放电单元12对应于图1中的放电单元12。
图3示出了PDP的传统的驱动波形图。
根据图3中所示的PDP的驱动方法,每一个子场包括复位周期、地址周期和维持周期。
在复位周期中,消除了先前维持放电的壁电荷,并且为稳定地进行下一个地址周期的操作而产生壁电荷。
在地址周期中,选择将要被接通的单元,并且壁电荷聚集到所选的单元中。
在维持周期中,执行在所选单元上显示图像的放电。
壁电荷被形成在与每一个电极相邻的放电单元的壁上,并且它们聚集到电极上。虽然实际上壁电荷并不与电极接触,但是在下面壁电荷被描述为“产生”、“形成”或“聚集”在其上。此外,通过壁电荷穿过在放电单元中的气体形成的电势差为壁电压。
在每一个子场的复位周期期间施加的复位波形,可以对Y电极施加上升沿,产生不良放电,施加下降沿给Y电极,并且统一地建立单元的壁电荷状态。在维持周期中,来自从先前地址周期的未选单元不产生放电,并且栅偏极微粒(priming particle)能够被维持到维持周期之后。因此,在复位周期中不需要施加上升沿来产生壁电荷。
如美国专利号No.6294875所公开的,在第一子场的复位周期中,复位操作通过包括上升沿和下降沿的主复位波形来完成,而在下一个子场的预定周期中可以应用用来施加下降沿的选择性复位波形。这种传统的驱动波形如图4所示。
然而,关于如图4中所示的传统驱动波形,为应用选择的复位波形而在子场的地址周期中给地址电极施加的电压,以及为应用主复位波形而在子场的地址周期中给地址电极施加的电压是相等的。因此,在地址周期中功率被浪费了。
发明内容
本发明提供了一种在地址周期中具有减少了功率消耗的等离子体显示面板,以及一种驱动该等离子体显示面板的方法。
本发明的附加的特点将在随后的描述中阐述,并且本发明的部分特点从描述中将显而易见,或可以通过本发明的实践应用而学得。
本发明公开了一种用于等离子体显示面板的方法,该等离子体显示面板包括第一电极和地址电极,包含利用包括有第一子场和第二子场的多个子场驱动该等离子体显示面板。在第一子场的地址周期中的所选择的放电单元中的地址电极和第一电极之间存在的电压差以及在第二子场的地址周期中的所选择的放电单元中的地址电极和第一电极之间存在的电压差是不同的。
本发明也公开了一种PDP,该PDP包括第一衬底、第二衬底、在第一衬底上设置的地址电极、以及在第二衬底上设置的第一电极。由地址电极和第一电极形成放电单元。在复位周期、地址周期和维持周期中,驱动电路给第一电极和地址电极提供驱动信号,利用包括第一子场和第二子场的多个子场驱动等离子体显示面板。在第一子场中,驱动电路在复位周期中将包括上升沿和下降沿的复位脉冲施加到第一电极上,并且在地址周期中在所选择的放电单元中施加第一电压给地址电极。在第二子场中,驱动电路在复位周期中将包括下降沿而没有上升沿的复位脉冲施加到第一电极上,并在地址周期中在所选择的放电单元中施加第二电压给地址电极。第一电压和第二电压是不同的。

如图5中所示,在子场SF1的地址周期中施加到所选择的放电单元的地址电极A上的电压Va1低于在子场SFn的地址周期中施加到所选择的放电单元的地址电极A上的电压Va2。
在子场SF1的复位周期中,复位操作通过施加给Y电极上的包括上升沿和下降沿的主复位波形来执行,由此,因为上升沿而在放电单元中充分地产生栅偏极微粒(priming particles)。另一方面,在子场SFn的复位周期中,复位操作通过下降沿而不通过上升沿来执行,该复位操作可以产生的栅偏极微粒小于包括上升沿的子场SF1的复位波形产生的栅偏极微粒。
因此,当子场SF1的地址电压Va1低于子场SFn的地址电压Va2时,随着具有上升沿的主复位波形来执行寻址操作(addressing operation)。
举例来说,当子场SFn的地址电压Va2大约为80伏时,当地址电压Va1大约为65伏时,在子场SF1的地址周期中可以准确地执行寻址操作。
如下所述,虽然本发明的第一示例性实施例提供在地址周期中施加给地址电极的不同的地址电压,但是仍可能对Y电极施加不同的扫描电压。
图6示出了根据本发明的第二示例性实施例的PDP的驱动波形曲线图。
如图6中所示,在子场SF1的地址周期中所选的放电单元中给Y电极施加的电压Vsc1高于在子场SFn的地址周期中施加给Y电极的电压Vsc2。
因为在子场SF1中的复位周期通过施加上升沿就能够充分地产生栅偏极微粒,所以当第一子场SF1的地址电极A和Y电极之间的电压差小于子场SFn的地址电极A和Y电极之间的电压差时,可以正确地执行寻址操作。
根据本发明的第一示例性实施例,由于第一子场SF1中的上升沿复位波形的应用,当在第一子场SF1中的地址电极A和Y电极之间的电压差小于后面的子场SFn中的地址电极A和Y电极之间的电压差时,就可以减少功率消耗。
对本领域技术人员来说将显而易见的是,在不脱离本发明的精神或范围的情况下,能对本发明做出各种改进和变形。因此,本发明意在覆盖包括在所附的权利要求和他们的等效物的范围内对本发明进行的各种改进和变形。

Claims (10)
1.一种用于驱动包括第一电极和地址电极的等离子体显示面板的方法,该方法包括:
驱动具有包括第一子场和第二子场的多个子场的等离子体显示面板;和
使得在第一子场的地址周期中的所选择的放电单元中的地址电极和第一电极之间的电压差与在第二子场的地址周期中的所选择的放电单元中的地址电极和第一电极之间的电压差不相同。
2.根据权利要求1所述的方法,还包括:
在第一子场的复位周期中施加包括上升沿和下降沿的复位脉冲;以及
在第二子场的复位周期中施加包括下降沿而没有上升沿的复位脉冲。
3.根据权利要求1所述的方法,其中,在第一子场的地址周期中施加到所选择的放电单元中的地址电极上的第一电压的大小不同于在第二子场的地址周期中施加到所选择的放电单元中的地址电极上的第二电压的大小。
4.根据权利要求3所述的方法,其中,第一电压的大小小于第二电压的大小。
5.根据权利要求1所述的方法,其中,在第一子场的地址周期中施加到所选择的放电单元中的第一电极上的第三电压的大小不同于在第二子场的地址周期中施加到所选择的放电单元中的第一电极上的第四电压的大小。
6.根据权利要求5所述的方法,其中,第三电压的大小大于第四电压的大小。
7.一种等离子体显示面板,包括:
第一衬底和第二衬底;
设置在第一衬底上的地址电极;
设置在第二衬底上的第一电极;
由地址电极和第一电极形成的放电单元;以及
驱动电路,用于在复位周期、地址周期和维持周期中给第一电极和地址电极提供驱动信号,
其中利用包括第一子场和第二子场的多个子场来驱动所述等离子体显示面板,
其中所述驱动电路,在第一子场中,在复位周期中将包括上升沿和下降沿的复位脉冲施加给第一电极,而在地址周期中将第一电压施加到在所选择的放电单元中的地址电极上;以及
其中所述驱动电路,在第二子场中,在复位周期中将包括下降沿而没有上升沿的复位脉冲施加到第一电极上,而在地址周期中将第二电压施加到所选择的放电单元中的地址电极上;
其中所述第一电压不同于所述第二电压。
8.根据权利要求7所述的等离子体显示面板,其中,所述第一电压小于所述第二电压。
9.一种等离子体显示面板,包括:
第一衬底和第二衬底;
设置在第一衬底上的地址电极;
设置在第二衬底上的第一电极;
由地址电极和第一电极形成的放电单元;以及
驱动电路,用于在复位周期、地址周期和维持周期中给第一电极和地址电极提供驱动信号,
其中利用包括第一子场和第二子场的多个子场来驱动所述等离子体显示面板,
其中所述驱动电路,在第一子场中,在复位周期中将包括上升沿和下降沿的复位脉冲施加给第一电极,而在地址周期中将第一电压施加到所选择的放电单元中的第一电极上;
其中所述驱动电路,在第二子场中,在复位周期中将包括下降沿而没有上升沿的复位脉冲施加给第一电极,而在地址周期中将第二电压施加到所选择的放电单元中的第一电极上;以及
其中,所述第一电压不同于所述第二电压。
10.根据权利要求9所述的等离子体显示面板,其中,所述第一电压大于所述第二电压。
