Also known as chelating ligands (chelating groups), chelating groups (chelating groups) or polydentate ligands (ligands). The ligand has two or more coordinating atoms and forms a chelate ring with a central atom (or ion). The chelating agent has higher stability than non-chelating coordination compound with similar composition and structure due to the ring formation of the chelating agent. Chelating agents are mostly organic ligands. The chelating agents found to date are up to fourteen teeth. The coordinating atoms in the chelating agent are most commonly oxygen and nitrogen, followed by sulfur, and also phosphorus, arsenic, etc. This class of compounds is described by "chelators" because the molecular structure is much like the two large "clamps" of a "crab" that clamp a metal atom or ion.
