Abstract
提供一种具有能够保持偏振方向地使径向偏振光或者角向偏振光传播的光波导区域的光学元件。光学元件具有:树脂层;以及光波导区域,其形成于树脂层,光在树脂层的长度方向上被导波,在光波导区域,液晶分子在与长度方向垂直的截面呈大致放射状地取向,光波导区域的折射率比树脂层的折射率大。

技术领域
本发明涉及一种具有树脂层和形成于树脂层内的光波导区域的光学元件。
背景技术
专利文献1记载有一种光纤系统,其对于具有将液晶填充于多孔光纤的孔中的液晶填充光纤的光纤,通过对所填充的液晶施加磁场以改变液晶的取向状态,来控制光传输特性。
非专利文献1记载有一种毛细管光纤(capillary optical fiber),其具有位于通气孔的周围的环状的高折射率的光学纤芯、低折射率的光学包层、以及高折射率的被覆层。

发明内容
由树脂材料制作的现有的光波导管具有各向同性、或者仅在确定的一个方向取向的各向异性。因此,在这样的光波导管中,无法保持偏振方向地使径向偏振光或者角向偏振光传播。在此所谓的径向偏振光是指,偏振方向在与前进方向垂直的面内沿径向呈放射状分布的光。另外,角向偏振光是指,偏振方向在与前进方向垂直的面内沿周向分布的光。
光波导管具有取向为放射状的结构的话,则能够应对径向偏振光或者角向偏振光,但难以简单地制造这样的光波导管。因此,本发明的目的在于,提供一种具有能够保持偏振方向地使径向偏振光或者角向偏振光传播的光波导区域的光学元件。
一种光学元件,其特征在于,具有:树脂层;以及光波导区域,其形成于树脂层内,光在树脂层的长度方向上被波导,在光波导区域中,液晶分子在与长度方向垂直的截面呈大致放射状地取向,光波导区域的折射率比树脂层的折射率大。
在上述的光学元件中优选为,还具有形成于树脂层内的、具有大致圆形的截面的管状的空间,光波导区域以与管状的空间接触的形态形成,在光波导区域中,液晶分子沿大致圆形的截面的径向呈大致放射状地取向。
采用上述的光学元件的话,能够保持偏振方向地使径向偏振光或者角向偏振光传播。

具体实施方式
以下,参照附图对光学元件进行详细说明。但是,本发明的技术范围不限于这些实施形态,需要留意权利要求书中记载的发明和与其均等的发明所涉及的点。
图1是光学元件10的示意图。光学元件10具有树脂层12,作为光波导区域的包层部分。在光学元件10中,使用丙烯酸树脂,作为树脂层12。在树脂层12的内部形成有具有大致圆形的截面的空腔14,该空腔14为管状的空间。“大致圆形”是指,没有矩形那样尖的部分也没有凹坑,最大径和最小径之差相对于最大径的比率例如为10%以下的形状。
又,光学元件10具有形成于与空腔14接触的部分(边界附近)的树脂层12内的液晶区域15,作为光波导区域的芯部分。在光学元件10中,使用P型液晶,作为液晶。在液晶区域15中,液晶分子沿具有大致圆形的截面的空腔14的径向呈大致放射状取向。在图1中,通过以空腔14为中心在大致圆形的截面的径向上呈大致放射状配置的大量椭圆15A,表示该液晶分子的取向。“大致放射状”是指,整体来看,从中心的空腔14向树脂层12的外侧伸展的状态。因此,对于液晶区域15的整体,液晶分子不一定非要以严密的放射状取向。
光学元件10的液晶区域15作为光波导区域发挥作用,能够在液晶区域15内使光传播。由于液晶区域15具有比树脂层12大的折射率,因此在树脂层12和液晶区域15之间能产生折射率的差。因此,光入射至液晶区域15内时,以小的入射角自液晶区域15向其外侧的树脂层12的光在液晶区域15和树脂层12的边界面16全反射。
同样地,由于液晶区域15具有比内侧的空腔14大的折射率,因此在空腔14和液晶区域15之间能产生折射率的差。因此,以小的入射角自液晶区域15向其内侧的空腔14的光在液晶区域15和空腔14的边界面全反射。这样,由于光在液晶区域15内传播(参照图1的箭头A),因此光学元件10能够将光封闭于液晶区域15内。
实际上,由于在液晶区域15存在液晶分子的浓度梯度,因此随着自与空腔14的边界面沿径向远离,折射率也降低。由于具有该折射率的分布,光学元件10尤其能够作为GI(graded-index(渐变折射率))型波导使用。
另外,为了便于说明,图1示出树脂层12和液晶区域15的边界面16,但认为该边界面16实际并没有被明确确定。然而,在液晶区域15传播的光在到达液晶区域15的外侧的折射率更小的区域前反射,并在液晶区域15内传播。
图2的(A)~(C)是用于说明光学元件10的制造方法的示意图。图3是示出光学元件10的制造方法的流程图。使用图1~图3,对本制造方法的各工序进行说明。
首先,如图2的(A)所示,准备基板1,在基板1上形成未固化的固化性树脂2的层(S1)。该层相当于图1的树脂层12。在未固化的状态下,固化性树脂2具有流动性,因此准备包围周围的框体(未图示),在其内部注入固化性树脂2。在此,作为固化性树脂2,使用作为紫外线固化树脂的丙烯酸树脂。然而,也可以使用热固化性树脂,作为固化性树脂2。另外,图1的空腔14的直径为数百μm左右时,固化性树脂2的厚度的d为1000μm左右即可。
随后,将能够注入液晶的针(针体)3插入固化性树脂2中(S2)。针3具有如注射针那样中空的、且朝顶端变尖的形状,在顶端具有开口部(未图示)。此时,插入针3的深度例如为固化性树脂2的厚度d的一半左右。另外,也可以使用其开口部被设置于顶端附近的侧面的针。
接下来,如图2的(B)所示,边使针3移动,边通过针3将液晶4呈管状注入固化性树脂2中(S3)。在此,使用P型液晶,作为液晶4。例如,想形成直线状的流路的情况下,沿图2的(B)中示出的X方向,使针3平行移动。并且,通过边使针3移动,边从针3的上部施加压力,从针3的顶端的开口部向固化性树脂2的层内注入液晶4。在固化性树脂2的层内,由于表面张力的作用,液晶4的与X方向垂直的截面变为大致圆形。
注入液晶4结束后,从固化性树脂2内拔出针3(S4)。此时,由于固化性树脂2还没有硬化,一拔出针3,由于针3而在固化性树脂2上造成的孔闭合。由此,液晶4被封闭于固化性树脂2中,成为被配置为管状的状态。
并且,通过紫外线照射,使固化性树脂2固化,将液晶4封闭于固化性树脂2内。由此,如图2的(C)所示,将液晶4存在的部分作为液晶的流路4A(S5)。使用热固化性树脂作为固化性树脂2的情况下,通过加热使固化性树脂2固化。这样,在被注入有液晶4的管状的区域形成截面为大致圆形的流路4A。
使固化性树脂2固化前,能够发生液晶4向固化性树脂2内的渗入,但刚刚固化后,液晶4残留在流路4A内。因此,以该状态放置一定时间,使液晶4向固化性树脂2的层内的渗入完成(S6)。在时间经过的同时,在液晶4和固化性树脂2的边界面,液晶4依据浓度梯度向树脂内扩散,如图1所示,液晶分子取向为该扩散方向。通过固化,树脂的链被固定,液晶分子进入其间,由此得到在流路4A的周围液晶分子取向为大致放射状的区域(图1的液晶区域15)。液晶4从流路4A中消失时,则流路4A的区域变为图1的空腔14。
液晶4被完全封闭于固化性树脂2内的话,则根据液晶4的种类的不同,至发生向树脂内的渗入为止,要花费数日左右的时间。另一方面,由针3产生的孔没有闭合而一直处于打开的情况下、或者有意在固化性树脂2的层上打开孔而使液晶4成为与外部空气接触的状态的情况下,液晶4更快地渗入树脂内。
在经过一定时间后液晶4仍残留在流路4A内的情况下,切除固化性树脂2的一部分,抽出被封闭于固化性树脂2内的液晶4。即使在流路4A已为空腔的情况下,也要切除固化性树脂2的一部分,清洗流路4A的内部(S7)。通过以上的工序,在固化性树脂2的层内形成图1的空腔14和液晶区域15,以得到图1的光学元件10。
如上所述可知,使用丙烯酸树脂作为固化性树脂2,使用P型液晶作为液晶4,来执行图3的各工序时,可得到图1的光学元件10。然而,认为树脂和液晶的组合中也存在无法形成大致圆形的流路4A的组合、或液晶无法在树脂内放射状扩散的组合。例如,由于固化性树脂2的粘度、或者固化性树脂2和液晶4的密度之差的不同,被注入的液晶4有时会浮出树脂层的表面。又,液晶4为由多个化合物构成的混合物的情况也较多,根据成分的不同,扩散系数不同。因此,固化性树脂2和液晶4需要根据粘度和密度的关系,选择能够将液晶4以管状注入固化性树脂2的内部,且液晶4扩散至固化性树脂2的内部并大致放射状地取向的组合。
又,由于在图3的S6的工序中,即使在使固化性树脂2固化后也会发生液晶4的渗入,因此,认为即使将液晶注入已经形成于树脂内的空腔中,也能够得到光学元件10。因此,也对光学元件10的其他的制造方法进行说明。
在该方法中,首先准备预先在内部形成了截面为大致圆形的空腔的树脂层。并且,将针插入该树脂内并将液晶注入空腔内后,拔出针。其后,进行与图3的S6及S7同样的工序。即,经过一定时间,使液晶渗入树脂内,其后,切除树脂层的一部分,并清洗注入液晶的空腔内部。以上的工序也能够得到光学元件10。
另外,也存在通过图3的制造方法无法形成圆形流路,但通过上述其他制造方法能够使用的树脂和液晶的组合。例如,若使用环氧树脂作为固化性树脂2的话,则采用图3的制造方法无法形成液晶的流路,但若将液晶注入已形成于固化的环氧树脂内的流路的话,则液晶在树脂内扩散,得到大致放射状的取向。因此,作为光学元件10的树脂层12的材料,例如也可以是环氧树脂等的其他紫外线固化树脂、尿素树脂、三聚氰胺树脂或者苯酚树脂等的热固化性树脂。
以下,对确认在液晶区域15内液晶分子呈大致放射状取向的实验进行说明。在该实验中,使用丙烯酸树脂作为图2的(A)~图2的(C)的固化性树脂2,使用作为默克制的P型液晶的MLC-7018及MDA-003461作为液晶4。并且,通过图3的制造方法,在丙烯酸树脂层的内部中将P型液晶分配为直线状。
在该实验使用的丙烯酸树脂的折射率为1.50,默克制的P型液晶MLC-7018的折射率的非寻常光折射率ne为1.55,寻常光折射率no为1.47。此时,由于非寻常光折射率ne比丙烯酸树脂的折射率大,因此与取向为大致放射状的液晶分子的ne方向平行的偏振光即径向偏振光得以传播。
同样地,使用默克制的P型液晶MDA-003461的情况下,液晶的非寻常光折射率ne为1.77,寻常光折射率no为1.54。其比丙烯酸树脂的折射率1.50大,因此,按照液晶的取向,非寻常光线的本征偏振光及寻常光线的本征偏振光都具有光限制效应,因此能够进行径向偏振光或者角向偏振光的传播。
图4是用于说明本实验形成的空腔14的形成位置及大小的示意图。在实验中,树脂层12的厚度为1000μm,在该树脂层12中,将针3插入至500μm的深度。并且,边使针3以20mm/秒的速度沿树脂层12的面方向呈直线状移动,边施加10kPa的分配压,分配P型液晶,从而能形成截面为直径200μm的大致圆形的空腔14。
并且,通过在拔出针3后,使树脂层12进行紫外线固化,而形成流路。准备两层这种树脂层12,一层在所形成的流路上设置开口部,另一层保持完全封闭内部的液晶的状态。其后放置数日,使液晶渗入树脂层12内。另外,在该实验中,与作为光学元件使用时相比,流路(空腔14)的直径变大。
图5的(A)~(D)是通过偏振光显微镜观察如上所述制成的光学元件10的与其长度方向平行的面时的照片。图5的(A)及图5的(B)为相对于偏振片角度45°,光学元件10的长度方向的角度为0°时的照片。图5的(C)及图5的(D)为相对于偏振片角度45°,光学元件10的长度方向的角度为45°时的照片。
图5的(A)示出在流路4A设置开口部(未图示)并使液晶渗入的树脂层12。在图5的(A)中,液晶渗入树脂层12内并挥发,流路4a空腔化。可知流路4A的外侧的液晶区域15内变亮,透射光。又,可知,液晶渗入至与流路4A的直径差不多相同的深度,在液晶区域15的外侧具有浓度梯度。
图5的(B)示出保持完全封闭液晶4的状态使液晶4渗入的树脂层12。在图5的(B)中,液晶4渗入树脂层12内,且也残留在流路4A。可知不仅在流路4A的外侧的液晶区域15,在流路4A内部也透射光。与图5的(A)同样地,可知,液晶渗入至与流路4A的直径差不多相同的深度,在液晶区域15的外侧具有浓度梯度。
图5的(C)是对于图5的(A)的树脂层12,将光学元件10的长度方向倾斜角度45°时的照片。在图5的(A)中光学元件10的长度方向的角度为0°时透射光的液晶区域15中,变得不透射光。
图5的(D)是对于图5的(B)的树脂层12,将光学元件10的长度方向倾斜角度45°时的照片。在流路4A的部分中,与光学元件10的长度方向的角度为0°时的图5的(B)同样地透射光,但在液晶区域15中变得不透射光。
这样,空腔化了的流路和在内部残留液晶4的流路中的任一个都是在与流路4A的边界附近的液晶区域15内当偏振片和光学元件10的长度方向所构成的角度为45°时透射光,当偏振片和光学元件10的长度方向所构成的角度为0°时,变得不透射光。由此可知,在液晶区域15内,液晶分子具有高取向性地进行渗入。
图6的(A)~图6的(D)以及图7的(A)~图7的(D)是通过偏振光显微镜观察如上所述制成的光学元件10的与其长度方向垂直的截面时的照片。图6的(A)~图6的(D)及图7的(A)~图7的(D)分别为使光学元件10旋转0°、45°、90°、135°、180°、225°、270°、315°时的照片。
树脂层12与图5的(A)相同,使用流路的内部空腔化了的树脂层。可知无论为哪个旋转角度时,在与空腔14的边界附近的液晶区域15内,仅在相对于水平线呈45°的直线方向和135°的直线方向不透射光而阴暗,其他部分透射光。由于根据光学元件10的旋转角的不同,透射的图案不变,因此可推测出在液晶区域15内,液晶分子呈大致放射状取向。
接下来,对进行了用于调查光学元件10的偏振光特性的波导模拟实验的结果进行说明。在该波导模拟实验中,采用FDTD法(时间有限差分法),分别对在具有与光学元件10同样的构成的图8的(A)及图8的(B)的矩形区域内传播的光的电场强度进行计算。
图8的(A)及(B)是用于对光学元件10的波导模拟实验的条件进行说明的图。分别如图8的(A)及图8的(B)所示,波导模拟实验的对象的矩形区域具有中心区域34、围绕中心区域34的圆环区域35、以及位于圆环区域35的外侧的外侧区域32。中心区域34、圆环区域35及外侧区域32分别对应于光学元件10的空腔14、液晶区域15及树脂层12。
在图8的(A)的圆环区域35中,假设与光学元件10同样地,液晶分子的长轴方向呈放射状取向,具有各向异性。图8的(A)的放射状的粗箭头表示液晶分子的取向方向。另一方面,作为比较例,假设图8的(B)的圆环区域35中液晶分子未取向,具有各向同性。另外,对于外侧区域32,假设在图8的(A)和图8的(B)中的任一情况下都具有各向同性。
中心区域34的折射率为与空腔(真空)对应的n=1.00或者与水对应的n=1.33,外侧区域32的折射率为与丙烯酸树脂对应的n=1.50。中心区域34和外侧区域32的折射率的设定与图8的(A)和图8的(B)相同。另一方面,对于图8的(A)的圆环区域35,粗箭头方向的非寻常光折射率为ne=1.55,与粗箭头方向垂直的方向的寻常光折射率为no=1.47。图8的(B)的圆环区域35的折射率为n=1.55。
又,入射光在图8的(A)和图8的(B)中的任一情况下,都采用偏振方向为箭头a方向的单波长的平面波(TE波)。
图9的(A)~图9的(D)是示出中心区域34为空腔的情况下的波导模拟实验的结果的图。图9的(A)及图9的(B)是图8的(A)所示的条件下的结果,图9的(C)及图9的(D)是图8的(B)所示的条件下的结果。各图中,电场强度越高的点以越深的颜色来表示,电场强度越低的点以越浅的颜色来表示。又,在图9的(A)和图9的(C)中,与圆环区域35对应的部分用虚线表示。
如图9的(A)及图9的(B)所示,具有取向性的情况下,圆环区域35的右侧部分和左侧部分的电场强度最高。即,可知,光被限制在折射率高的圆环区域35中,特别是在液晶分子的取向方向与入射光的偏振方向(图8的(A)的箭头a方向)平行的圆环区域35的右侧部分和左侧部分,光进行波导。另一方面,如图9的(C)及图9的(D)所示,不具有取向性的情况下,在圆环区域35电场强度均匀变高。即可知,光在折射率高的圆环区域35的整周进行波导。
因此,可以说,若液晶分子具有取向性时,采用本实施例的液晶材料的话,仅与该取向方向平行的方向的偏振光具有光限制效应而被导波,因此在具有液晶分子呈大致放射状取向的液晶区域15的光学元件10中,能够保持径向偏振光的偏振光特性,使光进行波导。也就是说,液晶的非寻常光折射率ne为1.55,寻常光折射率no为1.47,图8的(A)的外侧区域32的折射率为n=1.50,因此仅液晶的非寻常光折射率ne比树脂的折射率大。因此,仅非寻常光线的本征偏振光具有光限制效应,因此该情况下仅径向偏振光受到光限制效应。
图10的(A)~图10的(D)是示出中心区域34填充有水的情况下的波导模拟实验的结果的图。与图9的(A)及图9的(B)同样,图10的(A)以及图10的(B)为图8的(A)所示的条件下的结果,图10的(C)及图10的(D)是图8的(B)所示的条件下的结果。各图中,电场强度越高的点以越深的颜色来表示,电场强度越低的点以越浅的颜色来表示。又,在图10的(A)和图10的(C)中,与圆环区域35对应的部分用虚线表示。
在图10的(A)~图10的(D)中,整体的深浅差比图9的(A)~图9的(D)小,关于圆环区域35的作为光波导区域的功能,可以说中心区域34为空腔的情况下更好。然而,中心区域34为水(n=1.33)的情况下,各区域的折射率的大小关系与中心区域34为空腔(n=1.00)的情况同样,因此折射率高的圆环区域35中光被限制,可以观察到与图9的(A)~图9的(D)同样的趋势。即,具有取向性的情况下的图10的(A)及图10的(B)中,在圆环区域35的右侧部分和左侧部分,光进行波导,不具有取向性的情况下的图10的(C)及图10的(D)中,光在圆环区域35的整周进行波导。因此,水流过光学元件10的空腔14的内部的情况下,也可得到与空腔14的内部为真空的情况同样的偏振光波导的效果。
如以上说明的那样,在光学元件10中具有液晶分子沿着作为管状的空间的空腔14的大致圆形的截面的径向呈大致放射状取向的结构。由此,光学元件10能够使沿液晶分子的取向偏振的径向偏振光保持其偏振光方向地传播。又,光学元件10通过采用非寻常光折射率及寻常光折射率双方都比周围的包层部分的折射率大的液晶材料,能够使在与径向上呈大致放射状取向的液晶分子呈90°的角度的周向上偏振的角向偏振光也保持偏振方向地传播。
最后,对光学元件10的应用例进行说明。光学元件10的应用例例如有利用表面等离子体共振(Surface Plasmon Resonance)现象的折射率传感器(SPR传感器)。表面等离子体共振是光以全反射角度以上的角度入射至与介质接触的金属薄膜的内表面时,与和金属薄膜接触的介质的折射率相应的波长及角度的光被吸收的现象。
图11的(A)及(B)是用于对应用了光学元件10的SPR传感器进行说明的图。图11的(A)是示出现有的波导型SPR传感器20的实例。SPR传感器20具有在上表面设置有金属薄膜21的光波导管22。测定时,在金属薄膜21之上放置有测定对象的样品S,从光波导管22的入射面23入射光。光在光波导管22内反复全反射并传播,根据样品S的折射率而衰减。因此,通过检测出从出射面24出射的光,观察出射光相对于透射光量或者入射光的光谱变化,由此能够测定样品S的折射率变化。
图11的(B)示出应用了图1的光学元件10的波导型SPR传感器。光学元件10用金属薄膜17覆盖空腔14的内壁,试样S流过空腔14,使光在该周边的液晶区域15传播,由此能够作为SPR传感器使用。若用金属薄膜17覆盖空腔14的话,能够将空腔14和液晶区域15的边界面整体作为传感器使用,因此相比于上述SPR传感器20,传感器的表面积变大。这样,使用了光学元件10的SPR传感器能够与该面积比成比例地测定更微细的折射率的变化。特别是利用液晶区域15的液晶分子的取向性,对向作为传感器部分的金属薄膜17的入射光的偏振光进行控制,由此能够提高SPR传感器的灵敏度。

Claims (3)
1.一种光学元件,其特征在于,具有:
树脂层;以及
光波导区域,其形成于所述树脂层内,光在所述树脂层的长度方向上被导波,
在所述光波导区域中,液晶分子在与所述长度方向垂直的截面呈大致放射状地取向,
所述光波导区域的折射率比所述树脂层的折射率大。
2.如权利要求1所述的光学元件,其特征在于,
还具有形成于所述树脂层内的、具有大致圆形的截面的管状的空间,
所述光波导区域以与所述管状的空间接触的形态形成,
在所述光波导区域中,液晶分子沿所述大致圆形的截面的径向呈大致放射状地取向。
3.如权利要求1或2所述的光学元件,其特征在于,
所述树脂层为丙烯酸树脂层,所述液晶为P型液晶。
