发明领域
本发明涉及到电视、电视信号接收机、视频处理设备和/或电视信号，更具体地说，涉及到在电视、电视信号接收机和/或显示器上根据次要输入信号显示实时辅助信息的方法和设备。
发明背景
诸如ESPN、CNN和CNBC等某些电视频道会在播送其节目的同时显示体育比分和股票行情。例如，其它广播电台将在播放另一比赛的同时显示大学足球赛的比分。然而，个人必须调谐到这些特殊信道之一才可看到这些更新。此外，用户无法控制此信息显示的频率或时间。
在电视频道内提供诸如隐含字幕和图文电视信息等辅助信息已为人熟知。同样，为电子节目指南提供辅助信息也为人熟知。StarSightTelecast，Inc.(StarSight)具有一种名为StarSightNEWS(新闻、娱乐、天气、体育)服务的功能，该功能是其电子节目指南的一部分。该功能使用户可手动激活全屏显示以访问新闻和体育报导、比分和其它信息。StarSightNEWS服务功能被用户激活后，会自动使视频空白，使音频静音，并将电视的调谐器调到StarSight数据提供商信道(例如PBS)。然而，在激活该功能时，用户无法观看任何其它信道或节目。
然而，目前尚无系统允许用户观看一个电视节目并监控与不相关主题有关的信息。在许多情况下，需要接收不是当前节目或信道所提供的最新信息。这样，用户在观看电视信号装置上的任何节目或信道时，由于无法通过电视或诸如录像机、电缆盒等(电视信号装置)其它电视接收装置获得最新的体育比分、新闻摘要、股票行情或其它信息，因而先有技术存在缺陷。
发明摘要
本发明涉及到在用户已选择主信源(即另一信道)的同时显示来自次要信源或输入信号的实时辅助信息的系统。可选择的辅助信息与主信源无关。
一种形式下，本发明是显示用户选定信息的方法。所述方法包括以下步骤：(a)将从第一信源接收到的视频信号提供给显示装置；(b)选择要接收的信息类型；(c)从第二信源接收选定信息；以及(d)将来自第二信源的选定信息提供给显示装置，以便在显示来自第一信源的视频信号的同时显示。
另一种形式下，本发明是视频处理电视设备。视频处理电视设备包括：接收节目的第一装置；选择要接收的信息类型的装置；接收选定信息的第二装置；显示节目的装置；以及在显示节目期间显示选定信息的装置。
因此，本发明允许观众在显示器上自动显示可选择的信息，而不管当前观看的节目或信道如何。信息可以根据用户可选择的时间表以及在显示屏的一部分内显示，而不会对当前节目/信道的音频和/或视频产生实质干扰。用户也可以通过屏幕菜单选择要显示的信息类别。这可以通过提供次要信道、节目或信号所承载的辅助信息/数据内的信息或者作为辅助信息/数据来提供信息而实现。
本发明可与多种类型的消费类电子装置配合使用，比如电视(TV)、电视信号接收机、机顶盒、电缆盒、录像机、直播卫星接收机、节目指南机顶盒、转换器、个人计算机、数字视盘(DVD)播放器、web浏览器及组合个人计算机电视(PC/TV)。
在常规间隔操作模式中，响应计时器事件而显示信息；可能监视显示装置的内部时钟。在随事件发生操作模式中，选定的辅助信息仅在其已改变或是新信息时才显示。这通过在数据包内设置相关标志以便识别和修改选定辅助信息的状态而实现。在持续模式中，信息在正观看的特定节目上持续显示。在用户选择要显示的辅助信息的信息类型之前或之后，可以从第二信源中抽取辅助信息。

本发明的详细说明
参照图1，其中表示出可实现本发明原理的系统的框图，该系统通常标记为10。系统10包括由信号处理设备14接收的输入信号12。信号处理设备14连接到显示器16，显示器可展现或显示来自信号处理设备14的视频和其它信息。信号处理设备14如下所述对信号12进行处理。
信号12最好是承载多个信道上的许多广播节目的电视信号。信号12可以是模拟、数字信号或是模拟和数字数据/信息的组合，并可通过诸如有线电视(CATV)、地面广播、卫星广播、电子网络(例如，因特网)及诸如此类的任何已知传输媒体提供给信号处理设备14。广播节目一般由音频和视频组成，但可以只是音频或只是视频。根据本发明的一个方面，信号12的至少一个信道或节目带有辅助信息/数据。根据本发明的另一方面，信号12可以是来自两个或更多分开的信源的复合信号。这种情况下，每个信源提供至少一个信道或节目，复合信号中一个信号的一个信道或节目带有辅助信息/数据。

在信号12为数字电视信号的情况下，数字电视包括数字数据流，该数据流可由数字电视或诸如高清晰度电视(HDTV)或标准定义数字电视等电视信号装置接收。辅助信息可作为数字电视信号等的数字数据流的一部分来包括。这种情况下，数据流将包括适当的标题和辅助信息的其它标识符。
应可理解，信号12可由单个提供商或者由不同或多个提供商提供。在单个提供商的情况下，信号12的第一信道传送节目(即视频和/或音频)，而信号12的第二信道至少传送辅助信息并且也可包括节目。在信号12是电视信号的情况下，一般有多个信道严格地传送广播节目，而单个信道至少传送辅助信息。辅助信息或数据可与其它信息和/或数据组合，或者与广播节目组合。然而，信号12最好包括至少两个信道，一个传送广播节目，另一个至少传送辅助信息。
应当理解，信号12可来自单个信源以及不同的信源。在来自不同的信源时，一个信源可提供第一信号，该信号具有用于在显示器16上显示的广播节目，而另一信源可提供第二信号，该信号至少具有辅助数据。第二信号可包括除辅助数据外的广播节目等。因此，信号12可作为地面广播、卫星广播、CATV传输、因特网或者通过如本文所述的能够提供广播节目和辅助信息的任何其它信源发出。
另外，辅助信息可包括命令，通知接收装置数据要用于当前用途，和/或通知接收装置特定的数据段是新的或修改的数据(例如，更新的比分)。借助于此数据，如果用户的选择是立即显示信息，则接收装置将立即显示信息。
信号处理设备14包括适当的电路/逻辑以接收信号12并对其执行不同的处理。具体地说，信号处理设备14可接收信号12，并向显示器16提供一个(第一)信道的广播节目等以及来自另一(第二)信道的选定辅助信息。辅助信息/数据可以是文本、图形或视频图像。因此，信号处理设备14能够从信号12中分离两个信道，处理一个信道以获得其输入显示器16的广播节目，以及从另一信道中抽取或获得辅助信息以获得其辅助信息并将选定的辅助信息提供给显示器16。用户能够选择要显示的辅助信息的类型和/或类别，而不是只象隐含字幕一样显示所有辅助信息，并且还可为显示器选择频率时间表。虽然辅助信息最好包括关于多个主题(例如，体育比分、股票、新闻等等)的数据，但一般只选择一部分辅助信息在显示器16上显示。
因此，辅助信息的显示是在用户可选择的基础上进行的。所选辅助信息可按如下方式显示：(1)持续显示；(2)按预定有规律的间隔显示；或者(3)在(定义的)事件发生时或者实时显示或者在存储器中以提供短的延迟时间。应当理解，在用户从辅助信息中选择信息类型之前或之后，可实现辅助信息和/或第二信源信号中的辅助信息类型的抽取。视辅助信息是在用户选择信息之前或之后抽取而定，存储器中可存储不同的辅助信息量。
参照图2，其中表示了可实现本发明原理的另一系统的框图，该系统通常标记为20。系统20包括具有与信号12相同特征的信号22、信号处理设备24、录像机26(或类似装置)以及显示器28。系统20可接收信号22并向显示器28提供节目以及选定的辅助信息。
图2中，信号处理设备24可接收信号22的第一信道，并将由此传送的广播节目提供给显示器28，或者从信号22的第二信道/信号中获得/抽取辅助信息，而录像机26可执行信号处理设备24未实现的其它操作。录像机26代表如本文所述的可接收信号并处理信号和任何辅助信息的任何装置。应当理解，上文中术语“信号”可指不止一种信号和/或包括具有几个信道的信号。
因此，图2说明在信号处理设备24不能接收两个信道或信号时本发明的原理，其中一个信道传送节目，另一信道传送辅助信息。更具体地说，信号处理设备24不具有两个调谐器或可接收适当信道/信号并处理它们的其它装置，另一装置(即录像机)必需提供另一调谐器和处理。两个装置之一必须能够在其中另一装置接收节目时获得/抽取辅助信息。
参照图3，其中表示图1所示的信号处理设备14和显示器16的详细视图。应当理解，与本发明原理相符，信号处理设备14和显示器16可如图1和图2所示分开，也可如虚线30所示结合在一起。信号处理设备14和显示器16无论配置如何，其功能和操作均如本文所述。
信号处理设备14包括调谐部分32，该部分可调谐到输入信号12的不同信道以便进一步处理。这包括调谐到具有要观看的广播节目的信道，以及调谐到具有除节目50外要选择并在显示器16上显示的辅助信息的信道。信号处理设备14还包括处理单元38、存储器40、屏幕显示(OSD)生成器42、辅助信息解析器44和遥控信号接收器46。

调谐部分32也包括第二调谐器36(调谐器B)，该调谐器可调谐到提供辅助信息的信号12的信道。这可由信号处理设备14自动完成，或者对用户/观众选择遥控器48上适当的按钮/按键49(或类似的选择方式)作出响应。在任何情况下，调谐到辅助信息信道并将其输入到辅助信息解析器44，该解析器可抽取或获得该信道/信号携带的辅助信息。除其它类型的信息外，辅助信息可由信道提供。在模拟信号的情况下，辅助信息解析器可以是VBI解析器，辅助信息包含在VBI中。在数字信号的情况下，辅助信息解析器可以是能够从数字数据流中抽取辅助信息的数字处理单元。在两种情况下，最好是辅助信息内具有标题和其它标识标记。辅助信息的抽取在处理单元38的帮助下完成。辅助信息抽取的时间选择可与从整个辅助信息中选择辅助信息类型无关，或者抽取的时间选择可取决于选择过程。
在一种情况下，如果用户在进行辅助信息的任何抽取和存储之前选择了信息的类型和显示频率，则只有所选的辅助信息类型可被抽取并存储在存储器40中。或者，可抽取并存储所有的辅助信息，但只可显示选定类型的信息。选定类型的辅助信息可能无法立即显示。视信号内发送的辅助信息的数据速率而定，选定类型的辅助信息可在任何地方花费从几分钟到几小时的时间以收集和显示特定信息。
如果用户在抽取并存储辅助信息后选择信息类型和显示频率，则整个(所有可能)辅助信息量会从信号中抽出并存储在存储器中。一旦用户选择要显示的信息类型和显示频率，则信息会从存储器中检索以便显示在屏幕上。
因此，多种信息和辅助信息可存储在存储器中，准备在显示器16上显示。用户允许时，除节目50外在显示器16上辅助信息的显示最好是自动的。这可以通过遥控器48上适当的按键49实现。根据本发明的一个方面，用户能够选择要在显示器16上显示的辅助信息类型和/或类别。同样，用户/观众可选择所选定信息的显示频率。
辅助数据可在接收时连续存储在存储器中，即使用户未启用此功能也一样。若存储在存储器中，新信息可改写过时的信息。随着新信息发送，会刷新辅助信息的显示。数据流可区别重复项目和新项目。
一种形式下，用户/观众能够通过如OSD生成器42提供的屏幕显示，从整个辅助信息量中选择要自动显示在显示器上的不同类型和/或类别的信息。现在参照图4，该图表示的显示器16具有示例屏幕菜单60，以便选择需要显示的辅助信息的类型以及所选辅助信息的显示频率。信息的类型/类别的选择使用户/观众可根据显示频率选择将在显示器16上显示的信息类型。用户/观众可选择单一类型的信息或者多种信息。
用户/观众也可以从菜单60中选择所选定类型的辅助信息的显示频率。辅助信息52(参见图3)最好是自动显示在显示器16上。通过实时提供的辅助信息的更新，可持续显示辅助信息。辅助信息可按不同的可选间隔(例如，每十五分钟)或者根据事件的发生(例如，体育项目的比分改变，突发新闻故事)显示。一旦用户/观众设置了各种参数，则除在观看的节目50外，选定的辅助信息会提供给显示器16(参见图3)。系统根据输入的辅助信息状态和频率选择，实时更新辅助信息。因此，辅助信息可储存在存储器中以便提供此类更新。当频率被选择为随事件发生时，会检查辅助信息信号或数据流中的一个或多个标识符，以便确定特定的辅助信息是否已改变或者是否是新信息而需要显示。
再参照图3，存储器40也可存储由处理单元38执行的程序指令(例如，软件)，以便提供本文所述的多种特征和功能。若必要，存储器40也可以暂时存储信息。因此，存储器40可以是RAM、ROM或者可以所述方式操作的其它存储器。
操作
参照图5A，现在描述根据本文所述原理的本发明的操作方式。图5A表示可采用本发明原理的一般方式的流程图，该流程图通常标记为70。如上所述，最初是在步骤72收到信号。在步骤74，用户/观众或信号处理设备允许由此调谐到节目以便观看(即传送节目的信号的信道)。同样，在步骤76，信号处理设备调谐到辅助信息信道并抽取辅助信息。在步骤78，节目和辅助信息随后自动提供给显示器。

如果希望在打开信号处理设备时可显示相同的辅助信息，则可把选定的选项存储在存储器中的用户/观众简档中。或者，此类辅助信息选择可能需要在信号处理设备断电之后进行。
应当理解，本发明允许在显示器上自动显示除节目之外并且与节目内容无关的、关于任何主题、类别或类型(假定由辅助信息服务提供)的信息。这样，用户/观众可以控制监视数据的时间和类型。

Claims (20)

1.一种显示用户选定信息的方法，包括以下步骤：
提供从第一信源接收的用于显示的视频信息；
从第二信源接收选定信息；以及
当所述视频信息正在显示时，提供用于显示的所述选定信息，其中，用一个决定何时显示所述选定信息的显示参数的用户可变频率来控制所述选定信息的显示。
2.如权利要求1所述的方法，其特征在于，从关于多种主题的信息类型中选定所述选定信息。
3.如权利要求1所述的方法，其特征在于还包括以下步骤：
自动显示所述选定信息而不管所述视频的内容如何。
4.如权利要求3所述的方法，其特征在于还包括以下步骤：
选择用于确定自动显示所述选定信息的显示频率的时间表，其中，
所述时间表是用户可以改变的，和
所述时间表代表用户可选择的时间间隔，以确定在显示所述选定信息期间的时间间隔。
5.如权利要求4所述的方法，其特征在于，选择时间表的所述步骤包括以下步骤：
在显示以下选项的频率之间选择：(i)持续显示所述选定类型的接收信息；(ii)定期显示所述选定类型的接收信息；以及(iii)在发生状态改变时显示所述选定类型的接收信息。
6.如权利要求5所述的方法，其特征在于，在发生状态改变时，在显示选项的频率之间选择的所述步骤包括以下步骤：
选择在事件改变时和在事件为新事件时其中至少一种。
7.如权利要求2所述的方法，其特征在于还包括从多种主题中选择一种类型的接收信息的所述步骤包括以下步骤：
提供选择菜单的屏幕显示。
8.如权利要求2所述的方法，其特征在于，自动显示所述选定类型的信息的所述步骤包括以下步骤：
除了在所述显示装置上显示来自所述第一信源的所述视频外，还在所述显示装置上显示的图像内显示所述选定类型的信息。
9.一种视频处理电视设备，它包括：
用于接收节目的第一装置；
用于选择要接收的信息的装置；
用于接收所述选定信息的第二装置；
用于显示所述节目的装置；以及
用于在显示所述节目期间显示所述选定信息的装置，其中，根据一个决定何时显示所述选定信息的显示参数的用户可变频率来显示所述选定信息。
10.如权利要求9所述的设备，其特征在于，用于显示所述选定信息的所述装置包括用于自动显示所述选定信息而不管所述节目内容如何的装置。
11.如权利要求9所述的设备，其特征在于，用于选择要接收的一种类型的信息的所述装置包括用于从关于多种主题的信息中选择一种类型的信息的装置。
12.如权利要求9所述的设备，其特征在于还包括：
用于选择所述选定信息的显示频率的装置。
13.如权利要求12所述的设备，其特征在于，用于选择所述选定信息在所述用于显示的装置上显示的频率的所述装置包括：
用于选择(i)持续显示所述选定信息；(ii)定期显示所述选定信息；以及(iii)在发生状态改变时显示所述选定信息其中之一的装置。
14.如权利要求13所述的设备，其特征在于，所述用于选择(i)持续显示所述选定信息；(ii)定期显示所述选定信息；以及(iii)在发生状态改变时显示所述选定信息其中之一的装置包括在选择在发生状态改变时显示所述选定信息的情况下、选择(a)在事件改变时和(b)在事件为新事件时其中至少一种的装置。
15.如权利要求9所述的设备，其特征在于还包括：
用于生成屏幕显示菜单以便允许用户选择要接收的信息类型的装置。
16.如权利要求9所述的设备，其特征在于还包括：
除了显示所述节目外、还在用于显示图像的所述装置上显示的图像内显示所述选定信息的装置。
17.一种电视信号接收设备，它包括：
处理单元；
与所述处理单元通信并且可从第一信源接收节目的第一调谐器；
与所述处理单元通信并且可从第二信源接收关于多种主题的辅助信息的第二调谐器；
与所述处理单元和所述第二调谐器通信并且可从所述第二信源抽取所述辅助信息的辅助信息解析器；
从所述多种主题中选择要显示的一种类型的辅助信息的装置；以及
与所述处理单元、所述第一调谐器和所述第二调谐器通信的显示器；
其中所述处理单元可在所述显示器上显示所述节目并且同时在所述显示器上显示所述选定类型的辅助信息而不管所述节目内容如何，其中，用一个决定何时显示所述辅助信息的的频率的显示参数的用户可变频率来控制所述辅助信息的显示。
18.如权利要求17所述的电视信号接收设备，其特征在于还包括：
屏幕显示生成器，它与所述处理单元和所述显示器通信，并且可提供屏幕菜单以允许用户选择辅助信息的类型。
19.如权利要求17所述的电视信号接收设备，其特征在于还包括：
用于选择作为可变时间间隔的所述显示参数的用户可变频率，所述可变时间间隔确定在显示所述辅助信息期间的时间长度。
20.如权利要求17所述的电视信号接收设备，其特征在于，除了显示所述节目外，所述处理单元还可在所述显示器上显示的图像之内显示所述选定类型的辅助信息。
