Abstract

Description
技术领域
本发明是关于常白超扭曲向列(NW-STN)显示器及其制造方法的。
背景技术
超扭曲向列(STN)显示器在现有技术中是已知的,例如象在EP0,936,490中公开的那样。与传统的扭曲向列(TN)液晶显示器(LCD)相比,它们具有大扭曲角(典型地大约为180°-270°)。STN结构会导致很陡的电光响应特征,这正是高多路驱动(multiplex driving)所需要的。出于这个原因,当被用于具有高水平无源多路复用(passivemultiplex)的大规模显示时,与传统的TN-LCD相比,STN-LCD具有出色的图像品质。然而,由于STN液晶(LC)层的双折射效应,这些显示器显示出较差的对比度并且不是非彩色的,这限制了它们在黑白(BW)与彩色显示器中的使用。
对于STN显示器这些不希望的色彩效果找到了一个解决方案,通过使用一个第二STN层来补偿这些色彩效果,该STN层被以其光学轴线垂直于显示层的光线轴线的方式堆叠。这种补偿方法是基于Babinett补偿器原理的:对于垂直入射光,由均匀的双折射层所造成的光学效应可以被一个位置垂直于第一层的、相同的第二层完全补偿。由此,如果该层具有与STN显示单元相同的光学延迟(OR)值以及相等但相反的扭曲角,则在STN显示单元中产生的光学效应可以被一个第二STN层(=补偿或者延迟层)完全补偿,从而,OR被表示为层厚度与双折射之积(d·Δn)。
这种STN补偿层的高补偿质量被表现在双单元超扭曲向列(DSTN)显示器中,其中使用一个相同的(非寻址的)、带有相反扭曲的第二STN LC单元来补偿可寻址的STN-LC单元的光学效应。如果这样一个DSTN显示器被安放于交叉偏光器之间,被补偿的显示器的关闭状态非常黑,并且这些常黑(NB)显示的反差比可以非常高(通过适当地调节单元的延迟值和扭曲角度)。这种NB显示器在其关闭状态为暗的,而在其打开状态为亮的。这些DSTN显示器具有高图像品质但要承受其增加的重量和厚度、易碎性以及高生产成本。
为了避免DSTN显示器的缺点,均匀拉伸(非扭曲)的聚合物膜,主要是聚碳酸酯,目前被经常地用于STN显示器的光学补偿,虽然由于缺少所需的扭曲角度以及延迟对温度的依赖,这些层不能完全补偿可寻址显示单元。扭曲角度以及拉伸聚合物补偿层对温度的依赖性可以通过使用扭曲的、温度匹配LCP补偿层来避免,例如在EP 0,868,680中所公开的那样,这在商业上是可用的,如TwistarTM。
在EP 0,584,943中公开了显示单元的扭曲角与光学延迟具有特定值的显示器。这些显示器包含一个单轴延展的聚合物膜的相位片(phaseplate),并且这些显示器是常黑显示器。
在EP 0,795,773中公开了常白显示器。这些显示器并不包含液晶聚合体而是包含两对夹在两层衬底之间的液晶单体,而这些液晶单体对中的一个通过施加电压而成为有源的(active)并且另一个为无源的(passive)。延迟单元的扭曲角与这些显示器的显示单元的扭曲角有很大的不同,并且/或者延迟单元的光学延迟(OR)在关闭状态(大大)多于显示单元OR的50%。这种显示器的对比度与理想对比度相差甚远,并且它对于整个波长范围不是恒定的。
但是,用一个均匀拉伸聚合物延迟器(retarder)来补偿的显示器和用带有与处于关闭状态的显示单元相同的延迟值以及相同但相反的扭曲角的补偿器来补偿的显示器都具有这样的缺点,它们对于高品质的常白(NW)显示器都不是很合适。这些NW显示器在其关闭状态是亮的,而在其打开状态是黑的。在某些应用中,NW显示器比NB显示器更受欢迎,例如在反射应用或者正模式显示器(=在亮背景上的暗字符)。如果使用非扭曲补偿膜,或者,如果使用与可寻址单元扭曲角相等但相反且延迟值相等的补偿层,所补偿的显示器的关闭状态亮度可以很高。但是,这些补偿显示器的一个严重缺点是,其打开状态不是很黑,这导致了低反差比(=亮状态的传输电平与暗状态的传输电平之比)。
发明内容
本发明要达到其获得一种在关闭状态中具有良好亮度并且在打开状态具有理想黑色的NW-STN显示器。因此建议使用微扭曲补偿层(被优化以补偿STN显示器的
打开状态)。这些微扭曲补偿层具有低光学延迟值,它远小于在关闭状态中的显示单元延迟值。更具体地,本发明涉及一种常白超扭曲向列(NW-STN)显示器,它包括一个超扭曲向列(STN)显示单元和一个补偿层,其特征在于补偿层是一种扭曲液晶聚合体并且其光学延迟(OR)是关闭状态中显示单元OR的10到50%,其中,补偿层扭曲角的绝对值在150°到10°之间,并且至少比STN显示单元的扭曲角绝对值小90°。
在一个优选实施例中,补偿层是扭曲液晶聚合体并且其光学延迟为关闭状态的显示单元OR的10到35%。
在另一个优选实施例中,补偿层扭曲角的绝对值等于或小于STN显示单元扭曲角的50%,并且更理想地,补偿层扭曲角的符号与STN显示单元扭曲角的符号相反。
如果需要在一个宽泛的温度范围上保持这些优点属性,可以为本发明的NW-STN显示器提供一个温度匹配补偿层,例如,就象在EP0,868,680中公开的温度匹配LCP补偿层那样,这在商业上是可用的,如TwistarTM,其中补偿层与STN显示单元是温度匹配的。
更具体地,NW-STN显示器包括一个具有高分子量液晶材料的补偿层,它具有在其Tg之上的向列相以及在工作温度下至少100Pa.s的动态粘度,从而使高分子量材料的Tc与STN显示单元的Tc之差处于-30℃到+30℃的范围中,最好是在-20℃到+20℃的范围中,更理想的是在-10℃到+10℃的范围中;并且高分子量液晶材料的Tg低于50℃。为了获得关闭状态中的白色显示,本发明的液晶显示器包括两个偏光器并且不包含单轴延展的聚合物膜。
本发明还涉及一种制造上述NW-STN显示器的方法,其中一个STN显示单元和一个补偿层被选择,以使补偿层的光学延迟为关闭状态的显示单元的光学延迟的10到50%,更理想的为关闭状态的显示单元的10%到35%,其中补偿层扭曲角的绝对值在150°到10°之间,并且至少比STN显示单元的扭曲角绝对值小90°。
本发明的NW-STN显示器被所提出的补偿层所补偿,并被安放于两个(几乎)交叉的偏光器之间,它显示非常黑的打开状态和非常的高反差比。如果温度匹配的、微扭曲的补偿层被使用的话,打开状态保持非常黑并且反差比保持非常高,即使提高温度。
具体实施方式
下面的示例进一步说明了本发明。
比较示例1
一个典型的NW-STN显示单元(R550nm=788nm,φ=+240°)被一个聚碳酸酯补偿层(非扭曲的,R550nm=566nm,顶部层压的,具有相对于显示单元输出导向器-75°的慢轴)所补偿,并被安放于两个层叠的高效偏光器(T1 ∥=31.7%;Tx=0.02%)之间,其吸收轴分别在显示器前部和后部上的-10°和105°上,该NW-STN显示单元在打开状态具有1.9%的发光率并具有15∶1的反差比(垂直入射的白光;没有反射)。
例1
如果与比较示例1相同的显示单元由具有R550nm=234nm,φ=-40°的补偿层来补偿,并且这个被补偿的显示器被安放于相同的(但现在是交叉的)偏光器之间的话,打开状态的发光率水平为0.2%并且反差比为120∶1(垂直入射的白光;没有反射)。
例2
如果与比较示例1中所用的显示单元相同的显示单元由具有R550 nm=258nm,φ=-46°的补偿层来补偿,并且这个被补偿的显示器被安放于相同的(但现在是交叉的)偏光器之间的话,打开状态的发光率水平为0.07%并且反差比为350∶1(垂直入射的白光;没有反射)。
例3
为了增加例1或2的被补偿的NW-STN显示器关闭状态的亮度,显示器的延迟值(以及补偿层的延迟值)可以被提高。
一个延迟值高于在比较示例1中所使用的延迟值20%的NW-STN显示单元(R550nm=946nm,φ=+240°)由R被提高20%到R550nm=310nm(φ=-46°)的补偿层来补偿并被安放于相同的(但现在是交叉的)偏光器之间。与例2的显示器相比,关闭状态的发光率水平将提高17%,而打开状态的发光率水平保持0.1%的低水平并且反差比保持250∶1的高水平(垂直入射的白光;没有反射)。
Claims (8)
1.一种常白超扭曲向列(NW-STN)显示器包括一个超扭曲向列(STN)显示单元和一个补偿层,其特征在于,补偿层是扭曲液晶聚合体并且具有关闭状态显示单元的光学延迟的10到50%的光学延迟(OR),其中补偿层的扭曲角绝对值在150°到10°之间并且至少比STN显示单元的扭曲角绝对值小90°。
2.权利要求1的NW-STN显示器,其中补偿层具有关闭状态显示单元光学延迟的10到35%的光学延迟。
3.权利要求1或2的NW-STN显示器,其中补偿层扭曲角的绝对值等于或小于STN显示单元扭曲角绝对值的50%。
4.权利要求1-3中任何一个的NW-STN显示器,其中补偿层扭曲角的符号与STN显示单元扭曲角的符号相反。
5.权利要求1-4中任何一个的NW-STN显示器,其中补偿层与STN显示单元是温度匹配的。
6.权利要求5的NW-STN显示器,其中补偿层包括高分子量液晶材料,在其Tg之上具有向列相并且在工作温度上具有至少为100Pa.S的动态粘度,从而使高分子量材料的Tc与STN显示单元的Tc之差处于-30℃到+30℃的范围中,最好是在-20℃到+20℃的范围中,更理想的是在-10℃到+10℃的范围中;并且高分子量液晶材料的Tg低于50℃。
