Description
Technical Field
The invention relates to the technical field of separation and collection of natural products, in particular to a device and a method for separating natural products.
Background
Existing methods for the isolation of natural products employ distillation, i.e. in situ evaporation of the desired compound and/or distillation using organic solvents. One commonly used distillation is vacuum microwave water distillation (VMHD), which involves subjecting the bioproduct to microwaves under vacuum, typically to separate essential oils from the bioproduct. The combined effect of the selective microwave heating and the vacuum pressure in the extraction chamber causes the evaporation of the essential oil together with the biological water present in the extracted biological product, the steam then being concentrated and collected. One limitation of this process is that it allows only distillable compounds, in particular essential oils, to be isolated. Vacuum microwave water distillation (VMHD) is therefore limited in the choice of solvent, the ease of the process and the extracts obtainable by these processes.
