Description

Method and apparatus for changing oil
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for gear system oil change and flushing.
Background
Gear systems are located in many types of plant machinery and require periodic replacement of gear oil during their service life. This is typically done by manual operations, including draining used gear oil from the machine into an empty oil drum and adding new gear oil from another oil drum. Contamination problems may occur during the transfer of fresh oil from the oil drum to the gear system.
This is further complicated when it is necessary to change the oil at a location which is difficult to access, for example at an elevated height, for example in an overhead crane, a harbour machinery or a generator air cooling unit. Lifting oil drums and other equipment to the requisite height and operating in the often space-limited locations required for manual oil changes requires additional health, safety, security, environmental (HSSE) considerations (personnel safety, risk of spillage) and is a time consuming and inefficient process.
It is therefore highly desirable to develop a method and apparatus for performing such a procedure without the need to move the oil drum to the gear system.
Disclosure of Invention
The present invention therefore provides an apparatus suitable for gear-system oil changes at inaccessible locations, such as at elevated elevations, the apparatus comprising at least two pumps, comprising: a first pump connected via a first outlet connection hose to an outlet connection device configured to be securably connectable to an outlet of a gear system for a plant machine; the pump is also connected to a second outlet connection hose, which can be connected to a waste oil container; and a second pump connected via a first inlet connection hose to an inlet connection, which may be firmly connected to an inlet of the gear system; the pump is also connected to a second inlet connection hose, which can be connected to a new oil container;
the at least two pumps are disposed within the equipment frame.
The invention also provides a method for gear-system oil change at a location that is difficult to access, wherein a first pump of the apparatus is connected to an outlet of the gear system via a first outlet connection hose and an outlet connection; the first pump is started; and the oil present in the gear system is evacuated to a waste oil container via the first pump and the second outlet connection hose;
the second pump is connected to the inlet of the gear system via a first inlet connection hose and an inlet connection; the second pump is started and fresh oil is injected from the oil drum into the gear system via the second inlet connection hose and the second pump.

Detailed Description
The present inventors have developed innovative apparatus and methods to overcome the difficulty of changing oil in gear systems located in inaccessible locations, such as at elevated elevations. The apparatus and method have the benefit of functioning in a space-limited location, further reducing HSSE risk and increasing the efficiency of maintenance operations.
The apparatus is suitable for oil change on any compatible gear system that can be connected to a pump system via an outlet and an inlet.
The apparatus and method of the present invention are particularly suitable for oil changes at elevated heights (e.g. above 2 meters above ground level) and in spatially restricted locations. Transferring oil drums containing new and used oils to and from these locations and handling the oil drums in situ is challenging and involves increased HSSE risks, such as increased risk of spilling, dropping and dropping equipment. As used herein, 'ground level' refers to a level at which a solid surface of a machine can be easily positioned and transported. The 'ground level' may correspond to the ground level or to a higher or lower level above said location.
The pump in the apparatus is arranged within the apparatus frame. The device may be constructed of any suitable material. The material is preferably strong, light and corrosion resistant. Stainless steel and aluminum are examples of suitable materials for the device frame.
The first and second pumps are suitably firmly fixed to the equipment frame by known methods, such as welding or using bolts.
The equipment frame is preferably moved so that it can be moved into position at ground level prior to use. Preferably, the apparatus frame is equipped with wheels so that it can be pushed or pulled to a desired position. It is particularly preferred that the wheels are fitted with a locking mechanism so that the device can be securely fixed in the desired position.
The pump may be any suitable pumping device used in the art that is capable of delivering large quantities of both fresh and used oil. A gear pump may be suitably used. Typically, both pumps are capable of operating at pressures in the range of 0.5MPa to 10MPa and flow rates in the range of 5 to 50 liters/minute.
The first pump is connected to the outlet connection via a first outlet connection hose. The second pump is connected to the inlet connection via a first inlet connection hose.
The first outlet connection hose and the first inlet connection hose are generally of flexible construction allowing them to be manipulated in the following manner: the outlet connection is aligned with an outlet of the gear system and the inlet connection is aligned with an inlet of the gear system.
The second outlet connection hose and the second inlet connection hose are also typically of a flexible construction allowing them to be manipulated in alignment with the vat of fresh and waste oil.
Suitable materials for constructing the first outlet connection hose and the first inlet connection hose include any material that is resistant to oil and has a strength to withstand the pressures and distances required for the hoses. An example of a suitable material is an oil resistant reinforced rubber tube.
Alternatively, the first and second outlet connection hoses and the first and second inlet connection hoses may be lengthened due to the construction material or by further adding multiple lengths of connection hoses between the pump and the outlet and/or inlet connections and/or the waste and fresh oil containers.
The second outlet connection hose and the second inlet connection hose must have a length such as to reach the used oil and the new oil containers, respectively, either initially or after an extension. The used and fresh oil containers are preferably kept at ground level.
The first outlet connection hose and the first inlet connection hose must have a length that is able to reach the gear system from the ground level equipment, either initially or after an extension.
Preferably, a valve is provided in the connecting hose, allowing the flow of oil through the hose to be controlled by the operator. The valve may be manually operated, electrically operated, or a combination of both.
It is also preferred that the filter system is provided in the second inlet connection hose. This may ensure that any particulate matter is removed from the fresh oil before the fresh oil is provided to the gear system.
In a preferred embodiment, one or more valves within the connection hose may also serve as connectors to allow further use of hose sections to extend the connection hose between each pump and its associated connection device and/or oil container. This allows for more flexibility in the length of the connection hose used in the apparatus and method. The unused hose section can be stored separately from the rest of the apparatus when not in use, for example on a roller. Preferably the rollers are also fitted with wheels to allow all components of the apparatus to be located in a convenient position prior to use.
The outlet and inlet connection means usually comprise connection valves and may be equipped with means for opening and closing the connections to further prevent leakage. The outlet and inlet connection means may take the form of a quick release coupling or threaded body, with male or female threads depending on the outlet and inlet connections.
In a method for performing an oil change in a gear system, a connecting device is manoeuvred into the gear system and securely connected to an outlet and an inlet of the gear system.
The first pump is connected to the outlet of the gear system via a first outlet connection hose and an outlet connection, and is connected to the waste oil container via a second outlet connection hose. The second pump is connected via a first inlet connection hose to an inlet of the gear system and via a second inlet connection hose to a fresh oil container, for example a bucket of oil containing fresh oil.
The oil present in the gear system is evacuated to a container for waste oil via a first pump and a second outlet connection hose. The first pump may then be deactivated.
The second pump is activated as soon as the oil present in the gear system is drained to the waste oil container and the first pump is deactivated. Fresh oil is filled from the oil drum into the gear system via a second inlet connection hose and a second pump.
Optionally, after draining the gear system, a flushing step of the gear system may be performed, wherein a flushing oil is provided via the second pump, and then removed via the first pump, after which new oil is filled into the gear system.
The amount of oil pumped into and out of the gear system can be controlled by a control unit on the device. The control unit may be integrated into the device or connected to the device as an additional element. Alternatively, the amount of oil that needs to be pumped into and out of the gear system may be monitored by looking at an oil gauge on the gear system.
