Description

Method and device for realizing automatic threshold value configuration function of IPMI power sensor
Technical Field
The present invention relates to the field of computer technologies, and in particular, to a method and an apparatus for implementing an automatic threshold configuration function of an IPMI power sensor.
Background
The BMC (Baseboard Management Controller, management chip on the server) generally provides a sensor for monitoring Power Supply Unit (PSU) Power consumption or total Power consumption. Such sensors can be used to observe real-time power consumption, but also to issue event alerts or trigger power limitation strategies when power consumption exceeds rated power.
In addition to the recording of the Sensor setting Data, the design method includes Data such as the type of the Sensor, whether a trigger event is present, and a trigger event condition, etc., that is, a research and development engineer writes a trigger condition (threshold) of a Sensor corresponding to a system into an SDR file (or a hardcode into a program) when developing a design product. This conventional implementation may have the following disadvantages when used in a power consumption type sensor:
a. static threshold settings may not be suitable for some product line configurations, and development costs are high. For example:
the A server product line originally is configured with a plurality of display cards with large power consumption, so a PSU with high rated power of 2200 watts is configured. The development engineer also configures the sensor threshold for the power consumption when developing the a product, and the configuration may be that the BMC issues an alarm and executes a power limitation policy when the power consumption reaches 2200 watts. If a new product B wants to continue all the designs of the server A but remove the high-power-consumption display card and replace the high-power-consumption display card with a low-power-consumption display card, the product B does not need to use the high-watt PSU and only needs to use the low-cost low-rated-output 1100-watt PSU. The problem arises here that the original sensor threshold setting is obviously not applicable to the new configuration of the product B, and the engineer must modify the power consumption sensor threshold for the product B again — that is, even if the board is shared, the BMC firmware needs to be modified to meet the new configuration. Vice versa, if the B product adds more graphics cards with larger power consumption, the PSU with higher power rating is also needed. If the BMC firmware does not modify the power consumption sensor threshold, an alarm may be triggered and a power consumption limit executed when the power consumption reaches 2200 watts.
b. Some PSUs output different power ratings depending on the input power. For example, if the PSU is plugged into a 220V power supply, the maximum rated output of the PSU would be 2200 watts. While with the PSU plugged into a 110V supply, the maximum rated output of the PSU would be 1100 watts. This type of PSU may burn out beyond the rated power if a static threshold configuration is used.
PSUs are typically dynamically swappable. If the maintenance personnel misuse the PSUs with different rated power consumption without paying attention, the problem of burning out or failure of the threshold value of the PSU can be caused.
